Hey Fishingfool...WELCOME BACK !!!  We really need someone who has his finger on the pulse of things in your area.  I owned a house at Sylvan Lk. for 23 years, and in all that itme I never fished Whaley.  Keep us informed about conditions, especially on Sylvan since it's one of the lakes in the running for our yearly get-together.

Do you have an address for the Shot Shop ???  Would like to stop in there before the season gets started.

North South Lake usually freezes wayyyyy before any of the waters down here. My father lost a 3 foot tiger at the boat two years ago up there(no leader, 4lb test, small rapala) but they're hard to catch. They're in there though. The guy at the boat concession says there is also a small pop. of northern pike in there, due to an illegal stocking. Never caught one. Very good access, and a guarantee to freeze early and solid.

Here's another idea to think about............
There have been many suggestions over the last few years about doing a group Sleepover on the ice.  If we can get a few interested parties, maybe we can combine that with our annual Get-Together.

Any takers?????????

P.S. ---- I'm In !!

Its been drained and refilled several times.  I caught my first walleye and bullhead jigging there.  I always found it slow fishing.

i grew up hunting and fishing orange, sullivan and ulster county. spent over 30 years down there. most of the good lakes are privately owned and most aren't worth the long ride to get there.i have made the king of the ice for over 17 years before i moved to the adirondacks 10 years ago but do get back down once in awhile. i'd be interested in possibly attending a get together if there is one. let me know when and where, thanks and good luck out there.

C'mon Orange County anglers .....aren't there any lakes in that area able to support our gathering on the ice ? Any contest/derbies ?.... Any Fire Departments or Hunting Clubs hosting anycontests this season on  private or limited access lakes  ?  Orange county is lil more centrally located.....

Leaving in an hour or so for Middletown.......hope to see most of you guys up there.

There are starting to be more and more suggestions about different lakes....most of which nobody knows well enough to say they will absolutely be frozen by Feb.  So....let's stick with the lakes we are sure of.  These are the choices....please vote for the one you want:

SYLVAN LAKE  (Dutchess Cty.)
SODOM RES. (EAST BRANCH)  (Putnam Cty.)
LAKE HUNTINGTON  (Sullivan Cty.)
LAKE SUPERIOR STATE PARK  (Sullivan Cty.)
WHITE POND  (Putnam Cty.)

I think the East Branch Reservoir has the most potential and is the most equidistant but I think they're all good choices.

Sylvan is deep and questionable. Whites is only 15 feet deep at the max.

Whites gets my vote

Not sure we need any more choices but Morgan Lake has good parking and they stock a few hundred trout around christmas time. If Sylvan is picked i might be able to get some extra parking spaces, i work at the summer camp there, i should be able to plow enough room for a dozen cars.

I would be interested in learning more about Sylvan lake. Looks big and deep enough to sustain good freshwater gamefish. Anybody know much else besides what is covered on the NYDEC CONTOUR MAP LAKES SECTION?

I would go to either Lake Huntington and White Pond . HardWater Diehard and anyone else for your info. there is a book put out yearly titled Jack Stewart Jr. Memorial Fish and Wildlife Fund Southern New York Fishing directory . The book covers Westchester to Dutchess counties on the east side of Hudson river and Rockland to Ulster on the west side. It has maps on some lakes and other info. . I pick up a copy every two years since most of the book stays the same from year to year . also a section on Sullivan county. Another source of lake maps and info. is the Sportsman's Connection Series of books . Try your local bait shops or Dick's and Gander Mountain for either book.

Iceman...........  good to hear from you!  It's "members choice" as to which lake we'll meet at.  Check out the previous posts and cast your vote for the lake YOU want to meet at!!  Stay in touch....if you don't have my number, send me a PM and I'll give it to you.  Let's do some fishing this winter!!

I had a summer home at Sylvan Lake for 23 years and did a whole lot of fishing and SCUBA diving there over those years.  Sylvan Lake was formed by a quarry operation that hit an underground river many years ago.  The lake is about 90 ft. deep in the middle and rumours of Lake Trout have circulated there for many years.  Based on my experience , there are good populations of:  LLargemouth Bass, Pickerel, Brown & Rainbow Trout, Panfish.  There SHOULD BE a population of Crappies in there, but I've never found them.  Likewise, I've never seen an actual Laker come out of there.
Since the lake is so deep, it takes a good cold winter to freeze it up solid.  When it does, the fishing is good.  There is a DEC access / parking lot on Old Sylvan Lake Rd., big enough for six cars.
