She was 5, and loves it. You just gotta be ready to leave, even if they are bitting.

my oldest first time out was his 2nd birthday, was a short trip because we did not have a perm. built yet.  the 2nd one was year and a half, but that was in the perm  shack.  And our newest addition, 6 months he has not been out yet, but if the perm is all warmed up, ice safe and such, I think he will get exposed sometime soon too.  Both of his older brothers love to go, they ask ever day if we can head to the lake for a while.

my daughter has been going out since she was 4
If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

started both mine at late 2 put them in the backpack fly fishing the creeks and when the ice is safe i take them. last year my son had just turned 3 and he loved it. would stay all day then on the way off the ice on the wheeler he'd be sleeping before we'd get to the truck. once this summer we were bank fishing and the little guy threw rocks for 6 straight hours. well as he was falling asleep in the truck his arm was still slinging rocks, love taking my kids. in fact today just bought my first boat so we can fish more ;D

girls started at 4 and 6 and the little guy's been night fishing for kokanee since he was 2 and half he loves the snowmobile ride out and has thrown 3 rods down the hole
my second oldest daughter even fished a spring tournament on flathead lake at 17 degrees she laid in the bottom of the boat with blankets for 3 and a half hours and then landed 5 lake trout herself
is it wrong to be turned on by an icehole?

My lil guy was 4 this summer and caught his first perch  :)  and I told him he had to kiss it.  It was great and he's looking forward to hitting the ice soon.

I was around 14 when I started ice fishing and I actually convinced my dad to give it a try. Would have loved to start sooner but never really had the opportunity.  Around 4 years old sounds perfect for first time out

My boy started at 18 months or so, and my daughter started the weekend after her 2nd birthday (this year).  The boy loves it, the jury is still out for the daughter, but I think she'll come around!  The boy is 3 this year, and we've had trips that lasted all day, and some that lasted 30 minutes.  It's all about keeping them happy, engaged, having fun.  If it starts taking a turn for the worse, we pack it up and find some fun elsewhere!  That way every trip is a positive experience.

Took my youngest daughter out at the age of 3 after many fights with the wife, I won lol. Shes 8 now and wants to go every time I load up, just like my lab. lol  They are the best fishing partners a guy could have. Just keep them warm, and plenty of snacks and drinks, and when they are really young, ya cant stay very long. ;D ;D  Enjoy, and cherish taking them fishing they grow up soooooooooooooooo fast.

I started taking my boys when they were 4 and 5...   I try to take them somewhere that is easy access to the fishing spot and plenty of fish help too.  If the fishing is slow it can be hard to keep them interested.

I started my 1st son at age 3 and brought toys to play in the snow and deer jerky to chew on.  He is now 6 and is totally hooked.
My second son is 2 1/2 and he will start this weekend.  A permanent shack helps with the warmth and room to move around.  We also bring marshmallows to roast some times and hot dogs and a second pair of boots and socks when they decide to put their feet in the holes.  We will see how this weekend goes.  Good luck.

My daughter just turned for this past fall. She's been soft water fishing with me since she's been able to walk. This year she will brave the ice with her old man! Really looking 4ward to teaching her everything I know and hopefully I can learn a bunch from her too!

Mine were 4 too.  Seems to be a good age.  Old enough to have a good time if you can occupy them.  Then the next few years you can start to really teach them.

My boy was 3 when I took him out.  Kept the trips short though.....2 hours max.  Brought some toys for him to play with and towed him around on the sled when the flags were not flying to keep him interested.  He is 9 now and can't wait to go on our first trip this Sunday and he'll go sun up to sundown now.
