I'm curious as to the percentage of us fisherman have ever had a close encounter and lived to tell the tale.
I'll start.. Never fell through, however was scared to crap more times than I could count, but no accidents.
-
I've never fallen through or really come close to it although I'm young and I've only been ice fishing maybe 4 seasons now.
-
Yes, I fell through once when I was 18 am much more careful now at 58 :o
-
Twice when I was young. Now I know what to look for and what to avoid.
-
Yes I have gone through a few times fortunately I have yet to see the bottom of the ice though. I have made a mistake in judgment a couple of times, but another couple of times just found a weak spot. I carry a spud and poke the ice every couple of steps nowadays since owning a spud I have stayed dry .
-
Nope, not yet and don't have any plans too.
Always send the heavier person out first to check the ice. ;)
-
I'm not sure I would consider this "falling through" but had to walk back to shore last year after the ice shifted away from shore

-
Yup, a few times. Its not as bad as you may think. I have only been in once over my head, and though it was somewhat scary, I was able to get out fairly easy.
BTW, I am the fat guy everyone talks about going out first.
-
Nope and hopefully won't ever but I don't want to jinks that.
-
I've been all the way under 3 times & through to the waist or armpits a couple more. Spudding your way around is the best way to avoid getting wet ( I learn slowly, but I DO eventually learn ;D ) but a couple times I just hit a bad spot on otherwise safe ice. These were the times I didn't go all the way under. This is my 45th year of ice fishing, many years I was out 4-5 times a week.
-
Yup, once when I was a kid. When your dad tells you to stay away from and inlet...STAY AWAY FROM THE INLET!! Lesson learned.
-
only gone through once over my head (small pond oswego county), adrenaline kicked in and i was back on the ice quickly....thankfully since i didn't have spikes on, always wear them now just in case; oh ive punched through a few times at big bay, oneida lake in march but mostly waist deep and its more of trip ender than a serious situation
-
I used to play a lot of pond hockey as a kid and I've broken through and gotten my feet wet and muddy before, but I've never been in a serious situation. Worst thing that's happened to me while icefishing is stepping in a hole. (knock on wood)
-
well i personally have only gone in once, i was riding my 4 wheeler on the king and was going towards mdb i was about 15 ft off shore closer to the sled trail entrance and i his some soft ice because it was like 40* that day and went in (only about 3 ft of water thank god! but i flipped right over the bars and landed on my back in the water! surprisingly i felt nothing but the cold water like i did a summer sult off it! i was fine and the quad was too! i learned not to go were no one was before you! my step father on the other hand was racing my uncle around the ice ovle and hit a completely frozen snow bank and his quad (grizzly 660) did about 4 flips and one landed on him! he thought he was fine so we straitened his racks and bars and went home. well he was in his office 2 days later and coughed and managed to brake two of his ribs!!! lets just say it was not a good day! be careful guys!! :o
-
These are great stories, i'm so interested in what you've all said. Thank you very much. It seems the winters in NY are getting milder by each passing year. I hope this isn't a permanent trend. This is my 2nd season fishing "as an adult". I've went plenty of times maybe 15 years back with my dad but he's long since retired the sport. I never remembered the ice so thin and shady like it's been recently from my childhood years.
-
No, I haven't. But I don't think I am infallible, so I carry picks, 50' rope, warm clothes & blanket in the car, keep the phone in a drybag, anything that could help if I do. Since I cannot afford a dry suit this year, I will wait till it is over 5" thick. Hows that saying go? Those that plan to fail and those that fail to plan.
-
Never have fallen through over my head as an ice fisherman, but when I was a youngster we used to play hockey and stuff on the local frozen creeks and rivers. We also used to time when the creeks would get swollen in spring but still would be frozen, then the ice flows would occur, the ice would start cracking and breaking and eventually moving.....we used to ride these ice flows, sometimes for a mile, I can remember one time the ice started stacking tall behind us as we were going down Fall creek and we jumped up and held the gurders of the bridge until the dangerous part of the ice flow passed, then let go and landed on a flat section and continued riding it.. It was just one of those things we did as kids that was stupid, but exciting. Fell through many times doing that almost broke some bones too, but have never been through much more than chest deep fishing, used to ride ice chunks on the Salmon River too, thats much safer and fun, I still do it if I find some weak shelf ice.
-
Fell thru saratoga lake @ 30 yrs. ago only waist deep jumped out left my gear on the ice went back to truck changed all my clothes and boots and went back out fishing don't remember if I caught anything that day but it made me think about safety on the ice . I fish a lot with my son now and we both enjoy and have a lot of respect for this sport.
-
I went through to my waist at the Chaumont bay launch it was still pitch black and it was early season and the launch ice had been broken up. It sucked it was the first day of my 3 day weekend there luckily I had a change of clothes and was able to fish.
Isn't it usually older guys or really out of shape guys that drown when they go through? I carry ice picks but I think I could get out without them.
-
How about making it an official poll? We'll run it for 10 days.
My vote.....YES!
And I hope I'm never that stupid again!
RG

