Never used anything but a knot.
I’m assuming you have to “install” this button on the line while setting up before the season before tying leaders on etc?
Or, is it something you can add to the line anytime?
Sorry for the ignorance but would like to try buttons and want to know when and how to put them in place...😳

I've used buttons for many years and they work great...simply detach your leader and snake your squid line up thru one hole of the button and down an opposite hole so that it slides easily up and down the line....re-attach your leader and your ready to go....TR

I use a swivel at the und of my braid. I just put the button on like TR said and then tie on the swivel.

I use the sinkers with a slit down them and the rubber inside. lay the line on the sinker and twist it around. I like them because you can slide them up and down the line with no problem. Having been using them for about fifth years now.  Geo.

The button goes on before you add your swivel/leader...you need to thread the braid ice line through the eyelets of the button
I’ve seen lots of guys use knots, but have never tried it myself...can you get the knot out or is it there permanently?.
I just want to go ice fishing and ignore my adult problems

Use 2 buttons. keep one at 80 feet and the other at 40. problem solved.

I wouldn't recommend this - as the 80ft button could end up snagging line when a fish at the 40 ft depth runs...

I used to use knots - but switched to buttons and prefer it. If you use knots... take the time to untie them between trips, or eventually you have too many of them and they can cause spooling issues as well..

If the knot is tied properly it comes untied with one pull off a loop. I was taught the knot years ago but couldn't explain it through words. Actually hit or miss when I do it depending on how cold my fingers are & how many beers I've had. But in theory there should not be multiple knots.

I cut twist ties to about an inch long. Set the depth and twist it around my line. They are nice and flush with the line.
You can also slide it to adjust it up or down for different depths.

I have used buttons. I had some issues snagging.
Mostly if I left it on the spool, when fishing just below the ice.
I decided I didn't need em.
