Anybody interested next year of having a derby for all of us shanty nuts? We could start it off here in central Vt. and expand every year to a new location in Vt. We could possibly get Ice Shanty .Com to sponsor something and have a great barbeque for us. One day tournament that hopefully doesn't interfere with another , if it does majority rules for that year. Any thoughts , sounds fun and a beginning! Now is the time to think about it. Maybe just trophys would be a start , then work our way up to a bigger prize.
-
I think thats the best idea i have heard today.
-
Sorry, but I think there are too many derbies already. you will find it hard to find a weekend when there isn't one already scheduled
-
You guys could set up a IS gathering. I'd be more than happy to sticky the thread to the top of the VT board.
-
I like the idea of having something that doesn't reqiure an entry fee and does not award cash or prizes,,,,the frostbite fleet boys on LC do this in the fall and have a cookout after a 4 hour fishing "derby" ... there are no prizes and no money involved,,,but....there is a nice trophy that goes to the winner who returns it next year where it goes to the new winner. I beleive they start at dawn and stop at 1:PM where everone meets at a pre-determined location and has a cookout,,All food is donated by the people fishing
-
I think this is an awesome idea. I would go just so I can meet all you guys that enjoy ice fishing as much as me. I would go if it was just a gathering of friends or if set up as a derby. A cook out at the end of the day sounds good too
I would definetly chip in for for food and drinks.
Ice hook let me know. If you need help next year
-
How about just a day that we plan early in the season to all meet at a desired area and fish.
Does not need to be a derby.

Exactly- A meet-up somewhere that locks up early and has fish to catch!
-
Gathering with a cookout and meeting shanty members is looking good! Rotating trophy sounds great too. Shanty flags will fly in the breeze while we have a great time!
-
Sounds good to me.
-
Sounds like a bunch of kids getting a new playground.I LOVE IT<count me in.I met about 5 guys this year on here and that was great. It would be awesome to meet a bunch of people from here.
-
Count me in, sounds fun. I second the non-derby but rotating trophy sentiment. Rotating trophies are fun. Definitely something to consider.
-
So far looking good! We will figure this out on a starter lake in central Vt. and early ice or late ice. With everybodies imput we can make it happen , we have all summer . Starter lake? Bomoseen at Green Dump-State Park? Any ideas? Then we can choose northern Vt.-southern VT. for season 2 !
-
I went all winter without fishing Bomoseen, that'd work for me. The first time I ever visited Vermont I camped there. I've been living here almost 3 years now and haven't gone back. Plenty of time to mull it over, but a great idea.
-
Also fyi NH is having there gathering March 9th at Alton BAY and NY is having theirs also on March 9th at million dollar beach ! Did not realize they were already doing this! Check out IS home page , listed on the board on the left.
-
I have attended the frostbite fleet shootout(that's what they call it)and it went from 10 boats to about 30 in just a couple of years. It's important to lock up a place to have the cookout ahead of time, you don't need a permit to have a tournament if there is no money involved , but it is recommended to get permission to have a cookout even if it is just a question of being ethical. For example ,if you have it at the green dump then the state of Vt. should be politely asked permission.
-
I'm all for doing it right, getting permission etc. I also love to cook and drink good beer so this could be a good time. To avoid having it fall apart or get disorganized while everyone is doing their thing over the summer I say we delegate a couple of folks to organize, get any necessary permission and set up a pot luck sign up to avoid a dozen venison stews....
-
I love this idea. No money just a trophy. I would like to suggest three other things. Catch and release, a youth trophy, and another trophy for best "ice food".
-
Count me in. Love the lets just get together idea & revolving trophie.
-
+1 I am totally down for some Bomo fishing and meeting a bunch of the folks on here. A friend of mine runs Kehoe conservation camp right there, he may have some good insight on a place for a gathering after a day of fishing.
-
Like i said before you can count me in. i meet several people this year from the forum and you all seem to be very nice people who love to ice fish
Ice hook i would suggest doing something before or after the derbies that are going on in February, depend on the ice conditions of coarse.
Ice hook if you need help with planing or food or whatever . i will do what i can to help you out .

Great ideas. Catch and release or harvest could be an option.

Yes , bigwiggle I will let you know. Have an Idea on a revolving trophy and making of a ice shanty sign for the get togethers. I will post with more info. Won't slide under the bus on this one. Once it happens it will be a good thing for all of us I think. Meeting shanty members and sharing ideas. Either before the derbys or after. Looking at 1st Sat. of March myself - but majority is a must. We will see. Thanks to all for letting this happen.

If you want something made out of wood let me know. Like the date so far as by then all the derbys have been run.