RG
thanks rgfixit for the poll.
my vote is NO and I hope that it never becomes a yes.
-
yep
-
yes
-
No not in 50 yrs
-
One and a half times. Went through at Braddok up to my armpits checking out my new underwater camera. The "half" occured on I bay when I was showing a buddy how accurate my new gps was. I "refound" the day befores' fishing hole and stuck my entire leg through it. I looked like a one legged midget for a long time as my friend had to chip away the ice to get my foot out.
-
I have had a foot go through several times. I shave gone in up to my armpits. I have yet to go in over my head yet knock on wood
-
Once .
-
I went through a few years ago at whitney point when they were still working on the new boat ramp etc. But only up to my arm pits. Glad they had the water so low.
-
Yes, once, about 60 years ago. I can still remember the half mile walk back to the house. It was on Thanksgiving Day. We may never even see ice around here again that early...lol....hunts2l ong
-
Last year the back wheels of my wheeler broke through a pressure ridge. I fell completely through when i stepped off the machine.
-
For this poll im glad to be in the minority and havent gone in and hope that never changes
-
i always fell thru when i was a youngin. We have a brook/ river that ran behind our house. well winter comes and ice breaking we would go. fellin/went swimming alot , that was the fun part. House was a close walk thou. did save a child hood friend who went thru to his armpits from the ice. Ah the good old days.
-
no, and I hope i never do!!
-
Twice- St. Law. river, Sand bay and Sodus bay. Stillhere to tell the stories.
hinkydo
-
yes broke throw twice . friends twice this year
-
Not yet, and hope I never experience it! @)
-
up to my knee once in 30 fow.....the ice was 20" thick....a pressure crack had opened up a foot wide and skimmed over with a dusting of snow on top....was more pissed off than scared.....none the less it ruined my day
-
I went in up to my chest on a boat launch. The wind kicked up and the water on this end of Lake Erie rose and the snow on the edges turned to slush and it just swallowed me up. Luckily it was only 5' deep 'cause it was a tough go climbing out.
-
Twice! Once ice fishing, which was on about 12" of ice and found a thin spot. Fell in to my waist, caught myself with hands and laid on my stomach. I was able to get out by myself.
The second time on generally 4" of ice and again, a thin spot. I was trapping for beaver and fell through, with only an elbow and my head above the ice! Lucky a friend wanted to tag along. He was able to reach me with a tree branch and I was able to climb out.
It was a while for me to get back on the ice. I didn,t want strike three! After finding IS, with a the information on Ice Safety the odds are now on my side.
Safety First and no ice is safe ice!

