Title: Northern Challenge 2017
Post by: TheThinIce on Jan 27, 2017, 05:53 PM
Looking forward to our 16th year participating in the Northern Challenge! How's the ice looking on Simon?

Ice conditions right now are great.  Hopefully we won't get too much snow and screw things up, but I don't think we will.

Sounds great. Definitely don't want too much snow. The 6" that's on top of the ice is just enough!

We thank all the competitors who keep coming back year after year.  If you never were involved in a derby of this size you can't know how much work goes into it.  Sometimes I wish I never got involved because of the long hours, but then we see the happy faces and satisfied competitors and we keep plugging away at it.  Posts like yours make it worth the effort!  Thank you, and thank everyone involved!

Connected on the east side of Tupper Lake just south of the town. If you go over the bridge from the south look to your right. There it is. Fished it when I had time and always Top Notch. Just get up early though...........

Well this year I originally didn't plan to go. My 7yr old daughter Alivia asked me if I can take her again like last year......how can a dad say no to that. Time to fill up some propane and save up some $$ and we will see you all on the ice. We got about 8-10 inches of powder in the Saranac lake area. Some spots more some spots less. Not sure how much fell in tupper. I do know however dragging my shanty in it today was exhausting....

I can't wait for Saturday! This will be our first year attending. I was told that only 5 tip ups are allowed per angler. The rod and gun website states all DEC rules apply so can 7 legally be used? Really looking forward to this derby and hoping to make it a yearly event. Good luck to all !

no the tourney rules are 5 per person and no fishing can be done in a shanty....you can but if u get a pike in one its DQ

EDIT Totally can use 7 talked to him

I spoke with Dave from the tupper lake gun club. He said you can use all 7 lines in the water as stated in the dec rule book. He also stated that in the rule book an angler is only aloud 15 hook points total. So if you use treble hooks each one has 3 hook points so you would only be able to use 5 tip ups. I was not aware of this rule until he made me aware of it. Can't wait to get up to tupper lake this year!!

That 15 hook points is per line

Thank you for the clarification. This was copied right off of the dec website

"each line is limited to not more than five lures or baits or a combination of both.
in addition, each line shall not exceed 15 hook points in any combination of single, double or treble hooks."

Glad we can all be on same page Dec tries to play on words. but we can each help at some point with each other

We will allow 7 lines this year due to D.E.C.'s change last year.  No fishing in shelters though.  (Hopefully to cut down on cheating)

Thank you for clarifying. It's sad people need to cheat even at an ice fishing tournament.

Really looking forward to the weekend, hope to meet some new fellow Shanty members and catch some fish!

It really is an awesome tournament! I'm all for minimizing those that cheat. I wish everyone coming in with coolers could be randomly checked to scare those thinking of bringing in fish. Even the threat of doing that would make people think twice. It's unfortunate that that should even have to be done in the first place.

You get one tag this year for weigh in and prize confirmation.  By the way, the lunker pool is doing real well.  Should be another LARGE payout for the winner.

3-4 inches of snow at most maybe more in other spots. A good 8-10 inches of ice plenty safe for sleds and wheelers.

Only 8-10" of ice??  We have 12-16" on Sac Res. Would have thought there would be at least 16"+

Jeff. Mainly 6-10' straight out from launch, towards the right gets deeper as you go towards the back drops to 30' bowl. Not any "official" topo maps anywhere.

Hi guys - just wondering about the no fishing in shelters rule.  Understanding no pike would count for the tourney, I was thinking about jigging for panfish.  Do people jig for something for the table when the flags arent popping?

You can jig outside your shanty....you can even enter a winning pike if you jig it up outside your shanty where other people can see it.  You can't have over seven lines though.  We are just trying to cut down on cheating.  Anyone caught cheating (and we have caught some) are disqualified and will NEVER return, EVER!

there are always many side x side machines there. the DEC is not there to harass anyone as long as you abide by the rules set forth. keep in mind this is a small lake(pond) and will have 800-900 people fishing with most groups 4-5 people if not more accounting for quite a bit of space. this is not the place to be running your machine around at a high rate of speed or they will harass you. not directing this at you Framer1, just saying this in general. good luck and see everyone there come Saturday!!

