Fluorcarbon to Fireline. What's your favorite Knot?
« on: Dec 26, 2009, 05:24 PM »
Hey,
Time to get the gear tuned up again.  I want to try using black Fireline Iceline as my main line on the tipdowns this year and of course tying a light tippet of fluorcarbon to that.  For those of you who have tried this, you know that some conventional mono to mono knots just slip apart.  >:(

I am looking for a knot that will hold these two lines together without creating a weakness.  Also, it would be nice to be able to tie this knot with cold, wet, stiff fingers!
Any suggestions?

Uni to Uni.  Can't slip apart, and not too hard to tie.

i usually tie a barrel swivel to the ice line with a palomar knot, then tie my fluoro tippet to the swivel using the fish-n-fool knot. if you're looking to tie the lines together use the albright knot.

I've always used a blood knot myself for line to line.

Another vote for the back to back uni knot here(uni-to-uni). I make sure to double up that fireline when joining to a thicker line. I add a drop of super glue to any knot if I have any on hand, more so with fireline after I learned the hard way. Heard the blood and the surgeon knots are very good for joining lines as well, so I wouldn't count either of those out! ;)

I always use a small swivel between the mainline and the tipet. It makes life easier without the twisting of line that winds up in snaggies on the ice.

Thanks for the comebacks.  Joining light mono to light fireline with the traditional blood knot sometimes just slips apart for some reason, even though this is the joining knot I most commonly use.  It gives me fits with this particular combination.  Mono to mono works fine, braided to braided works fine.  Mono to braided just slips apart when I go to pull the knot together.
I will try both the Albright Knot and the Back to Back Uni Knot today on the tipdowns.  It looks like these will join dissimilar lines well.  Should have remembered these from the days when I fly fished.  Thanks for the reminders.
For you all, here is another pretty nice link to a website that actually shows video demonstrations of how to tie various knots.  It supports many of your suggestions.

Good Luck out there.  Please pay attention to conditions.  Live to fish another day!

I found this summer after the bass would blow through 8 feet of leader like nothing, I had to be twisting the mono with my right hand and the braid with the left, if in reverse it would slip. Don't ask me why, but was tieing in 20 mph winds on the boat no problem. Oh with a blood knot!!

As a recovering fly fisherman I can recommend the"Wind Knot" I became very proficient at this knot and could tie it with little or no effort and can state absolutely it is almost impossible to untie ;D
