I can't create an avatar

I have been unable to post an avatar on my profile, despite following all the suggestions in the thread in the Help and FAQ area which was hopefully but incorrectly labeled "Photobucket avatar problem solved".  Why is it so difficult to post an avatar?  Any suggestions?

I routinely post pictures on forums from Photobucket, and I inserted the img code of my avatar picture from Photobucket into my profile in the normal manner.  The problem is that when I save my revised profile, the forum deletes my avatar picture.

1) your original pic is probably too large
2) use imgur for your image host.