Door prizes are picked at noon.  You have until 4 to pick them up at the prize trailer.  All other cash and 4 wheelers gets handed out at 4 until done.

While I can't say 100% that you won't get a ticket, D.E.C. has been pretty good and chances are you won't unless you start acting stupid. We have a quite a few side by sides who haven't been ticketed at the event.   Don't call attention to yourself and they will look the other way in most instances.  They have been pretty good for years.

A few years back, DEC and troopers were at the launch, ticketing everything they could. They left around 2pm. I asked why they left so early. I was told they ran out of tickets. Hundreds of tickets were handed out. I saw one guy get thirty. He was pulling a large sled with his 4 wheeler. Rope hitch, 10 people on it, no helmets, no lic. plate, no reg., no ins. card, excessive speed, no fishing lic., no bait receipt, SMOKING A JOINT while operating a motor vehicle and the guy was obnoxious to the cops. They threatened to arrest him. He calmed down. He paid dearly.

About 5 years ago, DEC went from fisherman to fisherman, checking fishing. lic. and bait receipts. Moral: Be sure all of your ducks are in a row, because you never know what the DEC and Troopers are looking for.

This derby is one of the best in the state!! Don't worry about entrants they will be well over 1000. huge prizes not so huge fish. the only problem I have ran into is finding a place to fish. lots of the locals will have shaks out and ice saved with sticks and reflectors. I usually just go out and start throwing the sticks as far as I can and start drilling. no person can reserve ice. you can fish away from the big crowd but you wont get a flag all day. I will be taking my snowmobile not chancing the slush like last weekend on cranberry. I have never had a problem w the law always have helmets and registration. oh and fishing license.

That's no joke. A sea of reflectors marking (reserving) the ice. We got on the ice at 3:30 AM last year, all we could see were sticks and reflectors in every direction we shined our lights. Moving in a different direction this year to avoid that. Hope to get into a nice spot. Hope its not too slushy. Good luck to all.

Not all those "saved" spots are from locals.  Many are from guys getting here early.  Nothing we can do about that except to hope that people will be civil to each other and show some respect.  Most people do.  No slush yet.  Perfect conditions right now, or at least as near to perfect as you can hope for.
Good luck to all fishermen and women and kids.  Thank you!

I'm very excited about this, my first time. Will going up with out a snowmobile or Atv be a issue? Won't be there until late tomorrow night, have not registered, will finding a decent spot on ice be out of the question?

There are fish away from the masses.i lived on that lake for 11 years.

That's what I'm hoping.

Many people fish with out machines, all depends on how far you wanna walk. As for decent spots to fish.... it's a crap shoot. Never know where you'll get the money fish.

You should be fine. We did not bring an ATV or snowmobile our first time. Obviously you will have to walk out to find a spot, but there are spots within walking distance. Good luck.

If you are walking you will be "in with the crowd".  But, winning fish come from anywhere on the pond.  Registrations will be open til 8 p.m. tomorrow.  Then reopen at 4 a.m.   Good luck.

Slow day, great time. Only 3 flags in our group of 6. No fish. Fished the back of the lake and survived the wind where we were. No door prizes and missed out on 50/50. Sold out of tickets by 12:30!!! First time ever was told. Biggest fish was just over 10lb I think. Many 3lbers won money. Snow started around 1 or so and still snowing. 4". Headed for dinner......

With the group of 4 guy we had like 5 flags and I had one automatic fisherman go of was pulling in and didn't think even had a fish because that was a 6+" golden shiner but get it to hole with no fight and was a 18" baby pike at 8:50.  Oh well was good day and spending the night was good in the hard side nice and warm all night and slept in zero gravity chair. Congrats to all the winners
Title: Re: Northern Challenge 2017

Congrats to the winners, several 3lb fish won money, 10lbs was the lunker of the day and paid out $4,500, yes that's right $4,500 in just the lunker pool and the guy won the hour so probably more like $5,000 off one fish. Was their biggest event yet.

