Twenty Below Wind Chills... Am I Insane?
« on: Feb 18, 2015, 04:38 PM »
.

I planned a fishing trip for early tomorrow morning. I wanted to hit the ice at 2 a.m. I wanted to jig for smelt until dawn, then use some smelt for bait for a while on tip-ups before returning home.  However, after checking the forecast for tomorrow morning it is supposed to be very cold. The high for tomorrow is forecast to be 0°. But, the forecasted wind chill factors are -20°!

I have done it before.  I guess I am a diehard.  I know I will be cleaning my tip-up holes out every twenty minutes.  I know I'll go through a few hand warmers and fight the elements all the while I am out there.  Oh, and I have an Arctic Armor suit, so that gives me a big advantage.

But, what I am wondering is- who else is this crazy?  Because, damn the forecast, I think I am going anyway!  Also, are the fish as less likely to bite with an oncoming cold front in the winter as they are in the summer? Do you think it makes that much of a difference? Have you ever scored a seriously good catch during a bitter cold ice fishing outing? I'd be interested in hearing any and all input and experiences.

Yes I have had success on bitterly cold days on a couple of local reservoirs and Saratoga lake for pike, perch and walleye.

If you have a shanty and a heater,no problem, dress right and use your head,
lately,if you want to fish you have to deal with these conditions,
and you have to be a little crazy anyways to ice fish, lol

TRAPPER SAID "for  a  smelt  and  hopefully a  lake  trout ??????  your  not  even talking   decent  crappies  or  perch ........  you  are  crazy"

Well, I was thinking a hundred (or two) smelt, and maybe a brown or a rainbow trout.  We love our smelt.   If I had a good lead on where to bag me some perch or crappie, I wouldn't rule it out.    Do you really think it is stupid?  I get a thrill out of beating the elements.  I think it's cool to have the ice to myself, too.  Especially if I'm catching fish!

I use to be that crazy, BUT retirement and age have sharpened my  mind a tad to only fish when the wind chill is above zero .Good luck, you'll be able to brag about the experience especially if you do well. Usually when the weather sucks the fishing is great so when's the fish fry?

my wife, buddy and myself went monday morning, and on the way to the lake my truck read -21 real temp.  it was cold but dress properly and use a heater and shanty and you should be ok. once we got set up and the sun came up the heater went on low because it was that warm in the shanty

Like everyone else has said, as long as your dressed properly its not an issue.  We've had a few days much colder than that already this year.

I've fished in those conditions several times this season.  To me cold weather isn't a deterrent.  With today's tech you can fish comfortably in wicked cold.  You have to follow the basics we all know too to ensure you're safe in extreme temps.

One thing I'd say I've been doing a lot of is trying to find any decent spots in the lee of the constant wind we've had.