2 times...
Once on Oneida about 30 years ago on a snowmobile. Late ice and the shoreline went to mush/gone. We were out 50-75 yards, didnt realize it was only 4 ft deep till someone noticed the tip of the windshiled sticking up. Lots of sleds and people went in that day. It was mid week and everyone was talking about fishing saturday...
And Sandy Pond about 25 yrs ago. That was much scarrier as we were out over 10-12 fow. Warm march day and the ice went to mush, it was like walking on a sponge. Think there was 13 of us out there athat day and 8 or 9 got wet. Hellicopter showed up as we all got off. Again, we were pounding fish and every on was talking about fishing that comming weekend again....
Things happen but dont plan on it again...
-
I have broken through, but I have never been in fear. It's always been close to shore and always ended up a funny story thankfully.
My best one:
I was fishing one of my favorite honey holes at late ice when I was in my early 20's. One of those places I felt WAY too comfortable for my own good. We needed 8' planks to get on. Can you tell I was asking for it? The gills were on fire and I piled up. When I made my way back to the shore where the big gap was. I could watch bluegills and pumkinseeds dart in and attack a school of shiners. I turn to my buddy, "Dude, watch this. Betcha I can catch one of those bad boys with my hands." I layed down on my stomach and scooted to the edge of the ice. My timing was perfect and I pinned a big gill against a rock with my first swipe. Just as I did it. Crrraaaaccckkkk. I go in 3 fow while laying on my belly. I STILL came up with that darn fish! I was so flippin' proud of myself the cold wet clothes didn't bother me.
I rode home in my tighty whiteys with heat cranking and Ryan starring out the passenger window the whole way home.
It'll be a while before I go sharing that stry with my little one's. ;D
-
We didn't actually go in but had a scary experience on the Missouri River in South Dakota. We were fishing for walleyes about 10 miles below Ft. Thompson Dam on lake Francis Case. We were pounding the walleyes n saugers. The ice was 18 to 20 inches thick and we were out on it in my wife's brand new car. We didn't notice but while we were fishing they had started releasing water from the dam so when we drove back to the boat launch we were greeted with 50 feet of open water beetween us and shore. My buddy's wanted to wade in but I said if I can't get this car off the ice there is no need for me to go home, ever. One of my friends said he would get it off and got about a quarter mile run and hit that open water sofast that it half hydroplane across it. There was water and mud flying everywhere. I washed her car and never mentioned it to my wife. About 5 years later after too many years one of my friends spilled the beans to my wife. Now I hear about it every time I go ice fishing but it is never in her car. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
never when fishing but went through plenty of times trapping beaver
-
yes
-
went through well over my head, and couldn't get back out cause the ice kept breaking...in no time i was exhausted...luckily fishingking was there and pulled me out, saved my life. I learned my lesson and spud everywhere now
-
When I was about 8, my younger brother and I fell through over our head but it wasn't on a body of water. My parents were looking at houses for a potential move and one house was left half built and we went to check it out in the middle of February. As my parents looked over the house and property my brother and I found what we thought was a frozen puddle and start jumping on it to specifically break the ice. When the ice finally broke we fell into what we learned to be a fuel storage tank pit that was left open. It was deep enough to swallow both of us up and our parents fished us out. Very odd experience but only one having falling all the way through.
In a related breaking through the ice under dangerous conditions, see my post here: http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=145135.20
-
Started Ice fishing with my Father at the age of 5 ( Now 54 ), on Titicus for slob Whites. I have yet to fall in, and have no plans on doing so, thank you ;D
-
Been in to my knees late season on shore ice. Been in spots wondering if I was goin in but stayed dry so far. Hoping with the way it is now I am not back on here in a few days changing this. Good luck and Stay Dry.
-
went through well over my head, and couldn't get back out cause the ice kept breaking...in no time i was exhausted...luckily fishingking was there and pulled me out, saved my life. I learned my lesson and spud everywhere now
This is a scary story. Imagine falling in but can't find your way up again. That's gotta be the worst case scenario... Glad you're alright!
-
I had gone through once where the coast guard cut a hole for practice on Durand lake . was froze over and didn't see it til I was wet.lol
-
Last March, took one step out onto the ice on Otisco and fell up to my waist, one of the scariest feelings I've ever had. Stupid move on my part, could see there was a little play on the ice when I took my first step, but I was thinking not me, famous last words... :o :o
-
Not through but did manage to find a snow covered hole at NFTA Small Boat harbor in 2008. Whole leg was wet, kept fishing @)
-
Never fallen through. :)
-
fell through when i was young, screwing around on a pond. walked 2 1/2 blocks home in 10 degree weather, and was frozen solid by the time i got home. Mom put me in the shower to get my clothes off!
-
I went through many times when I was young. I went through mostly on beaver ponds and such hunting and fishing and of course screwing around. Sometimes it was just a boot and on a couple of occasions up to my armpits! Back in the day I always wore wool so even though I froze at first once I got to moving to get home I warmed up a little. Knowing now what I went through back then makes me more aware. I carry a good long rope at all times just in case.
-
Ok, I let RG decide if these qualify ?? Once at the north west end of Honeoye Lake chasing two dogs that had killed a deer. (Damn gas pockets), three times on RG's Queen of the Finger Lakes (Keuka), twice rescuing deer and another rescuing a dog. Also, several times beaver trapping. I know RG, not to bright am I !! JTP
-
to the hips a couple times, over my head never
-
yes, on the Erie Canal when i was in my early 20's. luckily someone found me after 45 min and brought me to the hospital. body temp was 92*F. makes you look at life in a different way. what could of been
-
No I have never fallen in and hopefully never do. I have been with friends on 3 different occasions where they have fallen through, everyone got out ok and it made me much more cautious.
-
I voted no. Usually stuff like this bites me in the butt. :o
-
Does stepping in your own hole count? long story short we had 5 shanties butted up together and when time came to take them down it was dark. Next I know I'm doing a semi vertical split with one leg in the lake. Buddies said that was the biggest tip-up they'd seen!
-

