i tried to be nice
« on: Jan 29, 2013, 03:30 PM »
got out on the hardwater for the first time of the season on MLK day. went to Loon lake. was the first one there. while i was fishing, i met a couple of nice high school kids that were on the ice next to me. super nice. they got lost getting from Geneva to Loon Lake. by the time they found the lake, they had no gas left in their truck and no money to get home. i offered them $20 cash and they took it and were very thankful. they said they would mail me money, but i am yet to see it. i guess i fell for that one. i still havent given up hope though

When you lay your head down at night you will sleep well, knowing you did the right thing.

very nice of you,
have to use common sense,
but cant let the fear of being scammed stop you from being generous
me personally? probably wouldnt have given them the money, have heard ran out of gas few too many times to think its legit.

Something like that happened to me. A young man and young lady were walking past our job site and asked if there was a gas station near by because their car had run out of gas. I told them it was a couple of miles down the road but they could use my gas I had for my mortar mixer( about 2-3 gallons ) but just bring me back my can and don't worry about the gas that I had enough for the day. They said thanks and that was the last I seen of them or my can. Maybe nice guys do finish last.

I'm on the road a lot. I work around some of the , shall we say, low end stores in the world. They can be in some fairly depressed areas.

One learns to recognize a scammer. I've heard the ran out of gas story, the "I need bus fair to get to the doctor" story, the "I'm a diabetic and need my insulin" story, the "My wife's in emergency and I can't afford a cab" story....you name it. I've heard it.

I've also stopped and given a sawbuck to a guy pushing a cart full of cans down to the grocery store. More than once.

Random acts of kindness need no reasons. Just help when and if you can.

Dom...you're a real "Old Hippie"  ;D

Altruism is a 4 syllable word, has that ever been done before on Ice Shanty?

Driving down a back road we came upon a couple with a young child (5ish). Out of gas. We had a can but empty so the guy says that 5miles down the road is a gas station. He gave us a 50 all he had. 15 miles later we find the station and back we go. Give him the gas and change wait to make sure the car starts. Car starts and the guy closes the door and drives away. No thanks or anything. WOW so much for being a nice guy.

My Dad had a saying (if a man ask for a dollar for a sandwitch, offer him ,that you will buy a sandwich). If he takes the sandwitch he is hungry. If he said no he goes hungry.

If it was college kids I would be very surprised if you get it back. Most kids in college have no concept of money. If it was someone older who has a better concept of working for your money I bet you would get it back. Either way it was a very nice gesture on your part.

I had the same thing happen to me many yrs ago.I gave a guy 20.00 for gas and asked him for an ID and he says sorry left it in car( I was going to hang on to  his drivers license).Red flag went up,  asked him to leave his  leather jacket with me  while he went for gas.  He never came back for his jacket and I gave it to Viet nam veterans store. 2 days latter the guy was arrested for stealing a  purse from one of my tenants when she opened her door to help him out . Even though there are some   that are willing to scam people it still shouldn't stop people from helping somone out . You did a good thing.
