I am still trying to figure out just what I want to do with a front auger rack? I am also trying to figure out how to stow a bucket, shovel, tow strap, scoop, rod and a flasher on the sled yet still easily accessed...
CMMahy, I was considering with the same setup but off the front bumper, can you comment on the red straps?
jasond37, I did look at the auger rack you have, how did you mount it on the front? Why only smallrides?
Thanks again for your input, bart

AHH MAN!!! 1994 Cougar 440! My first sled my eyes ever seen. And boy do I miss that sled! Brings back memories. Quick sled for their day!Good old Cougar, great snowmobile and i think its the one heavier than the El Tigre but it is loud and fun!
Anyone remember Rupps, Scorpions, Chaparrels, etc.? Ahhh...the good 'ol days. Sorry...just a quick trip down memory lane :'(
i like your style layne... and that second to last pic is amazing!

Still "arranging" things like the GPS and mount. Did not like the RAM mount (not strong/solid enough) so relocated the windshield to the front box/auger mount; making room on the handlebars for a homemade GPS mount. Don't use the windshield or the front auger carrier in the summer months, so that worked out well.
Also want to do an Otter Medium Monster Box on the rear; but don't have room in the 10' trailer for it. The machine, with tracks is 9' and, as is, there is not much vertical room either. I need to go for a 12 or 14' long X 7' wide X 5' high, enclosed trailer.
I like hoff's sled setup but I could not deal with everything being "exposed" like that. I like my gear clean and dry when I get to and on the ice, with minimal fuss loading and unloading.
moved my GPS to the front rack off a ram mount, a lot less vibes there.
I have my GPS on the handle bar and the vibration make it hard to read, got to reach up and steady it at times. Rethinking the setup and it's the little tweaks can be pretty time consuming getting things just right.I agree with those ideas. I keep my auger out on the front rack and other "little" things in the box under the auger. I use a handheld depth finder to verify depth and structure, then I get the flasher and a rod out of the rear box. I don't uncover the flip over until I'm ready to settle in to some fish. ;D
I have a 12' trailer, things are just squeezing in so far. The auger rack going up front will be even tighter.
As far as things exposed, I do want the auger, scoop, flasher, bait and two rods readily available when on the search/mobility?
Again awesome setup!
Sold the 300 cc on the left and picked up a new 550 cc Tundra on the right. Haven't out fitted her yet.

I'm not real familiar with sleds, it's been quite a few years since I've been on one, but on ATV's the handle bars have a lot of vibrations. There's a lot of RAM mount options out there, if you could get it off the handle bars, I'm sure it'd be a lot easier to read.
I'm looking at my options off the handle bar, Thanks.I mounted a piece of custom cut 2X2X1/4" aluminum angle across the handlebars and have a rigid mount for the GPS. No vibrations and no problem reading it.

IMO - it's the mount that adds enough vibration that reading the screen is tough. I'm using a Lowrance BAJA 580C with the fishing hotspots maps and loaded with trails and waypoints (collected from the soft water and the boat) and a map program transferred to the GPS.
Congrats Rat. I know you've been wanting to make this switch for a while. Hope everything is set properly
on the new sled (i.e. jets, oil pump, etc) and you don't have to go through what so many other Skidoo owners
did (including me >:( )

