Keeping Drinking Water From Freezing
« on: Mar 18, 2019, 02:32 PM »
Does anyone have trouble keeping their drinking water from freezing while out on the lake? If not, how do you keep your water from freezing? I realize this might be a dull question for most of you; however, I'm trying to gather research for a project, so any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Yes, that's why most of us take beer.  Much lower freezing point.  :woot:

I use a small cooler to keep bait, beer, etc from freezing. It works well.

Good old Thermos brand beverage bottle.  Water in it has never frozen.

If your talking about a water bottle, just place it between the canvas and top pole of your shanty,
the heat from your heater rises and at times the sun provides plenty of heat to keep from freezing as well
will thaw partially frozen bottle

There a tons of water bottles out there that have insulated walls that keep beverages hot and/or cold.  Allows water to stay almost at whatever temp it started the day at.  I've got a $15 bottle from Walmart that keeps water ice cold for days in the summer and keeps my water from freezing on the ice.

Usually i just dip a cup in my hole and drink from the lake. 95% of our lakes here are better than my tap water! When I can't do that I have a Coleman water jug that's insulated, or keep a water bottle in an inside coat pocket

If you're not careful or smart about it, yes you can. Wouldn't recommend it in your area (southern lake Erie by your profile) but up here on Lake Superior we have some of the purest, cleanest water on earth. No pollution, and when you're 8km from shore, there is little to no risk of giardia or other pathogens. Back lakes around here are similar with no pollution and drinking from the middle of the lake. Most pathogens in water are from pollution or animal droppings by shore. Drinking from the middle of a clean natural lake has minimal risk. It's common practice around here since our water is so clean. Especially on our larger lakes or lake teout lakes, i know more people who carry a metal cup than pack in water. like I said though, this can't be done in every lake.

We fish Canadian Shield lakes.....most are o.k.

If they have Lake Trout in them 100%, unless a community or mine tailings nearby.

Clean and pure water....all year around.

How do you have frozen water in a heated hut?  Even frozen water during the trip out on the ice.  You must be traveling quit a few miles if your water freezes while en-route on the ice to your fishing spot.

Highly unlikely. Can't be done everywhere, but lakes around here are exceptionally pure and clean. Just because you can't do it in your area doesn't mean I can't safely drink the lake water here.  I would rather drink my lake water on a trout lake 40km from the nearest house than tap water in most cities. Its not an uncommon practice here and nobody gets sick drinking from the middle of the lake.

Yeti. One with hot chocolate, and another with water. The chocolate usually stays hot all day and the water never freezes.
