Fishing terminology & lingo
« on: Jan 10, 2005, 11:36 AM »
I'm just curious if anyone has any fishing lingo that not a lot of people know about? I know that a laker is a lake trout or a char, and I know that burbot is a ling cod. When my friend catch a small ling we refer to it as not worthy, , , We still like catching them but it's simpley NOT WORTHY! We are also inserch of the elusive MONSTER. We Know he's out ther eluding our every move. I'll hunt hin down and mount him so that everyone knows that he exists. Please let me know of any lingo you like using.

Heh whiskey. I know what you mean. I've heard small fish being referred to as "dinks". Not here in BC though. But if you surf on some american sites it is mentioned alot. You hear lots of weird terms out there especially on ice. Take yesterday for instance, I heard the word "finnindian"  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:  Careful what you say about mounting fish on this site as kids maybe seeing what you type. We have to keep this clean. Who knows, a new word like finnimounter might be in our lingo then. Finnimounter... kind of sounds like an electric motor or something. ;D

Terry I've been checking out some new sight and you are in some of them. Fishfinder.com
The topic everyone was talking about was how ugly Burbot is? ? ? ? This makes me feel kinda weird because I like the camo colored beautifull looking fish. I realy think that they are awesome looking. The mossy oak pattern looks cool. If I was a fish I would like to be a burbot.

I Borrowed this info from Cider at fishfinder.com Some COOL Info.
Burbot - Lota lota  scientific name is derived from the old French "la Lotte" meaning codfish.

Common slang terms - Ling, Eelpout, Loche, Freshwater Cod, Maria, Methy, Lush, Lawyer, American burbot, Freshwater Codfish, Mud Blower,  Dogfish, Freshwater Crusk, Gudgeon, Lingcod, Mother Eel, Spineless Catfish

And yes, a dogfish is also a bowfin.  These are slang names not proper names.

The second picture was the same thing.

And the third picture made up for everything, , , Fishnutz was a very happy camper! ! ! !!
These pictures always make me lough!

Thanks for the pics Whisk! They turned out awesome( at least I don't look like an axe murderer >:D). This weekend is looking pretty dismal for fishing,I am going to be working sat. and sun. More than likely they will be long shifts. We should try to get out for an evening fish if I can get out of work at a decent hour. Pitbell, you up DOG? 8) Let me know.

Take chains if you have them. The atv will be good on the ice. I'd leave the snowmachine at home. Lots of slush on surface, so will be a struggle. Good luck.

My bro and I have always referred to any fish unworthy of a photo as a pinner.  Walter is the elusive big one, unless of course you are fishing the Stellako and trying to rise Mr. Green.  Pitbell I am sure has tried many times to do this, but I know of nobody who has ever connected with Mr. Green, hiding under that big tree on the south bank...

Pitbell made a funny face when a fish wiggled during a pic. Fishnutz & Whiskey made a funny face as to make pitbell feel better. Fishnutz & Whiskey are nice guys and don't want pitbell feeling bad for his goofy pic.

Just a little hint whiskey. Downsize your pics more. That way you get more space and more people get to view. Also we dont see all those red X's. I hope you are using photobucket and not sharemation.