Does that include spud retrieval Tom ;D

-
The only time i personally have, the amish had cut a large hole in the ice the day before and before i saw it i was in to my waist, on South Sandy Pond a few years back.
-
Wow it's 50/50 right now! Earlier I was thinking I might be one of the few that hasn't gone through
-
i fell through 2 years ago, trying to cross a pressure ridge in the spring, the crack was tight in the morning coming off the ice had softened up and just gave out under my feet,a buddy was there and had me pulled out before i knew i was in the lake
-
50/50 trend...very interesting.
RG
-
coming off oneida lake years ago on a fourwheeler when three feet of ice was snowconeing on a 65 degree day the shoreline went away, only about three feet of water
-
Nope...and I hope I never do.
Stay Safe!
Cheers,
Ice Beard
-
I have never gone through but, i'm only 15 so I'm sure my time will come. ;) I did however, have a "wet" experience. I was 10 years old and was out for the first time ice fishing. I was so focused on drilling a hole out. It took me about an hour cause I was ten and using a dull auger. After I finally cut the hole i went back to our shanty to get a tip-up. I forgot where I drilled the hole and the next thing I knew I had one leg completely submerged. ;D
-
Nope, not yet and don't have any plans too.
Always send the heavier person out first to check the ice. ;)
Same here BTW what do you weigh? I'm looking for fishing buddy.
All kidding aside a little concerning the poll is 50/50 those aren't great oddsfor staying dry.
Stay safe
-
Once is enough, now its always caution, and I always where Artic Armor Suit and carry Ice Picks
-
I always used to fish crazy early ice like early- mid December ice. Fell through in 4 FOW on the way back to the truck on the same path I went out on. Not a nice experience. I'm a little older and wiser now.
-
went thru all the way in my teens. the one time fishin i stepped off a dock that had snow piled up against it. no ice under the snow insulation. one long step and it was 4" thick. only one leg went thru that day.
-
(http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/roundlakeNY/2011-2012%20Ice%20fishing%20Season/320954_2350134192314_1218872614_2910949_8226195_n.jpg)
Yup twice. The one above I was alone on round lake just hit a thin spot. Then put the dirtbike almost in down at Wagner's pond
-
I voted yes.
I had a stretch of younger, dumber years that I fished late ice for big, fat, egg-laiden Northern Pike. Four times in a five year span I fished late enough into the spring until I broke through. Then I found my wife, and that wasn't part of her plan... ;)
-
No, been fishing for 65 years since I was 4. Part being careful as I get older and part luck back in my teens and twenties.
-
yes, was standing too close to a big buddy who started to go down.... guess who he pulled in with him?
Luckily we were only in 4 ft of water, but i dont plan to get wet again. 4" or bust for me.
-
had my right leg go through on the Hudson river up to my crotch. hurt and it makes your heart skip a beat. had a man on lake George walking up to me and didn't step over a 2 foot open pressure crack went down quick .fully under he was out by the time i got to him . stood up n said don't step there. went out to his shanty and hollered an hour later n showed me a 28 inch salmon. kudos sir... kudos.
-
Yes just once. Went in waist deep. Not a pleasant feeling but fished the rest of the day ;D
-
Was not paying attention and was backing up and fell through a hole someone must have spudded.
-
Fell in at Canadaraga a few years back going out from the boat launch. Up to my arms. Fishing alone got out (obviously). Since then I've been very careful. Used to fish on 2 inches of clear ice it was cool you could see the fish real good. Gotten much wiser in my old age it's a frightening experience and no fish is worth it. Fat, drunk, dead and stupid is no way to go through life!
-
Havent fallen through, however sent 1 foot/leg through a snow covered 10" hole someone fished the day before
-
Up to my waist crossing 10" of heaved ice, didn't realize how cold I was until I took a hot shower.
-
5 times--not looking forward to 6.
Pulled two guys out of the water on other occasions too.
