I am building a new 4X8 and would love to post pictures of it here. Maybe someone can get some ideas for theirs from me. But I can;t seem to figure out how to post the pictures here. How do I do that? The sled is made of 2X4's. the floor is 3/8 inch plywood. The side walls are 2X2's and 3/8 inch plywood. I am using fence poles to hole it open with widget tie down straps to pull it tight so the poles will not slip out and I am covering it with vinyl coated polyester that I bought at a tent and awning shop for $50.00 <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee183/walterk4/007.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

I bought some belt like strips material from TSC in the horse supply area that I am going to fasten to the end walls about 6 inches up fraom the floor and to the floor about 6 inches out from the wall for added support.

(http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee183/walterk4/024.jpg) When I cover it I am going to brush on a bead of 12 hour epoxy to one edge at a time and staple the material to it and then nail on a 1/2inch X 3inch flashing strips over that.

Though I grew up in southeast Michigan I live just south of Nashville Tennessee and The neighbors wondering about me. I do go to Michigan a couple of times a winter. My friend has a small portable that I have been in fishing a few times with him on either Sand lake or devils lake out near Michigan international speedway. But this year we hope to have just a bit more room and hopefully the wind won't blow us around so much.

I was just up north fishing on Sand lake over the weekend drifting around in my boat dreaming of putting it out on the ice this winter so I guess i better get busy. I did catch a 17 inch nothern using a full live crawler on a #1 worm hook on a Carolina rig. I hope my pictures will help anyone looking to build their first 4x8. This is my first one.

I wouldn't worry about foaming the bottom. I have a 4x8 with a 3/8 floor too. I have been out in -20 and fell asleep laying on the floor. As long as you have a source of heat, you should be good. The foam floor would add weight and reduce clearance plus it would not be too durable. Just my thoughts..

That is what I was thinking. I might hold in the warmth. But as I would be pulling weather it be with my arms and legs or a snowmobile as soon as I hit some hard deep snow it would break right off. I was thinking I might wax the runners on the sled like you would a toboggan to help it slide easier. but if I do that I will have to wait for cooler weather. I waxed my toboggan last year to use up north and aver this summer the wax softened and fell right off the toboggan as it hung on the wall in the garage.

I just read another post where the guy used aluminum flashing. I have the same type runners as you do and was thinking this might work good. Wood on ice slides fine but wood on snow is a pain. This will be my second year with this shack. Last year it didn't move when snow was on the ice. Luckily that only occured once when I went out.

Well my wife's sister and bother-n-law live just down the road from one of the lakes that we fish on and they have both a 4 wheeler and a snow mobile so if there is a lot of snow I hope the will either let me use one or come down to the lake and pull it out for me. I also plan to carry a snow shovel out with us to clear any snow out of the way

I pulled it out by hand. As long as there is no snow on the ice, it moves just fine. You shouldn't have a problem. I have a 4x8 with all hardsides and a plywood roof, so it is probably a lot heavier than yours. A little snow will make things a lot harder. Also, if you plan on being on the ice for more than a few hours it is a good idea to bring a 4 wood blocks to set under your runners when you get set up. It will make things a lot easier to pull the shack off as you won't stick to the ice.

I'd cut off those hinge bolts. I wouldn't want to tear a boot on them!

Just a thought,but I would not use the epoxy when attatching the fabric to the frame. The flashing will seal it up just fine and if you ever need to remove the cover to repair or replace it it will me MUCH easier and not as messy.

I did cut off the hinge bolts just after the picture was taken. I really was not thinking of how easy the canvas would be to take off rather the epoxy was to help keep the staples from pulling it.(http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee183/walterk4/040.jpg)

I am here by myself doing this and that is as good as I could get the first side. I thought about pulling the flashing and staples out of the side and re tighting it but the then though not. I figure this is my first shanty and I would be ok for this year. It will stay like that until the wind ripps it up then I will redo it.

I am orginally from southeast Michigan but moved to TEnnessee to work at the Saturn plant. I go home a few times in the winter to go Ice fishing. I will leave the shanty either on a lake close to my inlaws and best friends house for them to use when I am at home or on a trailer at my inlaws farm so who ever wants to take it out can. I am calling it my first 2 man sort of portable shanty.

Thats not a shack, it is a piece of artwork, beautiful work man. I think anyone would say you should puff out your chest and strut like a rooster around that shanty (shanty isn't the right word).

But I had to go buy another1x2 8 feet long, cut it and I am putting on the finish today. I put one coat on last night and another this morning and will do another tonight after the hockey game.

I have cut two of these from the left over plywood from the end walls. I was thinking of using them on the top of the end walls as flashing. But now when I look at the shanty I think they look kind of ratty. I am wondering what someone else would do. Should I take the time and go buy a couple more 8 foot long 1x2's cut them to fit and finish them or should I use the two that are ready to be put on?

Using some extra canvas sewing together some pouches and putting some Velcro on them. They will make some good storage. My summer fishing vest won't fit over my winter clothes.

