North end. Hauser or holter.

Forget the north end of Canyon Ferry unless you are very familiar with it.  The ice is very unpredictable and the fishing even more so.

Plenty of trouting options on the south end away from the main crowd.

They're doing well south of silos for trout.

FWP, who issues the permit to hold the fishing derby, requires the permittee to submit fishing results usually within a month after the derby. With a little coaxing, they will send you a copy when they get it.

Ya they road out with us. They got really soaked in the 3mile ride out there in the back of the trailer. It was a great day on the ice.

I did hear something about a team trying to weigh a fish from saturday at sundays derby and its a damn shame there are SCUMBAGS out there that feel the need to CHEAT.  If you cant compete fair, STAY HOME!!!!!!

so let me get this straight they mooched a ride AND tried to cheat?
Title: Re: perch derby, canyon ferry
Post by: Born Late on Jan 27, 2015, 03:33 PM
I think he meant the IR reporter/photographer caught a ride, not the cheaters.

Indeed. What born late said. Sorry about the confusion. When they were cuaght for the clipped fish. When they were coming out the front door they dispersed rather quickly across the parking lot.

Yeesh.  I just saw in today's Helena IR article that the biggest perch (1.23 lb) in the individual event last weekend darned near surpassed the biggest walleye (1.33 lb).

That's a dandy!

The perch size doesn't surprise me as much as what seems like further confirmation that no one has yet figured out how to regularly pull larger walleyes from CF during the winter. I know I sure haven't.

Heh heh.  Maybe saw a path just wide enough and long enough to drop the boat in and troll?   ;D

"Regularly" was the operative word in my comment; I don't doubt that some are being caught.  I do doubt that walleye anglers suddenly become modest and don't take big fish photos in the winter.  ;)

Is the article correct that the top perch on Saturday paid $1035 while the top walleye was only worth a hundred bucks?   ???