Wear a float suit!!
Bud
-
I went in trying to get minnows years ago before certified bait .
there was a spring open water over a bank, snow was
frozen from a rain storm I look over bank to see minnows & I slip
& slide down bank out on ice next to open water ...I lay on my stomach
& try to craw back to shore. when I got close I broke through the ice .
had to take my fist to beat snow on bank to get a grip .My buddy came
with the minnow trap & threw me the rope & pull me up the bank...
by the time I got to truck cloths were frozen solid .... be safe out there...
-
I went in at Erieville Res about 10 years ago, we had been drilling threw 18''s of hard and soft ice. We were on our way off and I found a gas hole, went in as far as my neck. Next thing I heard was HEY BUCKEYHEAD YOU OK!! so thats been my handle since then.
-
i have fallen through before .....its not fun ...my best advice is to keep an extra pair of clothes with you and keep a cell phone with you :-\
-
In 50 plus years ice fishing, had 4 wet times.First time stepped in a huge spud hole covered in 5 inches of fresh snow, one leg wet up to you know what, second time last day out and all day 1-2 inches of rain, the flood controll Shenengo reservoir was rising all day 15 feet of open water to shore, someone brought a extension latter but got wet up to my waist, same thing again pushed one more day and fell through waist deep coming off at Moraine. The last time same thing (had to go one more time) my go to lake, after just crushing crappie all day, came off in 60 degree weather,10 foot from shore stepped over a stress crack and up to my waist. 3 out of 4 could have been avoided, but you got to go ONE MORE TIME!
-
went through up to my waist a couple of times but never been in over my head, and I don't intend to either... knock on wood
-
Been through multiple times and hopefully no more
First time I took my lady out. Yup up to my nipples. She was impressed on how I found the unsafe ice for her not to walk on
-
Been through multiple times and hopefully no more
First time I took my lady out. Yup up to my nipples. She was impressed on how I found the unsafe ice for her not to walk on
and they say chivalry is dead.
-
Do I get to vote more than once if I fell in more than once?
-
does stepping in old 10" holes covered in fresh snow count? i've done that a few times one time they were all over the area we were fishing and i found at least a half dozen of them the hard way. I had one time after a rain the ice blew away from shore and opened some big cracks 4 inches of snow on top completely hid it (conesus lake) 18inches of ice took a step and was up to my neck in 20 foot of water tried to crawl out and my first attempt was along the crack so i couldnt find a handle. got out got real cold so buddy and i packed up went to north end warmed up in the car went back out for a couple more hours and got a nice pike out of the deal. found a large triangle hole covered in snow on 5 inches of ice one year two only got a leg wet that time still dont know where the hell that hole came from
-
once in 25 years, rotten pond ice, went in up to my waist caught myself with the spud and slid out. oh and i knew better than to be on that ice- you always know better!
-
Twice, in the late 80’s, early 90’s ... been luckier (maybe smarter) since then!
-
Never fallen through, don't want to again.
-
:cookoo:Hope I never dooo carry picks !
-
Went in up to my armpits last year over 30 ft of water. It scared the crap out of me. I bought a striker suit the next day. I can't risk it with small kids . No ice is 100% safe faster that to me.
-
No Sir.
-
I am not even going to tell you how many times... ;)
I will point out a few facts.
Notice that more than half the people in this poll have had a WET experience or two...
And this poll is only the ice fishermen on the internet on this site. There are more ice fishermen that DO NOT USE THE INTERNET, than those that do.
Those that ice fish MORE , have a better chance of falling through.
Those that think that waiting for thicker ice means it is safe for them, ARE FOOLING THEMSELVES. Thicker ice will lessen your chance of finding a thin spot..but I have gone through on 22 inches of ice, with a foot of snow on top! (one bad hidden spot, I found it)