You better plan on buying her a new sewing machine then you use hers she may not take to kindly on you using her "baby" on some canvas! but that is some nice looking Fishing shelter cant call it a shack for sure!

WE don't get Ice in Franklin Tennessee. I am orginally from southeast Michigan and go home a few times in the winter months just to go Ice fishing with a life long friend of mine. I plan to take the shanty to Michigan as soon as there is thick enough to support it and let my friend use it when I am not there. I hope to make it up to Michigan at least every other weekend this winter to use the shanty myself.

Looks great.As long as the sun is shining you wont need a heater. Get ahold of some "nail pouch"
aprons the carpenters use,they make good holders and you can just staple them to the wall.

Nice job on the shack. Just and idea for the runners, if you can hook up with someone that can get you some Lexon,(looks like plexy glass only alot stronger) it makes great runners. I got mine cut in 3.5" strips, and then had a guy with a sheet metal brake bend them so that it would just fit over the edge of the 2x4. You have to notch the ends so you can fit it around the curves on the ski's, and then use small screws to hold it all on. The first time I used it, I had to walk down a slope to get on the lake, and the darn shack just about ran over me lol, so then I put a rope on the back and let it go down first. This Lexon stuff will bend just like steel will without breaking. Just a thought. Good Luck in the upcoming ice season

No I am orginally from southeast Michigan. I go home to MIchigan a few times in the winter just to go Ice Fishing. Usually on sand lake or Devils lake out near Irish Hills Michigan

Nice Shanty! and as for the wood runners you can buy nylon strips a 1/4" X however wide thy are and screw them on, this is what thy use on dog sleds and works very well. good luck.

That looks great. I'm in the prosess of building a new shanty with the tub from an old pop up camper. Just one question is the roof gonna be able to hold snow without sagging to much?

what I had to do was put some scrap wood right under the seam in the middle on top of the fence polls inside to hold it up. I have left it open durring the rain and it did sag and fill up with water before I put the wood under the center. I am hoping to use it more as a portable.but if snow does build up, it should only sag about an inch and a half. but as of right now I do not plan to leave it out on the ice over any length of time, unless there is no smow storms in the foracast. I am thinking of making something out of pvc pipe to set on top of the fence polls and bubgie cord down. holding the roof up so it will not sag. I know I should have have made the top a radious but I thought by making it the way I did the flashing would be easier to make. as you can see I have flashing on to top and the sides. for a round top I wouwld have had to cut another round piece of plywood for the top inside of each end and used a thinner flashing so it would bend around the curve easier. and I was afraid that nailing into the side end of the plywood might split it. so this would make it more strudy.

I have a 4' x 8' fold-down shanty somewhat similar to yours, but have eliminated the sag completely. After setting up my shanty I attach a flexible rod (rebar, 3/8" diameter I believe) diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, firmly supporting the entire 'roof' (tarp). The ends of the rod are mounted in 1/2" (counter-sunk) holes drilled near the ends of each wooden brace-pole. Not only does this eliminate snow and water 'pooling', it really makes the entire shanty much more 'solid' and less susceptible to wind 'flapping'. You might be able to fashion a similar concept.

Using fence polls to hold the ends apart it is really solid. I have only closed it up once since I finished covering it with the canvas. there was some strong winds of Up to 80 miles an hour coming our way one after noon so I decided to close it down for that but I have had it open the rest of the time. we have had some wind gust of up to 50 miles and hour and it is holding up just fine. I am thinking of some ways to hold the sag out of the center of the roof. your idea has made me think of taking some of the smallest size of pvc pipe I can find. Drilling a hole in the inside 2x2 on the top of each end wall about a half inch deep. then cut the pvc pipe so it is just a bit longer then the distance across the shanty. then when the pvc pipe slips into the holes is had a slight bow to it holding the canvas up higher in the center so the water and snow run off of it. Like I was saying I have had it set up for a while now. the top did sag and fill with water when it rained. it also leaked where the canvas was sewn together at the seam. what I did for now was to set a short piece of 2x4 across the fence polls top hold up the roof at the center. that seemed to fix the problem. it does not sag or leak anymore.

NO not really. last year they had some plans for a portable that you could down load here in iceshanty.com. I just took the plans and did some adding to them. I guess the hardest part would be laying out the 2x4's for the sled and base would be the trickyest part. You have to use a lot of math to keep everything centered. as you can see some of the cross supports for the floor also get used as a lip to hold up the trap doors in the floor. it is really not hard to make if you sit down and think about it.

Mostly you can build one from the pictures from this thread and others, but if you really need a plan, that one is pretty good.

Me and my father built something similar to yours years ago, just got to the point it was too heavy for him to move alone but ours was a pull up. As for being a portable how well/neatly does it fold down. can you post a pic? do you have an idea for the weight? might be an idea I could use to kill some time when we get laid off later this year at the plant.

It folds down and opens back up just great as long as you fold the back wall dwon first leaving the front door open to let the air that is inside out. then when you open it open the door first so it will suck the air back in as you open it.
