Good ice up north this weekend?
« on: Apr 04, 2014, 09:54 PM »
Oneida Lake is pretty much done for the season after today's wind and rain.  Thinking of heading north - Watertown area or thereabouts... any decent ice left up that way?

Plenty of good ice in the Central Adirondacks.  Was on Indian Lake yesterday, 28-32 inches of ice in the 10 holes I drilled, and  the shorelines are good.

Will be staying on Indian Lake this summer.  Was looking for something within an hour's drive of Syracuse.  Watertown, etc...

What about the Salmon River reservoir up near Redfield?

I doubt that would be any better than Oneida. With all the rain they got there and the snow that was on top of it, it can't be safe... Reservoirs are usually the first water bodies to lose safe ice. I was on Delta last Saturday and it was getting unsafe fast. All that melt water raises hell with the shore lines and the 8 inch hole you drill becomes a 16 inch one really fast.

Makes sense... was looking at a map for large lakes in the area.

I have surveyed the ice on the St. Lawrence this week from Kring Point at Goose Bay upstream to Cape Vincent. Best to stay off it now.I saw nothing that could be described as safe ice.

Brother, stay clear of all the lakes and water up and around the Watertown area.  Its not safe at all.  I live up here and ice fish religiously.  With the 68 degree day yesterday with wind and rain pretty much ended the ice fishing season.