Here's my rig this year. it's a work in progress. I've since acquired some tire chains and bucket hangers for the rear.
hey now that's pretty slick did you build or buy the ski mounts because i may have to build the same kinda set up also how is it in deep snow?
I bought the mounts. I found the instructions online and bought all the parts off of eBay. (Cost can vary depending on what's available at the time you look.)
I have not tried it in too deep of snow yet. I did get it stuck in about 8" of snow on the lake but I think that was due to digging down to the ice and losing traction. That's when I decided to order some tire chains. Some people use snowmobile studs, and that would be a better choice for faster riding but I didn't want to invest that much into it at this point.
if you can weld or have some metal skills I don't think it would be too difficult to fabricate a set. It is basically two pieces of angle steel bolted together and drilled at the top to match the lug pattern of my quad and drilled at the bottom to mate up to a set of Ski Doo Precision Skis.
It seems to work well and allows me to save a little more before buying a new 4x4.
With no snow on the ground, this was my mode of transportation today to make a quick fishing trip down to our pond.
Loaded all the gear in the bucket and drove down through the back forty, didn't take it out on the ice just b/c I didn't want to risk my baby falling through the ice.
With no snow this year the sleds haven'left the garage (1997 polaris rmk 700 modded right out, 1978 kawasaki intruder 440) and haven't bothered to take trikes (2 1983 honda 200e's, 1984 honda 200s) out since the ice has been thick enough to drive on. Also have the 8x8 argo project I'm rebuilding with a diesel motor transplant. And my truck is a 2006 f150 with 35" nitto mud grapplers, 2" lift and some modifications I keep secret, have yet to get it stuck since put new tires on and we go wheeling all the time year round.

Welcome to the shanty DLB, glad to have ya aboard ! Best of both worlds right there !
yes, oil is thin and smells like gas, i think. Oil leaks from seal while sitting.not running . Engine starts and runs fine, but knocking.Ok the oil is leaking out because it is too thin. Drain oil and replace with new and problems should be solved. Should not leak or make noise anymore. It the future make sure to turn of the gas so it can't run into the engine while in storage. Or drain the gas out completely. I hope you didn't run it too long with gas in your oil?
had the machine for 4 years, never had this problem, but will try it now. How does gas leak into oil ? Guess I should start turning it off when I shut it down.Because of its age things don't work like they should. There are different designs for getting the fuel to the carb. I will assume yours is gravity feed with a vacuum shut off as well as a manual shut off. The vacuum shut off is bad or dirty and it is allowing gas to flow even though the engine is not running. This happens allot when this type of system is stored for long periods of time. You would never notice it if you ran it daily.
Ok, back to what this thread is about ................ ;DJust a quick question on the tracks. Do you run them year 'round, or switch back to wheels in the summer?? And thanks for getting us back on track! ;D ;)2
I'd love to get some tracks but sleds are just too damn funBut can you plow snow with a sled, or use it in the woods in the summer?? If you can only have/afford one, this is the way to go and get year 'round use out of it!! IMHO!!
Nope none yet!I've read reports on ATV's and UTV's equipped with tracks and most never go back to wheels. If I could, I would want a UTV for it's added versatility with the small bed, etc. Just my preference, but I like your set up also!! ;D
I do carry everything in the sleigh though. :)
This is the exact reason I bought the quad with the tracks on it.
Driving the quad with the tracks kinda makes you feel like your driving a little tank and you can go anywhere. :)
Ok, back to what this thread is about ................ ;D
It's the 2011 850 Polaris XP with EPS.
I love the tracks in deep snow because it makes you feel like your floating on air. :)
Quote " I find it a "bear" in tight handling on bare ground."
The EPS helps enormously with steering and the tracks. When moving I can steer with my little finger and one hand while stopped or moving slow.
I was wondering how well the EPS would hold up to the tracks, no issues to date then?I was chatting with the outfit that I purchased from - out west - they say they have had excellent success with the Polaris EPS system. They put on some pretty tough miles and rough handling.
I forgot, one problem.
Did they send you the support brackets for the A-Arms? Polaris got them from Tatou because the A-Arms were bending.
Front and rear.
The brackets were free and were installed for free.
is that a sled or an energy drink can? ???

