I have never fished for crappie in the winter but will be this weekend. During soft water I just use tube jigs. What do you recommend for them this time of year? I am anticipating most will say minnows. Not sure where I can get any here in Lafayette. If anyone know let me know.

Have you tried Abbott's outdoors ?

I've been using ice tear drop jigs and various small ice jigs tipped with either bee moth or spikes

What are spikes?

I been using a #14 purple jig w/ blue/pink fleck tipped with one red spike(maggot). Been getting 7-10 slab crappies per outing the last 2 weeks and 30-40 nice gill/red ears mixed in...not to mention a few largemouth aswell, but I don't keep them!

10 point,we all started out as rookies at one time, spikes are maggots.I basically fish for Gills, small jigs,Gill pill,Ratso's,ratfinkees and two many to mention and small spoons,Frosty, forage minnow, slender spoon to name a few. Crappies hit all gill lures. The lake I fish the bulls(big gills in the 9 inch range) are mixed with crappie. The only thing I can tell you is that crappie are almost always higher in the water column.Using my VEX yesterday in 15 fow,the crappie hit around 10fow and the bulls where lower but not always. Some lakes do better on small minnows but the lake I fish they show very little interest in them. Hope this helps you a little.

I keep it easy and simple normaly i just use a plain short shank GOLD hook with a minnow split shot about a foot up under a slip bobber you can dead stick them (Just leave it sit) or jig it slowly up and down with a 10-15 sec pause between. been working for me for years Hope this helps GOOD LUCK!!

I've fished a small lake near home for about 8 years that I know has crappies in it. (I catch them in the spring) But for whatever reason I cannot catch one on the ice to save my life. I've tried shallow, deep and everywhere in between but can't seem to find them. This lake is only about 35 acres so you'd think I catch one by accident at sometime or another.
The deepest area of this lake is about 30 feet. I am going to try there this weekend.
It's owned by the township and one of the rules is that you have to be off the lake at sunset, or I would try at night.
