Title: Brushy Creek get together
Post by: toofuss on Dec 30, 2013, 09:24 PM
Ok guys so I know this was brought up earlier and interest seemed good. So I am going to start this off and get an official thread going. As of right now its looking like the weekend starting Saturday march 1st, Looks really good. We are wanting to do something kinda big so if any of you guys have any Ideas speak up. I for one would not mind moving it up a couple weeks either but would really like to wait for good driveable ice for hauling everything out.

So who is in?

Edit: DATE CHANGE

Check the tournaments and derby's board
Title: Re: Brushy Creek get together
Post by: Bruiser on Dec 31, 2013, 12:36 PM
I did check that board, but it didn't show a time. Figured someone would be able to answer quickly if they knew. No worries.

Great Ideas guys keep them coming. I am not limiting this to just a shanty get together either. If you have friends that are not on the boards bring em' with.

And jkujawa awesome idea on the bags tourney. I also like the small fish contest

Im planning on bringing my grill also. I was thinking pot luck would be cool if yall want. I think this is just going to have to be the date we roll with as anything before or after gets a little difficult with tourneys and whatnot. Anyone has any better ideas for a date let me know.

I am planning on being up there Saturday morning the 15th of February. I know some will arrive at diff times and there are even some rumors of over nighting.I probably wont be able to stay over night due to family commitments. What I am planning on is having my shanty militia flag flying from the truck and just driving out off the north end. If drive out isnt possible we will just meet up at the north ramp and go from there.

BigRock, I was kinda thinking some of us guys could get together somewhere that morning and make the drive up together. Maybe that way if someone needs some extra room for people of equipment we might be able to make it work.

As I have never been to Brushy, could you give me some idea where everyone is fishing ? I won't be able to get there until the middle of the afternoon.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I'll see if my BIL wants to go and maybe one other guy. Not sure where everyone lives and how they drive up to Brushy but we usually take 141 to 17 to Highway 20 which might influence where we meet.
Title: Re: Brushy Creek get together
Post by: toofuss on Jan 13, 2014, 12:50 PM
I am on the south east side and generally run the 5/65 up to 80 then 35 north to 20. The 141 route is just as easy though. Sending you a pm with my cell # call or text as I am off work for the next couple days with a sick kid.

My girlfriend said she'd come with. It'll be her first trip ever, severe cold hater. I just fried some gill fillets though. I think that helped. Nothing like fresh fish through the ice.

Ok everyone the way the plan sits as of know myself and a couple others are gonna be meeting up here in des moines early friday morning. Then making the drive up. If a bunch of you guys wanna meet up at the north ramp at a certain time just speak up and say so. I for one would kinda like to be fishing sometime close to daylight but if enough say otherwise I need to hear it. Over the next week or so please pm me and let me know your coming and an approximate number in your group. I would like to keep track of who is there. I am also going to make up a tag with my screen name for my hut and would be more than happy to make you guys one as well.

It is a 2 hour drive for me from Shell Rock but I'm up for it.  I'll be in MO this weekend chasing Pheasants and Chukar.

I've got room in my pickup for any one local to the Shell Rock area (non-smoker) who would like to share my fuel expense.   I have an extended cab F150 with a closed topper for gear.  I should be able to put another single man flip over in back along with mine.

I'll check back in Monday for any messages and any further details as to exact time and place and such.

Dave I believe the plan now is there will be some of us meeting in des Moines and then most of the group meeting at the north ramp around daylight. I know some won't make it till later but that's not a big deal as I will be flying the militia flag on my truck so everyone can find me. I will also update our main location here on the forum along with posting my cell # the day of. If you guys need to get ahold of me for any reason feel free to pm me.
Title: Re: Brushy Creek get together
Post by: toofuss on Feb 24, 2014, 04:46 PM
As of right now I have room for one guy to ride with and help share in the fuel bill. Other wise we may consolidate some gear and run three guys in one truck. If anyone wants to go get in touch with me
Title: Re: Brushy Creek get together
Post by: toofuss on Feb 25, 2014, 09:23 PM
OK guys its getting down to crunch time. I hate to sound needy but I was wondering how may of you guys are bringing quads and how may are planning to drive out. I myself am planning on driving out if possible but I would like to have a plan in place if that is not possible. I would hate to have the whole group contained in one are cause noone wants to walk a long ways. I would even be willing to help someone with the gas to operate their quad if needed.
Title: Re: Brushy Creek get together
Post by: Huntindave on Feb 26, 2014, 09:43 AM
I don't own a quad so I'll be driving out.  I'm hoping a four wheel drive pickup can make it around on the ice.