Whats the reason for not going with front tracks?
I had front and rear tracks on my Grizzly. The thing could go through anything, but it was hard to steer, slow, heavy, hard to steer, hard on fuel, and threw snow all over. Did I mention hard to steer? What kind of tracks you have on the Griz? I got the Tatou 4s sytem and I don't get much snow throwing at all. And the tracks are geared so the front is always "pulling" just a bit more than the rear is "pushing" So I don't get that "driving the front tracks" thing. And the this gearing resolves a LOT of the hard steering issues. I'd like Power Steering but I can live well without it.
By having the skis on the front vs. tracks, I get more power and top end speed because it's not driving the front tracks. I can turn with one hand, use less fuel, stay dry, and can ride on the trails legally in Minnesota. When summer rolls around I just keep the fuse out of the 4wd and leave the tracks on. For what I use it for, it's a no brainer.

I researched long and hard before making a choice on the tracks. I think it paid off. Track choice/design really depends on the use.
Its been a blast but I wish the rain would not have washed the local snow away. Studded my tracks this week so it will be interesting to see how it goes on the clean ice now.You will like the studs and the performance on the ice. If you tow anything (like a sled or flip-over shantie) watchout when you slow down and in turns - they like to go on by you ;D

This is nothing compared to today's machines, but for the price, it should do me some justice. 1992 Arctic Cat Lynx/340. Hoping to have a blast with this and most importantly get me to those honey holes I was not able to reach on foot. (crossing fingers it will drag my new ice castle once its finally done.)

I have the same sled and it had no problem pulling a 4 x 7 shack. That is awesomesauce to hear Jerrife. :) We have had it out a few times this year just for joyriding and it seems to have enough low end torque to manage a shack, as long as we have snowcover over the ice. Now I can put that thoght to rest, just gotta finish up the shack before springtime, rofl.
gbfdcapt4b: I really like the tip up organizer you made. How did you put that together? Looks like you have a handle on the front so they must all be connected somehow? Great idea!!

Thorney that box on the back with the seat where did you get that ??
anybody have a way to get more traction with a snowmobile.... cheap way?Studs, their not exactly cheap but you will thank yourself for the investment if you have problems with spinning on the ice. Then get some good carbides and it will ride like its on rails on the ice and go exactly where you want it to go

Practical - meh. Dangerous - oh yeah. Fun Factor - boing! I want one!!! ::)
well heres my rig ive been working on for a copuple weeks! still a few things to do, like mount a large storage box on the back, and an auger mount on the front. Also need to put on the hand warmers and new grips. Finish my skid plate, and find some 2 link chains for the back! this is an 85 honda trx 250 2X4. the front wheel bearings were shot and wore the spindle down quite a bit. got the wheeler for nothing, and had an arctic cat chassis laying around :) should do well pulling the little smitty sled i built. i used an old on the roof luggage carrier. the white egg shaped ones, mounted on skis for that

Pick it up in a few days ;DThat's pretty nice looking - any mods planned? Track studded? Gear mounts?
It's getting an auger rack and a GPS, other than that I have no clue. I shouldn't need studs, most lakes have plenty of snow on them around here.bart (on here) has a pretty nice setup. ;)
I've been going through this thread, looking for ideas and I really don't have a clue what I should do yet.
Well me and my ice fishing buddy aka my dad will have it easier this coming year along with the new shack I am building he went and got a new yamaha 450 ESP in camp I can't wait till we get to go pick it up.
Here's a pic from today. Got to add a flip over to the train asap. I got sick of the tow bars coming off the eye hooks so I changed them out for closed rings and added carbines for connecting. Also have a ring and carabiner on the back of the jetsled to attach another if I have someone else with me, or to pick up walkers on my way in/out.
Finally got a trailer this fall too, now I can lock all my gear and do over night trips.
Nice - Enclosed trailer, IMO, is likely one of the nicest additions to the fishing gear. Equipment is protected, safe, and "CLEAN". ;D
I do the same deal with my tracked wheeler.

The rear has two plates to reinforce the edge of the sled. Welded the hinge to the top plate and bolted them together to sandwich the sled between them. Strong as hell and ZERO flex. Worked better than I had planned. I have a Jet Sled Magnum to put behind that as well so it should take it no problem.

The Prospector kit is the track set.
Just picked this up today, '13 Sportsman 500ho with 250 miles on her. Now it's time to add some goodies for the upcoming season.