NO ICE IS ABSOLUTELY SAFE.
Wish I had ice picks when beaver trapping as a kid...but we would cut a long pole and carry it to help push back up. REALLY WISH THERE WERE FLOAT SUITS BACK THEN.
Float suits work, AND SAVE LIVES.
In my opinion, every ice fisherman should invest in one of these suits, before they buy a fishfinder, auger, 4 wheeler, snowmobile, shanty, $100's and $100's of jigs and poles, heaters, jetsleds, GPS's and any/all other gear that I see everyone with, that doesn't have a float suit.. ::) :cookoo: :cookoo: :cookoo:
SAFETY FIRST
What are you all thinking? >:(
-
Fell through once on a foot if ice over 40 feet of water. Somebody had neglected to mark out where their bait trap/shanty hole or whatever had been. Complete whiteout conditions. Luckily I had been carrying my hand auger at full length because both the handle and blades caught opposite sides of the hole. It was so cold that day that my glove had frozen to the shaft... No doubt that I was saved that day by that cold weather and my lazer auger. I pulled myself up onto the ice legs first. It was terrifying having to put my head under that water and cling to the auger to get out of the lake. I have no idea how I was able to get out of that, I was in full wool and had steel-toe boots on. My clothes must have weighed at least as much as me by the time I was out of the water.
Just goes to show that no ice is safe ice... Especially if there are irresponsible anglers ahead of you.
-
Fell thru about 4 years ago-at night in just over 5 ft of water-30 ft from shore in Boyd's corners reservoir, worst part was that I was by myself and had to go back for my gear
-
Been through twice as a kid. Once to my waist and once complete. Slow learner but three times your out. So I look for signs all the time now. Education is key. Learn what to do if you go through and learn what to have. Better to have stuff and not use it than wish you did
-
I have gone through with just one leg and quite surprised how fast you go down. Its enough to wake you up and rethink weather its worth being out therein late ice conditions.
-
Love all the stories! You really can't be safe enough when traveling onto any frozen body of water..I've never had "wet boots" and I hope I never do , and if I do I hope I'm lucky enough to be able to share the story too!!
-
Yep two times, once at Sodus and at Canandaigua. The time at Sodus I let two fat guys go first they cracked the ice and I fell threw.
auger
-
Never fallen thru
-
As stated earlier havent fell thru in 50 yrs and I would say I fish more than the average guy, at least 6 days a week morning and evening!! Luck has nothing to do with it, just use your head.
-
a few
-
Does it count if you willingly step off the ice, into butt deep water, take a 20' strole and step back up onto shore? If so then I and at least 30 other guys did that on Oneida last spring ;D .Boy the fat lady sang that day :o :o :o ;D .
-
I am 51 and have fallen through three times since I was 12. Two years ago on Chautauqua. I have an idi arctic armor suit now
-
O'BOY, have I,started in 1946 last time was in 2002 shoreline at res.AND I SPUD [most times]THIS IS THE KEY, SPUDDING
MUST BE ALL THE TIME,or swim,
;D ;D ;D
RAT
-
Yes i have, twice. Both times it was late season trying to get off the ice in Lake George. Should have known better then to go where we did. Thank god it was half way warm and not to far from shore, still 10-15' of water. That's why it's important to fish with good people, the ones that will help you god forbid you need it. That's why the F A T (fish assault team) boys stick together.
-
went thru eel bay a few years ago was late season should of known better, but the perch were biting ,up to my waist before i knew what happened and wasn't touching bottom, did the doggie paddle as fast as i could and rolled myself back on the ice, weird thing is it took a while before the cold water finally seeped though my clothing but man when it did was it ever cold major shrinkage time lol lucky we were staying at the cabins layed in the shower for a hour ,now i,m a little bit smarter always use a good spud and have a suit that floats

