Grass perch/Jack Perch
« on: Jan 05, 2006, 09:26 AM »
Is there a genetic difference between what a lot of guys refer to as "Grass Perch " and "Jack Perch", or is a Grass Perch just a small Jack?

A lot of the Old Timers in the WNY area always referred to small yellow perch as Grass perch and the larger Yellow Perch as Jack Perch. My guess is that it is a regional thing and they are one in the same. Just wondering.

A jack perch is an open water fish they live in very deep water they can reach to a size of 20 inches. A grass perch lives in a shallow weedy environment. They are small and have a greenish color.

They're the same damn fish. You can catch jack perch in 5 feet of water, and small (grass) perch, in 55 feet. A grass perch is just a name for small yellow perch, and a relatively rarely used name at that. Jack perch is a name used to describe large yellow perch.

Several of the posts are right on the money, yellow perch are the same, for years I heard the term "grass perch", they are the 2 year to about five year olds and are generally found in the weeds during the summer. When a perch reaches about 6 to 10 years old and it's weight generally passes a pound then it's common for people to call them "Jack" perch. The term has been used for years on Seneca Lake, Roy Japp (Marina Owner) called them "Elephant" perch. Greart article that Otis describes in In-Fisherman, one of the best perch articles that I have read in years. Perch are one on the most prolific fish species that swim and in smaller waters, without the predator fish they will stunt as do bluegills in ponds.

I'm pretty sure slob female perch are the ones that just spawn year after year, won't work, and just live off of the minnow support.