That thing is great! I've never seen one before, can you tell us a little about it?
Nice! Ever get it stuck? :o
Nice! Ever get it stuck? :o
No, I have never had it stuck, but we joke that if I ever do we will need a helicopter to lift it out, It is a great trail machine and an even better ice sled.
For sure two tracks is better than one. ;D Any idea what it weighs, bet it's not real heavy in comparison to some of the 1200cc big boys nowadays.
Was wondering the same. It sure is cool, but what would you pull it out with if need be, a Snow Bear? :unsure:Do the same as I do with my tracked wheeler - I'm probably right in line with your weight. I have a winch mounted so I can move it from front to rear and I carry a nice tow strap with a piece of angle iron. Drill a hole put the angle iron with the end of the strap attached down the whole and use it as an anchor for the winch. Never had to do this, but I'm prepared. @)
Its right around the 900 lbs and we estimate 1200 lbs with 2 guys aboard. It has remarkable power and floats very well across ditches and fields. The running gear is basically two Ski-Doo Everests side by side with the 450LC rotary valve engine mounted on top. in the front is a trunk like a VW bug would have. It is geared lower than most of this size, top end is about 55 ~ 60mph depending on the load.

Lousy photo, but she's just arrived at her new home. The trusty old 1988 Safari is going to a new home soon.

Now that should be a very nice setup. Can't wait for the pics. Congrats !!
Looks nice. I'm hoping to have mine on the ice Saturday. Waiting for wheels and tires to show up at this time.
You won't be disapointed. I got a 2014 Camo Viking.

cant wait to get this unit back on the ice only question is where u wanna go?
Finally got a chance to use it this year. In the process of making a custom sleigh so I can haul even more crap out on the ice.
Nothing better than "More crap" on the ice. ;D
What's the little silver coloured box in pic 1 attached to the rear box?
Here is my ride Can Am Outlander. Added Rear Basket for this year.
Here's my rig.
had the the tracked outlander couple of years now not so good on glare iceI just went to a local ATV store and bought a box of Kold Kutter ice studs. They work great. I just look over the tracks periodically and replace whatever ones are missing. No more sliding on glare ice! They just screw in.

got any pics? i thought of that but was leary because of tear outs and wrecking a track that'd be priceyI did that on my Camoplast Tatou 4s tracks more than 5 years ago. Have not lost one yet. I don't go spinning the tracks out much though and I don't run them on anything but snow and ice. They work great. The 4s tracks have the "spots" made for the screws/studs. If you don't want that you could always put in the expensive snowmobile trsack studs.
got any pics? i thought of that but was leary because of tear outs and wrecking a track that'd be priceyI don't think I took any pics. I'll try to remember to take some when I recheck them. They do come out. I haven't noticed any damage. I don't get real long ones. They come in lots of sizes. I just get the 5/8" screws and use a driver. It's really easy. I have total control even on the slickest ice.

I ordered some gold ice scews, for my front tires. How many do you put in each tire ?You know I didn't really count. I went every other bar if I remember. I believe I got a couple of bags of 250, and that got me through a couple of years. I just ordered a bag of Kold Kutters last night on Ebay for $25 I think. That should last me a couple more years.

Shanty fits perfectly in the back when folded. Chairs, heater, Vexilar and more fit neatly underneath. Perfect set up for 2 guys, or my wife and I. Plus with the half top we stay nice and warm as the motor heats up the cab very nicely.

Thanks man, there is a YouTube link right above the last picture... Here it is again..