Closest I came was on Lake Champlain a few year back at the Ti ferry where we were on 6"+ of ice. The wind came up and broke it loose, I would have either ended up in the drink or in VT if I didn't make/ take the 3 foot jump between the slab I was on and the one still locked to shore. After we got to shore my buddy and I watched it just float away.

I fell thru once but not while fishing if that counts. About 6 years ago while deer hunting a new property I broke thru on a beaver dam completely submerged over my head. I remember the feeling like it was yesterday. I got back out relatively easy but would never want ti feel that rush of ice cold water filling my cloths and boots again

i am as die hard as they come, use to work 3rd shift and considered it a sin not to get out at least 5 times a week.i fish all over NEPA, and NY ,onieda, sandy, sodus, finger lakes, indian river lakes, bays along the SL and have gone through at shore more times than i care to admit. worst i ever went through was on 14in warmed up and rained and old drill holes opened up to 6ft diameter refroze with a in of ice and a dusting of snow whole lake looked the same was out fishing for 2 hr moving my tip-ups around took a diff path and went through 20 fow. don't take a chance always have your bar you never know

Been baptized a few times lol

How do you know the season is over until you fall in? ;)
-
Yes it is a 50/50 trend. But...
What if we had a tally of how many ice outings combined in this thread?
I'm 35 and have a good chunk of ice time under my belt. I'm sure there are plenty of dudes that have triple the ice time that I have.
-
Never fallen through, don't want to again.

Interesting. Sounds like an internal struggle ;)
-
seems to be a lot of heavy people or unsafe people on unsafe ice - what the heck is going on ?
-
a good thing to note is how many have gone thru thick ice due to a bad spot or a gas pocket of snow hiding something (snow always sucks) its always good to have others in earshot and keep your eyes open.
-
went in on late ice . ran over to help two guys that had to be in there 80's . it sucked
-
I went through a soft spot once to my waist, but caught myself from going completely under. This was in a main entry point to lake where probably 20 guys had already walked that day. It was getting warm out and ice was melting, but I still felt like the fatboy on the ice for being the one to go through...........
-
been there done that

30+ years on the ice...the last 20 years of that I have been on ice 30-60 days a year...

The more time you spend on ice, the more you realize THERE IS NO SAFE ICE. ;)
It is up to YOU to be safe , while on ice. @)

twice. once through a spearhole and once near shore
-
Twice..playing hockey. One time totally under. One of the scariest things. When ice fishing we carry throw lines and wear our safety spikes.
-
Never have gotten wet, and sure don't plan on it. I use to go ice fishing alot with my dad, but didn't really go at all for 15 yrs. This winter been hitting it hard. Forgot how "good" it feels to have ice cracking under you when ur over 25 ft of water. Yester we had 5-6 guys over 200 lbs on ice at one point. There was 5-7 inches of ice. A couple times I'm sure my heart skipped a beat. Really gonna get a floating suit by next winter. Defintately could be the differnece between life or death for you or others. Just checked out the AA Plus suit and it says they have enough bouyancy for you plus 2 others. Sounds like a life saver...Stay safe!

Yes, i did have the experiance of falling through thanks to the old timer "SILVER SPRINGS BILL" ...he drilled 4 10"holes in the walkway out of Macks on Silver Lake..not sure why someone would drill a spot out that big in a walkway but whatever i guess it gave me this story to share lol :%$#!:
-
No I haven't and I hope I never do. I do carry spikes and a throw rope just in case but, I hope never to have to use them.
-
Yes, Twice and the cold sure makes you move fast to get out!! Once on Lake Erie and once on Chautauqua.

Yes, fell through the ice on Otter Lake in the early 80's was still a greenhorn to the ice. ???
