BOBHOUSE BREAK-INS!

CONCORD, N.H. -- After several incidents in which bobhouses were forcibly entered and gear stolen last week, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials are advising ice anglers to be aware that this activity is going on, to not leave items of value in their bobhouses, and to report suspicious activity to authorities.

The bobhouse break-ins have not been restricted to a single locality -- shanties on two different bodies of water have been targeted. Incidents occurred this week on 19 Mile Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee in Tuftonboro and on Loon Lake in Freedom, N.H. Both were areas where a vehicle could be driven out onto the ice. The perpetrators pried locks off the bobhouse doors to gain access. Power ice augers, heaters and tip-ups were among the items stolen.

"The thefts are a serious legal violation and a real breach of trust for people who for years have believed their property would be safe in a community space," said Fish and Game Conservation Officer Alex Lopanshanski. "In several of the cases, the fishing gear had sentimental value because it had been passed down in the family for many years."

The N.H. Fish and Game Department is actively investigating the break-ins in conjunction with local police departments. Anyone who has information on the incidents, or who has witnessed suspicious activity, is being asked to contact N.H. Fish and Game Dispatch at 603-271-3361 or the Carroll County Sheriff's Office at 603-539-2284.

"In the meantime, please be sure to remove valuable gear from your bobhouse when you leave, and call if you see any suspicious activity," said Lopanshanski.

My home got B&E'd last tuesday. 2nd time in 5 years. I can understand the meth-heads that want my wifes jewlrey and our spare change, but a bobhouse with fishing gear... it's not like they can sell this stuff, so they are actually going to use it? Who can go out and use all this stolen gear and sleep at night? I just don't understand how that kind of mind works.

Well they are dumb enough to steal our equipment , maybe they will be dumb enough to post the items for sale on craigslist or other local ads (and get busted). If my equipment was stolen I would be checking all the papers or ads to see if the dumb arse was trying to sell it. It sucks you cant leave your stuff LOCKED up without vandals messing with it. On the other hand I personally will not leave high value items sitting in my fish house unattended, everything is worth way to much and I couldnt afford to replace it.

If your gear is stolen don't forget to check the local pawn shops that is where these drug addicts go for quick money they don't care how much they get as long as they can get high.

Sorry to hear Doc. Karma man, Karma.

I personally don't keep anything in my bobhouse. It means alot of carrying back and forth and re-setting back up everyday but at least I still have my stuff.

I bet a well placed bear trap inside the door would deter them from doing other break-ins!

Duct tape them to a chair and drill holes in a circle around them on warm sunny day. Then watch them drop. Chum for our fish.

Oh, I'm sure my dog slowed them down... by demanding to have her belly patted.

I like the bear trap idea. Only problem is you'll be the one who goes to jail or get sued or both.

Yep. It's a shame, but there is only one real, surefire line of defense against these jerks. A good insurance policy.