Right now with the current sprocket it goes about 15mph.. But that's what it did with the 3hp.. Running 13hp now, with a simple sprocket change, I'm sure I could easily double the MPH with ponies to spare..

replaced the 2004 Sportsman with a 2019 CAN Am north edition
Sweet setup Roccus !!Love it, apples to oranges compared to my sportsman..
How do you like the Can Am ??
That's my next ride! Fantastic! Jealous from Wisconsin! My polaris had intermittent electrical issues... several times the fuel pump would not power up, had it to the dealer several times, they found nothing. . Best thing I did was get the can am
I've had a 2004 Polaris and 2009 Can AM (Think it was an 09). The Polaris was a cold starting SOB. Also always had electrical issues with it. My Can AM never liked sub zero weather. seemed to die when i needed to get off the ice. Not sure how to solve that issue, but left me stranded 1x or 2x. How are the reviews the last few years with the CAN AM's?

Finally got around to building my rear rack and setting the wheeler up for the upcoming ice season (disclaimer : I took the ice fishing stuff off after the pics and put it back into trail riding set up for the rest of the summer)
this is the rack I designed. If I ever do a second one it would use a 2" square tube on the vertical part instead of a reducer. Left the pin out do to needing to oversize the hole by a 1/32" so the pin fits easier. pin in the vertical part is the pin for the hole without a pin. (https://i.postimg.cc/4dwFRrcr/8.jpg)
this is the tub and the rack both.
This is the front carrier. going to replace the factory bracket with one that I will build. it will move the carrier closer and raise it level with the front rack when done. By doing this I could put the plow on under the carrier and have room to raise and lower the plow.
this is the whole machine with the carrier in front. only will set up like this when running my XL6000T Garage Hub House. Will be able to drive the wheeler inside the hub and sit on the wheeler and fish.
this is how I will set it up if I want to fish from the wheeler but still carry a small hub should I want to set up and stay in one place for awhile. Front carrier comes off and the plow goes on.
Doing either of these set ups still allows me to pull a sled type house if I want to use one since the rear rack is high enough for a house to clear under it.
also added the following for electronics :
Ram Mount to hold my Ipad which I run Navionics on. off this mount I can attach my phone to the mount too.
Added a FLX 28 to the rear rack in a way that I can sit sideways on the seat and fish off the wheeler but still see the flasher easily.
for safety gear I added a throw bag and will be adding a Nebulus Flotation Pack to the front rack between the auger and the cup holder.
Future plans will be to build a rack to hold my Legend XL one man house and a rack to hold my Nanook Thermal two man house.
Can't wait for the season to get here, although I do want to get a little bow hunting in before hitting ice season hard and heavy this year.
How do you keep your phone or iPad from freezing? When it gets cold, the battery voltage on my iPhone 7 drops and eventually it shuts down. If I warm it up in my pocket and reboot, it comes back on line. Do you have a heater in that iPad case?
Had the I pad out twice now with me and haven't had any issues. nothing is heated for it. only thing heated on my wheeler is the hand grips.
I am building a heated case to see if I can get mine to stay running on my dash. We get fog and blizzards, and it is a 30,000 acre lake, so you can wander a long ways in a whiteout without GPS. I assume Minnesota is plenty cold, that you have given your rig a good test.

matzilla, am I reading your post correctly that the machine is an '03? Looks almost like brand new. Must have only been driven by an old lady on Sundays. ;) Nice.
Got tired of "stuffing my 10 ft. long tracked wheeler and shelter in the 6X12 enclosed trailer.
New tandem axle w/brakes, 7X16. Might even have room for my partner's shelter in there.

Good move on the winch rope, I still have one 4-wheeler with a cable up at the cabin, what a pain. You might want to get a strap to put around a tree to connect your winch line to in case you end up doing any of that sort of thing.
Nice set up Phil now you can drag Jimmy down to eye fish with us 👍
Last season used w the 2" lift

Just picked up an Outlander Max XT 850 to upgrade my old ‘03 Arctic Cat 400. This thing is a beast.
you will love it.. I have a 2019( bought in the fall of 2018) 850 outlander North addition.. I studded the tires with carbide studs and have yet to need chains... it's head and shoulders over my old Polaris.
No ice here yet, but Calamity Bob just got loaded in the trailer, ready to go. Gunner is my navigator, nobody likes chasing flags more than him.

