Rust stained jigs
« on: Nov 17, 2004, 08:27 PM »
Well guys, I screwed up.  On a fishing trip this summer my "winter" box got rained on.  Not realizing that some of the rain got inside of the box I put it away with the rest of my gear.  Now some of my jigs are shot.  Nothing I can do about those, but some are still good but just rust stained.  Any help would be appreciated.  I was thinking of using an old tooth brush and a little CLR or something similar.  I know it will remove the rust stains, but would like to leave the paint on them if I could.  TIA.

What a great Idea Oak,
I've used toothpaste to polish jewelry for years now.

I've found that Formula 409 works wonders.  I had some Custom Jigs n Spins Purists and Rat Finkees get stained and 409 cleaned them up good as new!!!

I always use toothpaste. The ones with baking soda work a little better as it's a slight abrasive. Also works great on spoons (cleos, kastmasters, etc)

Try a bit of lacquer thinner on a paper towel or rag and rub the stains off.   Rust stains come off easy and the color on the jig will be brilliant again.

Just to let y'all know, I used a product called Iron Out.  I found it at the Piggly Wiggly.  It's a powder that can be disolved in warm water.  I just disolved a couple tablespoons in a miracle whip jar and added the jigs.  I left them in for about 45 minutes and they came out nice and clean.  One word of caution though, on one glow paint jig the paint softened and peeled.  Other than that, it worked out pretty good.
