Walleye in central Ia
« on: Feb 27, 2015, 03:58 PM »
I have never walleye fished through the ice or anywhere in central Iowa for that matter. Don't want a big road trip but just thought I'd see if i could get any recommendations as far as where my best chance to get on a few. Located in Indianola and would like to keep halfway close <1 hr drive. Wanting to go 2/28 afternoon through evening. Thinking about big creek but 12 mile isn't out of the question. I even contemplated going to Easter Lake as I know there are a few in there but hard to come by. Just thought I'd see what anyone would recommend. Thanks!

you won't catch a keeper at big creek, don't waste your time.
get your big rod out and hit the river, it's really the only decent change imho in central iowa.
I've never, in all my years of ice fishing central iowa, caught a keeper walleye through the ice. only in mn/sd have I done so.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear but thanks for the reply. I'd like to go north somewhere to catch some but already taken 2 trips this year and it's just not gonna happen again till next year. Just kinda wanted to try something different.

I haven't fished either of these lakes, but I hear from guys I trust that 3 mile and 12 mile have walleyes that can be caught through the ice. I keep planning on trying them both.........but something always comes up

they are there, for sure. I've never got one through the ice though, at least nothing I would even consider edible size.
the one spot I know of in the past at 12 mile has been on sketchy ice all year from geese so I never tried it.