I got the idea from Bart on here so he gets the credit but it works awesome. I’ve since quit hauling it in my truck I use my trailer now. I just didn’t like driving that thing up the ramps anymore LOL
Do you mind if I ask which rack that is on the back of that wheeler? Pretty slick
Although having posted this ride previously, I've just recently mounted my Garmin EchoMAP CHIRP 53dv securely to the handlebar riser. Can now run-and-gun quite a bit more efficiently, no longer requiring my ice shuttle backpack.
Sweet setup!

Happy with my Tundra too. Auger rack and a new flip over this year. That's about it for mods/upgrades but its pretty compact and very comfortable. Not the fastest thing out there though.Very Nice! Can’t ever go wrong with a Tundra. I’ve had a few. What did you use for your auger rack? Great photos!

Sweet ride Badger...scarce as hen's teeth
I was looking at Kijiji- getting one out of Canada, but you can't go there yet- even for something as important as a snowmobile in June!
The guy I got mine from had 3 of them, all from Minnesota DNR, speckled with tree marking paint, and all about 1000 miles. T&T Sports and Lawn- in Rush City, MN.
I sold my Polaris 570 with tracks and just bought a lightly used 2019 Polaris 550 LXT ES last weekend. Looking forward to the mods.

Hi Friends -
I have a nice 4 wheeler for ice fishing when the snow isn't too deep. However, snow has been very deep the past couple years and I think it's time to invest in a snowmobile for ice fishing and just bombing around the lake. I highly doubt I'll do any or much trail riding. I'd like to keep the budget less than 5K (prefer $2500)? What am I looking for? Appreciate it. ps. I've never owned a snowmobile before so all feedback is really appreciated.

A 5K budget would buy the first 4 snowmobiles I have owned. I picked up 2 sleds and a trailer for $1500- old Yamahas from the 80s- the guy had them as loaners for company, and took good care of them. I got 3 years out of them, just a little maintenance, and sold them for what I paid. That is my first suggestion: You care as much about the guy you buy from as the make and model. Since 5K means used, and you really don't care about advanced suspension or horsepower, you are looking for a guy that cares for his stuff. Granted, those guys don't sell every 2 years to get the newest color sled, but they will be as reliable as new, maybe better.
Second: Simple is better. It is getting tough to buy a basic sled, but they cost less to maintain and are more reliable. I stick to air cooled 2 strokes. Newer sleds can produce more power, but that means water cooling, and a radiator, water pump, ... Those old 550 air cooled engines keep plugging. I went so far as to drive halfway across the country to get an air cooled single cylinder sled for $5k, and they have not made those in over 10 years.
Third: I think you want to figure out how to get a rack or a box on the back. Utility sleds make this easy, but touring sleds sometimes also have something you can adapt. Pulling sleds is OK, but it beats up your gear, and slows down your speed. If there is slush, the drag of a sled can be the difference between getting stuck and not. The sled also fills up with slush and snow, and can be a mess at the end of the day.
As far as brands, I have had Ski-Doo and Yamaha- I think Yamaha builds a better machine for longevity- but they are being edged out of the market bit by bit, so there are not plentiful. I sold an old Phazer that never failed me for $400. I always thought a VK540 would be a great machine- it is one of the few still made with a 2 stroke air cooled engine, wide track, low range, and a big rack, but they are scarce, and people keep them forever. Near me, Polaris is popular, but I have never owned one.
Good luck in your search- you can get a good enough machine for a few hundred if you find the right guy- Wisconsin has not had a lot of snow lately, so there may be someone thinking about giving up a lightly used sled. Get searches going on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, and keep an eye out as you are driving around. I would also make an ISO post on the Wisconsin ice shanty group- someone might know someone.
Honda pioneer 700, otter lodge. Made a “tonneau cover” that Carry’s my auger, anything in the box stays dry and clean. I’m lucky enough to live on a lake and can just drive out from my yard. You're living my retirement dream right there MNice!