only 5 set up on north end thursday night. i didn't fish. so no report there. the lake looked pretty good for driving on the paths. i went about 3/4 mile south of north ramp. went to handicap jetty on west side and didn't see anyone to the north south or east. but we caught fish last week and went 3 diff. times. fished 30' of water. fish were on bottom and up. if something comes in at 10' up reel up to it as these were crappie and they were bittin. i have to work all weekend so i can't make it either. i'll try to fish this evening and report back then. oh ya the bite is better at dawn and dusk. i'm sure that is why metalworkz is going early. grizz

not much to report. my finder wouldn't work so i fished blind about an hour off bridge no. 1. wind blew most of the night here so i'm sure there are some drifts on the lake because there is in my driveway. good luck to all and our best luck was to keep moving till we found active fish 25' to 30' of water most caught on waxies for me anyhow. grizz

So I know some of the guys are still out there but I will give a summary report.

I believe we had a good turn out although I think it would have been better if the weather wasn't So rough.
There were some good fish caught and one really good one as seen in the pic on the previous page. Congrats to catmandude on an extremely nice fish. Even though I think I was a little generous of the weight estimate lol.
Jamie thanks for letting me try that rod I am definitely going to give those guys a call. Pm me and I will get you my address as I forgot on the way out.
It was great to get to meet you guys and I am already planning next year.
Thanks to all who showed up and you guys are the reason I want to do it all again. I will be posting pics later on and invite all you who took them to post up. If you need to pm me and I will post them for you.

What an awesome day out on the ice! I came home and wrapped the eye up in a soaking wet towel like you guys recommended and then gently stuck him in the Freezer. Anybody have a good taxidermist they would personally recommend? Can't wait to get together and do this next year!

Rough weather,,,, That's putting it mildly.  Nobody was outside their shelter any longer than they had to be.

I'd shave about three pounds off that walleye and  call it  closer to 6lbs rather than 9lbs.  Still a very nice walleye and nice job getting it up to the ice using 2lb. line.

Congrats on the fatty! Great looking walleye, the colors on those remind me a lot of Oahe walleyes, very grey looking. I'm pretty bummed I couldn't make it up, all my fishing stuff is in Northern Minnesota in my camper which had to get left behind due to my buddy's truck not starting. Then to top that off I had my gf's grandfather's funeral on Saturday which was so cold and icy that we had to push the hearse up the hill, talk about one last ride... Glad everyone had a good time!

There are a lot of ways to fish brushy.. right now, I would be in the channel.  However there is endless structure in the lake that will hold fish.

ron thoma and gary fox have started a guiding business on brushy called hard water excursions. They are on heartland icemen on facebook advertising. I myself get hammered a lot about where, what , how...and after spending $10,000 on gas and 40 million hrs fishing the lake, I'm being tight lipped anymore. There are internet dudes that stare at the shoreline pics and want to know where Travis caught that nice eye, and it took him and I hrs and hrs to learn that lake, and we are still learning. Between my friends and the pm's I get here constantly, I just tell guys I caught them in the lip at Ada Hayden lol.

Great that's just what we need is a bunch of guys out there following the guide service around. More power to them I guess it was just an matter of time.

Clear lake has Kevan Paul. All good fisheries have guides, no big deal. I'm sure that Ron and Gary have lots and lots of gasand hrs fishing that lake, and let's face it...90% of people fish it and get skunked. Time is $, and if a guy is making a 3 hr drive from some where, only has a day to fish it, why not hire a guide .

