Check the reports and conditions forum..there won't be any ice on the king for at least a few weeks. Were going to need about a week of stupid cold weather, and no wind in order to lock her up..I'll give it a few weeks, and we should be fishing!

this may seem like a dumb question but why do you guys call lake george the king?  Is the fishing like no other?  I have never fished it but if its that good i may have to make the trip.

My understanding as to why the lake is called the king is because it is named for King George.

It's not actually the king, it's a queen lake, but who ever heard of a queen named george? so the king just sounds better... I prefer lake george myself, but what do I know, I only grew up here.

Somewhere on this site there is a good story explaining why LG is called the King. Here is the wiki on LG.

Lake George, nicknamed the Queen of American Lakes,[1] is a long, narrow lake at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains, northern New York, U.S. The lake extends about 32.2 miles (54 km) on a north-south axis and varies from 1 to 3 miles (1.7 to 5 km) in width.

The lake was originally named the Horican, meaning "tail of the lake", by local Native Americans, and was called the Horican in James Fenimore Cooper's narrative Last of the Mohicans.

The first European visitor to the area, Samuel de Champlain, noted the lake in his journal on July 3, 1609, but did not name it. In 1646, the missionary Isaac Jogues named it Lac du Saint-Sacrement, and the exit stream as the river La Chute (the fall).

On August 28, 1755, Sir William Johnson led British colonial forces to occupy the area in the French and Indian War. He renamed the lake as Lake George for King George II and built a protecting fortification at its southern end. The fort was named Fort William Henry after the King's grandson Prince William Henry, a younger brother of the later King George III. On September 8, 1755 the Battle of Lake George was fought between the forces of Britain and France.

Why is the King so tough to freeze, is it the depth or the wind?  I have never been up there in the winter, but would like to give it a shot President's day weekend.

it seems like everyone except the locals call it "the king". i think it's corny so i call it by the name it was given. 3-4 weeks till ice im guessing. the wind has been terrible last few days. if theres 5mph winds in a neigborhood down the road, it seems like they'll be 25-30 mph on the lake. anyways, yeah its an awsome lake for dink perch... unless you know where to go. im glad all this snow came before the freeze though.

Snow falling into open water helps to lower the temp and gets it to freeze faster. Snow faling onto 2 inches of ice can insulate it and really hinder the formation of more ice, even with really cold temps.

i was up there today mid-day to get my boat out... wasn't expecting it to freeze so quickly. million dollar beach is starting to freeze about 100 yds out, mason bay starting to freeze, frozen between speaker heck and east side, huddle starting to freeze, frozen off vet's park etc etc etc. i guess that's what -20 will do.

I was looking at some pictures I took last year and the ice wasn't safe at Vets until around Jan 24th last year. With skim ice starting to from already we should be out there before then. I know I've got my fingers crossed.
