Bald Eagle on Toga
« on: Jan 28, 2010, 04:00 PM »
Saw a bald eagle on Saratoga Lake this afternoon off Fitch Rd.  Looks like it was trying get in on a fish left by some fisherman but the gulls ate first.  Sorry for the lame pics, best I could do with my camera at that distance ...

That is awesome Sullymon. That spot you hit with me early in the season is getting some eagle activity.

HAHA I think its funny when someone leaves a fish on the ice and an eagle comes down and takes it.
Saw it happen twice last year, and I have been seeing more Eagles flying around this week in Montezuma.

I have had them snag my pike off the ice before, there are alot of them around here.
If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

Cool pics, they really don't seem that "rare" any more; had a few on LG take floating lakers. Majestic birds, but they are scavengers.

Not scavangers, but opportunistic feeders.

Eating Habits
Eagles feed mainly on fish, but water fowl, small mammals and carrion supplement their diet, especially when fish are in short supply. Eagles can fly up to 30 m.p.h. and can dive at speeds up to 100 m.p.h. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot fish at distances up to 1 mile. Eagles swoop down to seize a fish in their talons and carry it off, but can only lift about five pounds. Under certain circumstances, eagles have been known to drown trying to lift a fish that weighed too much.

Bald Eagles have also been known to swim to shore with a heavy fish using their strong wings as paddles.

Cheeks out!!!

Not scavangers, but opportunistic feeders.

You can sugar coat the name if you want but all opportunistic feeders are scavengers at some point. ;) Most of the times I see bald eagles around here they are in the process of scavenging, either deer of fish. I know they didn't kill the deer or the fish.

I can find quotes too ;D:

Quote
The adult Bald Eagle can be distinguished by the white of its head and tail. This colouration is fully developed by the time a bird is about four years old.

Adult males have a body length of 76 to 86 cm (30 to 34 in.) and a wingspan of 178 to 210 cm (70 to 83 in.). Females are larger: their bodies are 89 to 94 cm (35 to 37 in.) and their wingspan is 198 to 225 cm (78 to 88 in.).

The Bald Eagle is more a scavenger than a predator. It subsists mainly on fish, and most of its food comes from what it finds cast onto shore. It occasionally makes its own kills, and, when fish are not available, it may take a few birds.

This majestic bird is found across all of southern Canada, but is most common on the Pacific coast. The Bald Eagle's range also extends northward into Alaska and southward into the rest of the continental United States.

Dude you are insane ... I was thinking about you guys after I left "bet they won't stay around long", but it sounds like you stuck it out.  Blowing snow and 40+ mph wind ... Nuts!  Not that I haven't done that before, guess I'm getting old!

You and I should get together again and slap some pannies ... feed some eagles walleye (kidding).  Before the seasons over we'll have to fish again ... no tipups! Combsey too.  Maybe LG.

Nice pics..  Who really cares if it is opportunistic or a scavenger, what is important is that you see them and they have made it back from the brink of extinction.
