First ice
« on: Dec 03, 2023, 05:24 AM »
I use to have a couple small swamp ponds that I’d fish first ice when I lived in central vt. Now I’m in northeastern vt and there’s great fishing on bigger bodies of water. Lacking the small tucked away ponds for first ice fishing. Anyone been on the ice anywhere yet? There’s one pond in central vt my buddy has reported to me has ice but it’s a 2 hr trip for me.

Not sure but try posting on the Vermont board, not sure if you'd meant to post there instead of general.

Thickest ive found was Bakers.  Had 2" of white ice on the last  day of rifle season.    I'm sure the warm moist weather didn't do it any good though.

I saw one insane person on North Montpelier Pond on December 2.  Looked like a few inches of slush out there with open water on either side.

Lol yeah even when the ice is thick I stay off north Montpelier. There’s a small swamp/beaver pond maybe 15 min from there that has jumbo perch that is in a cold pocket on a mountain that always is first to freeze. I live an hr and a half away from there now. So I don’t fish it much. I live 5 min from carmi so that’s my go to for pike walleye and jumbo perch. Almost time to hit the ice

They are technically biting.  5 fow  3.5-4 inches that changed to worse quite quickly. Caught by my pops,  6 hours before this rain storm rolled in yesterday.  Life jackets were worn.

Went up to Carmi today for an ice check; 2” at both launches. Too bad this warm weather is coming in.

Idk how far away you are but I live close. I can let you know as it becomes fishable. I’d guess this coming week the south end will become fishable

It's supposed to be pretty cold all week, it's 16 degrees this morning. I'd guess by next weekend there will be fishable ice on some of the ponds.

Clear with no wind last night and single digits this morning. There has to be fishable ice here in central Vt.

Def fishable ice in central vt on smaller ponds. Here up north at carmi. Thursday evening there was a lot of open water with heavy north wind pushing water out the cracks around the shore. Was about 2” of ice. No wind and couple cold nights and days should have tightened it up a little. Really need a good week to fully lock it up

I imagine after Wednesday there will be 0% of safe ice. 60 mph wind, 50' and rain... Not good.

The way it's looking we'll be lucky to get 6 weeks of fishing.  Maybe this wasn't the best year to invest in a Snow Dog  :-\

With any luck,  the fresh layer of snow will provide a cushion from the next storm, which, HOPEFULLY won't be as  bad as forecasted.     Somebody has to be hopeful, right?

Suggesting how someone else may feel to call out posts you personally didnt like may be insulting to some....

When I was a kid fishermen had thick skin and always busted stones..someone needs to bring back those days.  Snowflakery has taken over...

Well I couldn’t resist and went up to Carmi this afternoon. Still only 2” at the launch with slush on top. Open water out towards the middle. I spent some time jigging 20’ from shore with no luck. Saw a couple guys out on the south end, looked like they had better ice.

Sound advice, you should take it instead of suggesting someone is insulted on their behalf....