I'm gonna set this at the top of the Vermont board for you guys. This way it'll always be up there for you to plan for the next 9 months! ;D

Ice Hook
Are you still motivated to do this..hope so
PM me if you need anything done.
-
there are about 11 of us up north in the islands that are very interested in this
I too do the frostbite derby out of converse bay
I have never ice fished past mallets bay so I am looking forward to where you decide to go
would love to add another trophy to the 1st and 2nd place ones I got in the 2013 island derby
are you going to be targeting just the pike or is it gonna be the biggest fish
-
I would be interested. Preferably sometime in January befor the derbies start. Late ice you won't get me away from whatever pike spot I am fishing.
-
Count me in for sure! Cant wait to chill with everyone and drink BEER. Maybe we could have the drunkest angler trophy?? Just a thought lol
-
Never been to Bomo so it would be a good chance to learn a new lake and learn some tips from other guys.

-
I think I would go if there was a get together in VT- I'm from NY though so I can't gurantee anything. It sounds like an awesome idea!
-
I resemble that remark! ;D

I fished the frostbite derby this year on November 2. Out of Charlotte Vermont And that was a lot of fun and there was about 50 fisherman fishing in that derby. There was no entry free. Everyone brought food and drinks so there was a ton of food and there was a very nice trophy given to the biggest salmon. If we can set this up like the frostbite derby this would be a blast. I say we designate one fish for the trophy and the biggest fish of the day will take the trophy determined by a length and poundage. For example if you decide to fish lake bomo seen a good fish species to designate would be either brown trout or pike because those are the fish that are going to be the biggest coming out of the lake bomoseen.
-
Since when is Bomo in central VT? I THINK MOST WOULD AGREE THAT IS IN s. vt, not to sound picky...
-
Bomo is definitely not central vt, if anything is call it south western
-
Berlin Pond, now that would be considered Central VT.
-
That sounds like a great idea...I would love to come for that
-
ICE HOOK ANY NEW INFO ON THE 2014 get together?
-
Yes this just in, I heard that its mandatory for everyone to be over the Legal Limit before all Tip-Ups are in. If you have any further questions you can contact me. Thanks again BigCountry ;)
-
I'm a little confused with this thread. Do we have a weekend to circle on the calendar yet?
-
Count me in!

The most central body of water in the state is Chittenden Reservoir. It's within 5 miles of the same distance by road from Highgate Springs as it is to Pownal, and within 7 miles of center of the state East and West.
-
No, no no no no. Everyone knows VT ends at rt 302 and rt 15, the rest is the dmz between VT and that other place....a buffer zone if you will.

I think we should be thinking about a central location based on population density not geographically. I also think that we need to consider what the location can handle, as in, size of the lake, parking, accessibility, and the most important, a strong fish population.
-
Berlin Pond is a bad, bad, bad idea! The fight for an official access is still ongoing. The state is in the decision making process regarding Montpelier's petition to ban gas augers and all shanties. A few locals don't like to see different colored shanties on the ice. They want to keep it "pristine". Never mind the fact that there is only enough legal parking for about 8 trucks.
To me, the obvious place would be one of the bays with good parking on Champlain.

I agree with this. No matter where it is people are going to complain about distance so we should pick a large body of water with a lot of parking. Maybe somehow break it down to 3-5 bodies of water and take a group vote that our moderator could keep track of? Just a thought.

I think will is right....that was the same thing I was thinking travel is now a problem for me long as I can meet my ice shanty brothers I'm all for it whenever and where ever...
-
I would say, somewhere on Lake Champlain. I live in the NEK of Vermont. I would have to travel, at least 60 miles or more, but if I had a place to stay over night, after the get together, that would be fine. Trout season, starts, the second Saturday, in January. I am usually, fishing up here, on a local lake for that, with family and friends. ;D
-
I havent heard anything on this . IceHook are you sill planning on doing this?

I also agree with this. I think it should be a February event. ;) ;)
-
I'm thinkin BOMOSEEN all the way, Biggest Lake in Vermont and its fairly Central.
-
It's below rt 302. That area south of there is classified as Massachusetts. Doesn't count.
-
Bomo and/or several other neighboring waters which have nearby services, parking, quality fishery as evidence and an important consideration of acsess to a bait shop.
-
Bump ;D
-
"No, no no no no. Everyone knows VT ends at rt 302 and rt 15, the rest is the dmz between VT and that other place....a buffer zone if you will."
I find this funny..... North of 302 and you missed the short bus, and the memo, you where supposed to have been part of America Junior "that's Canada" but they did not want you, so us Vermonters are stuck with you.... and we make due.
If you are from above 302 and west of route 15, you are a Chittenden county flat lander..... that is where people move into so they can say they are Vermonters. That portion of the state was suppose to be part of New York, but again they did not want you, so the rest of us Vermonters are stuck with you, again we make due.
The southern boarder of Vermont is route 4 just above the Wood Stock town line. That sections can fall off the earth and no one would miss it.
Everyone one knows the eastern boundary of Vermont should have been the high water mark on the NH side. But us Vermonters make due there too, at least we can still fish it with a VT license.
Its all in good fun, I thought some of you might have found that funny.
-
So this is shaping up to be a March event? ;D
-
Sooooo next year???????
-
Did I miss the big shin-dig?? ??? ???
How was it?
-
I love the sounds of this i am down for any kind of gathering everyone i have met on here has been good people
