Power auger weight?
« on: Sep 26, 2012, 02:31 PM »
Does anyone know where you can find a weight comparison of power ice augers. I have a old model 30 jiffy but I am not getting any younger and it isn't getting any lighter. I am guessing a 20 yr. old model 30 weighs around 38 lbs?

The StrikeLite II 8"is supposed to weigh in at 23 lbs. and the new 8" jiffy pro 4  propane looks like it comes in at 34 lbs.
and what does a old jiffy mod 30 weigh?
Maybe we should all weigh our augers and start a list on here? We could compile a weight list and copy and paste it as we get new augers? time to getout the bathroom scale. I will weigh my 20 yr old 8" jiffy model 30 tonight.

Geez, Eriksat I was thinking like you did! I thought my Model 30 weighed waaaaay more than it does apparently!

Gofish, (I hope not to sound too ignorant here), but what is a tree tapper and Fin-bore?  ???
How much further I could walk by shedding 15 pounds!

I've got one of the older Model 30's with the Tecumseh motor and a 10" bit. It is a heavy beast! But it cuts like a mutha and hasn't let me down.

I can't wait to be drilling with it! Might go home and fire it tonight just to hear that wonderful sound!

Tree tapper  echo model EDR2400 gas powered drill
remove chuck you need to make and adapter to screw on to drill left hand thread. Mine is aluminum and made in a local machine shop. It's made to take a lazer 6" auger. I made it 6" longer so I can extend with deeper ice. The local highschool machine shop makes them for class projects. Give them the drill and auger and they make the adapter to fit drill and auger.

weight drill and 6" auger 14lbs  8"auger 16lbs
jet sled 7lbs
bucket 2rods scoop box of jigs 4lbs
madcum vxi 7lbs
This auger fits in a jet sled which makes it easy to drag. I mostly jig so it works great for moving around.
Yes it's expensive but you only buy it one time. If you know a landscaper he might get a break on the price. Mine is six years old only change the plug every year.

Good thing I'm a machinist.
Bad thing I have no money.  ;D

I will look into this though! At least if I come into some dough, I'll have a lightweight option. Thanks!

Of course thats with the 48" steel bit, a 42" will shave a pound or 2 more off that....

The Tanaka, is a industrial / commercial grade engine, lightweight, fuel efficient, no plastic handles or parts to reduce weight. The auger, converts to hand use that's something that Jiffy, StrikeMaster, and Eskimo can't do.

I wish a model 30 jiffy was 30.4 lbs, but it's more like 37 or so.

Well what Jiffy calls the classic model 30 is now a lot of plastic, my 20+ year old one is all metal except for the gas tank. I keep forgetting to weigh it, tonight for sure.

I look forward to hearing what it weighs....mine is an old metal one too, but I have no scale in the house. Yeah, there's a reason for that; I don't care what I weigh lol.

see i was thinking of doing the same thing...kinda...taking an eskimo stingray and making an adapter for a hand auger.  probably would be well under the 20 lb. mark i would think.

I'm not trying to start a auger weight argument here and yes the new model 30 xt augers are in that 29-31 lb range. I'm just a little old school and when someone mentions model 30 or 29 I think of a 3hp Tecumseh. I'm someone that likes to start my auger and pop 20-30 holes on a good weed line and that darn auger seems like it gets heavier every year. I'm going to see how the reviews on the new Strikemaster/Honda 4 stroke come in this year and make my decision next season on either buying that or the Nils.

I'm a Nils user and a bit of a self admitted gear junky.  I really like the sounds of that Strikemaster Honda 4 and would be sorely tempted to get one if I didn't already have the Nils.  However, I thought I read somewhere the gears were a composite and not metal.  Has anybody seen/heard similar?