For me it was a long day, one flag at 745 and dropped the bait, no flags the rest of the day and I fished alone, that made for a long day. Winds were pretty brutal out there, saw one shanty go for a ride. Congrats to the winners.

Thanks to all who came and supported us!  It was overwhelming as anyone who was there can tell you.  We actually ran out of 50/50 tickets!  That has never happened.  We are already starting to think about next year.  We may make a couple of small changes to tweak it.  Thanks again everyone and congrats to all the winners.  Once again, I wasn't one of them!

We actually bought a new PA system a year or two ago but the wire got broken somehow and we weren't able to use it and had to fall back on the bullhorns.  A friend and I were just discussing seeing if we can get more parking.  But this is town property and we need to run it by them.  We'll see how that goes.

this was my 8th year . That was lot people .      4 of us caught 2 pike and 1 perch and 1 large mouth  neighbors next to us won 1st place in one hours with 3.8

Was cold and slow fishing wise
Parking was  not ideal

sucks they switch the 4 wheelers to knocks

I drove My atv and was stopped to check my regs 2 times while locals right next to me no helmets     seems like they were just looking to bustin certain peoples chops

Over all good time had lot fun

I hope that the people who went down are ok

Couple suggestions
1. have a back up to pa system
2. Cap entrants 1100-1200
3.make entrants wear tags . Seem like lot people fished in pairs
4. KIds raffle or if the weigh in fish the win something

Be back next year

One flag, one fish. 22.5", just under 2lbs. No money. BUT! Looking at the fish closely, I saw 5" of skin off of his side, with big teeth marks on him. Can you imagine the size of the fish that did that? Wish I had caught HIM! lol Great time as always. Cudos to Dave, Mike and their crew. Can't wait for next year! Thanks Guys!

Lots of organizing and man hours go into making this tournament successful. Being our 15th year, I've witnessed many positive changes over the years based on entrant feedback and trial and error. I know Dave and Mike welcome any suggestions as to how to make the challenge a great experience for all of those coming to fish the Challenge. I agree that having a kids entry is an awesome idea to get our youth more involved in this sport and hopefully keeps them interested enough to come back year after year. Can't wait to see what tweaks there are at the Challenge in 2018.

this year was my 10th year. first couple were up at midnight and on the ice by 3-4am then fish all day and drive home. then I was fortunate enough to get a room at Red Top Inn, and I will never give that up, LOL. I have made a tradition of taking my son the past 3 years and will continue for the foreseeable future. this year I got 2 of my buddies and their sons to go, and needless to say they will be back as well. while we didn't catch any fish or get any door prizes we still had a great time. aside from the parking issues, which this year became rather interesting. I'm not sure anyone anticipated having 1400+ entries this year...... thus the selling out of 50/50 tix as well. these small things I'm sure will be shaken out. I would like the kid division or something special for them. the past couple years at the Walleye Challenge they have had special drawings for kids 12u(4 wheeler for the winner). great job by all involved with making this one of the biggest events in NYS (behind Walleye Challenge) cant wait for Northern Challenge 2018!!!

Your suggestions have been taken under advisement and will be discussed at our committee meeting.  While many people are unfamiliar with the 4 wheeler brand, I know people who own them and they love them.  If you should win one (if that's what we buy next year) and you don't want it, I will pay you quadruple what your entrance fee is for it!  LoL!   Mike

Had a great time, been coming up for the past three years.         Changes to think about to make fair for everyone. 1 don't allow any body in the tournament to be on the ice night before.  2 no one is allowed to stake out the ice as if they own it.

While in a perfect world these suggestions would be great, the truth is this "ain't no perfect world"!  There are just so many things we can control and these are not possible.  I do however, personally ride around checking at night for people doing things they shouldn't.  When you have that many people you can't keep everyone honest, but we do try.  And, if we do find someone doing things out of the way, they DO NOT COME BACK!  EVER!

No, don't worry.  If you want to sleep on the ice that won't be part of the changes.  We don't have a problem with that, especially when the motel rooms fill up so fast.