I just don't want to see it turn into some kinda resort lake you know? I dunno

A 5 mph lake in the middle of no where is never going to be a resort lake. No tubing and baja boats lol

Last year, I mentioned the 'hot bite' on a small lake here in Dallas County and the next Saturday I counted 20 shacks on the ice. I thought it was an ice fishing tournament. :o

I understand not wanting to drive 3 hours and get skunked but put some time in....research lake maps and read up on fish information for whatever species your looking for.

Me...I've been looking for my first keeper walleye at Big Creek....some days I think I'll have better luck finding Big Foot.  ;D

EDITED: After reading the posts below by mjlenz and nwifisherman, I think they said it better than how I was trying to say it. Good job out of both of them.

I've asked Kevin Paul for advice on where the perch bite was happening on Spirit lake before via email and he helped my wife and I out, next day we tore them up once we figured out what jig and presentation to use.  Not sure why everyone has to keep a secret about everything or place.  Saturday I had 5 huts within 20 feet all around me and they weren't catching anything but dink blue gill and I was pounding the big ones once I found the right jig and bait.  They all packed up and left and I was still pounding them.  So I guess I've never had a problem with fishing around anyone or vise a versa.  I ventured to a different spot than what Kevin pointed me to and did great so I told him where my wife and I fished at that day.  I figure if I can help someone catch a fish then so be it!  That's what life is all about......helping others and hope they return the favor.  :)  JMO

I agree with Mjlenz.  If someone is kind enough to help me out at a place I am unfamiliar with I always will try and return the favor by telling them how I did and what worked that day.  I am fine with fishing in a small group of people when there is a hot bite and actually enjoy it more because I can talk to more people and maybe learn something new.  Although I do like to help people succeed and have fun fishing I will not post specifics on an open forum for the whole world to see.  One thing that can ruin a day fishing is a bunch of yahoos showing up to your spot having no idea what they are doing and just being obnoxious.

This is the first year for me organizing it but it wont be the last. As far as everything else i dunno what to think. I understand the traveling and wanting to be able to catch fish. And i also know how intimidating that lake is. I guess it comes down to share and share alike. I want to help people but in the same thought i dont want to do the work for them. Im also nt the kind of guy to go hammer a spot someone else showed me especially if that person is already there.

Not sure if this should be put into a new thread but....

Do we want to keep the get together at Brushy Creek or move it around so some guys don't have to travel as far every year? Just throwing it out there.

I have been thinking the same thing but I do want to try and keep it somewhat centrally located east west wise for so nobody has to drive clear across the state. Its tough to be fair to everybody plus the number of lakes worth travelling for is kinda small. I am open to sugestions though.

I am thinking about moving it up a little bit next year to avoid state sports tournaments as well.

Ada hayden has been really great for trout but for an hour and a half drive to catch my five in an hour or less. It got old after the second trip. I also heard of good sized walleye and possible perch in there but no success yet to two full days of fishing. I believe im going to move my perch quest on to another lake again. Oh and yea and i didnt even try the hand auger at ada hayden. I bought myself the jiffy pro 4. Really enjoying it

I usually fish ada once or twice in the winter. A buddy wanted me to fish the last stocking w him, so I did. I had 3 on the ice, before they even stocked it. Lots of trout in it, considering its been 3-4 seasons, of twice a yr stocking. The lake gets very little pressure, and they live yr round in it, because of it's deep cold spring water. It's just irritating that the city allows the DNR to run a chainsaw on the lake, flinging bar oil in the water for 15 minutes while opening the hole to put the trout in, but a guy cant run a gas auger, which does no water polution. The city also lets the fire and rescue run a chain saw and cut a HUGE hole in the ice with it, for under water rescue training. Not to mention that the city does nothing to try to scare the geese off of the lake, and they put much more pollution in the lake, then all of the gas augers in the state could.
