Reels for lake trout jigging?
« on: Dec 08, 2015, 12:59 AM »
Hey guys -

I jig lakers in deep water up to 160' and have trouble finding a reel that will be light enough to remain comfortable to jig all day.  I've been flirting with switching over to a baitcast reel.

What would you recommend?  The 2000-series reels I have are almost out of line by the time I send down the lure to 150' with braid.

If you are going to jig that deep I would go with the round style baitcaster. Those reals hold more line than your conventional casting baitcasters. A lot of people recommend the Abu Garcia.

I use round ABU bait casters.
5000 and 6000 series reels.

How big of a line and how much line?  If you're almost running out of line, I'm assuming that you aren't getting about 100 yards of line onto the spool.

I use round ABU bait casters.
5000 and 6000 series reels.

X2 on these, great reels for a wide range of applications.  Just be sure they have a low temperature friendly lube in them.

As far as line, I find 10 lb braid is plenty for the size range of fish I see fishing in ME, but you might want heavier if you fish waters with bigger fish.  I tried the suffix ice fuse last year and seems great so far, much less freezing than standard braid.
