homemade ski sled help
« on: Dec 23, 2014, 05:23 PM »
i've been reading a lot of dimensions of sleds made on skis. can you give me your dimensions
of your sleds if you can. like center to center of skis . height of brackets 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 and center
to center of front cross piece and back cross piece. I have 5 1/2 foot skis . any help at all
would be great. thanks

I run mine at least 3' between the skis.  I have one that is 12" off the ground and spacing from front to back depends on the size shack, for my little clam suitcase it was probably about 3'.  For my big suitcase it was closer to 4' for the front to back, and probably about 40" between the skis.  I believe I have built all of mine off set just a bit with the weight more to the back of the skis then centered over the skis (just a bit, like maybe 6")  Just make sure its wide enough o not tip over, and if you can make it so you can take it apart.  My big smitty took up a lot of box space of my truck.

You will want to make your sled whatever dimentions you will need for your Plastic sled to fit on. Or Flip over. What ever size you need. Not all are the same.

google smitty sled but take a set of skis I use down hill screw 2x6s to the top of skis by counter sinking from bottem of skis , then messure the bottem of your sled, build a platform to support your shanty, then ratchet strap your sled to the platform during transport

While Smitty sleds are great they still struggle in deep snow.  If I were building mine again (which I might) I would place the skis the same distance apart as snowmobile skis.  I find that following the snow machine tracks is the only way I can get out after a heavy snow here in upstate NY.

a sled to haul my clam flip over

Should update your Profile with your location

Risers 2 x 6 ....cross braces 2 x 3( to cut down in weight) .. ..make it the width of your shelter w/a little extra ..I like ratchet straps connected via eye bolts/screws ....remember to keep the weight toward the rear(make your last riser a bout a foot from the back edge of the ski) ...makes for easier dragging ...also a 14 to 16 foot rope is a must

Here is a thread with my smitty sled I just made.  I made it about 8 inches off the ground and just added about 3 inches to the width of my jet sled.

I set my jet sled with skis to keep it from getting damaged when dragging over gravel jagged ice etc.I know it's not really a smithy sled but if you keep your smithy sled low and the bottom smooth and slightly rounded in the front it will make dragging sled much easier.Had a smithy sled that was about a ft off the ground and was a bear to drag thru deep snow that's why went back to jet sled with skis.

Nice Rg. Judging by the materials and bending skills, I presume you were in the electrical business.
