A Frosty Friday
« on: Dec 30, 2005, 03:19 PM »
The last 3 days have sure been foggy. Each day the hoar frost gets thicker. It is now almost an inch long, forming only on the west side of the branches and trees, looks like evergreen needles. There is hardly a breath of wind. :)

The wildlife has been enjoying our unusually mild temps and calm days. This is a photo of my bird feeder, with several chickadees enjoying an afternoon snack. :D

They are so active, hard to get a still photo. ::)

Thanks guys, the frost is just starting to blow off the trees today. :-[ toobad to see it go, when it is sunny out you need the sunglases on. 8)
I love to feed the birds, it's nice to help out the little guys that stay with all year long. It's amazing how those tiny little bodies stay warm when it's -45 deg C out.
I have sunflowers and canola in my feeder so most attract chickadees, house sparrows, darkeyed juncos, redpoles and the squirrel. Man can they eat, I fill it up the feeder every other day. ::)

Nice dee pic.  I'm hoping to upgrade digicams this spring before the baby comes, so I'd like to get some shots in the backyard.

I've got 2 suet feeders, 2 peanut feeders, 3 full of black oil sunflower, and one with three tubes that has niger, mix, and sunflower.  Luckily, the feed store is right around the corner, and you get 25 pounds for free with every 500 pounds you buy in their feed club.  Today I had three different woodpecker species on the same suet feeder in less than 3 minutes.  First a flicker, then a red-bellied chased him off.  Right after that, one of the hairies was on it.

Good deal Chucker, have you ever had a pileated woodpecker visit your feeders? I have seen a few of them around hear but they don't seem to want to stop for a bite.
They are one big woodpecker. :o

Not yet... The large suet feeder with the tail platform for woodpeckers went up in late fall.  Come to think of it, I don't think I've heard a pileated at the hosue since we moved in last May.  I have seen a pair along the creek less than a mile upstream though.
