Camo_fish:  My daughter and I were perch fishing one afternoon and she hooked one (burbot) on 4lb test.  After a 5 min tug-of-war it came up through the hole (I estimated it to be ~ 24 inches long as it snapped the line and took off with our lure! ;D)  She (age 11 at the time) stated it was the ugliest fish she had ever seen!  We had a good fish story to tell that night over dinner.

It's an Antarctic cod. Commander John Bortniak (NOAA) took that photo in 1979. They studied these fish because they do not freeze even though human flesh would freeze in Antarctic sea temperatures.

Bob D, brilliant!  How the heck did you know what that was?  I knew it wasn't an ocean ling cod because it didn't have the teeth and spikey dorsal fin, but when I saw the open mouth I thought it was a great big doggie 'cause I've seen them in really light colors and I figured the light in the hole was distorting it.  The lack of a barbel should have tipped me off.

That fish is huge.  It looks like a grouper.  I didn't think those burbot got that big.  :o

I have caught Ling(Burbot) up to nine pounds here in northern Ontario.  But i do not know how to post pics on site

Yeah they get up to 26lbs  .
The biggest I've caught in southern Sask. is about 12 - 14 lbs. but I found they weren't as good eating as the 4 - 6 pounders.  Kind of chewy, know what I mean?
