That's a beautiful fly RG.  Epoxy makes flies look so much more real.  I used to tie some crayfish patterns with epoxy but I don't like to spend the money on epoxy anymore because I do not fly fish much and most of my flies that aren't tied for 'gills or steelhead have never touched the water and I got so many hobbies to spend money on.

This is the bugger I'm working at. Any suggestions or patterns would be helpful. Gotta figure out a way to make it more plump.

Already wrapped under the swiss straw. I was thinking surgical rubber tubing, if I can find the right size.

Heck, the fish probably won't care anyway.

Sorry A-Bomb, my crusty old brain confused you with another member. I just realized you're in Indy.

That "thing" is what we commonly call an Oak Leaf Bug. It's the larval stage of the crane fly. It inhabits small feeder streams of  the Finger Lakes. They're found mixed in the old leaf matter that collects in the streams.

I've seen them up to 2" in length, the average is around 1 1/2".

Got a fly tieing kit for christmas.  You know what I'm going to be doing for the next couple weeks.  I'll post some pictures when I finally get some presentable work.

RG they make a small diameter tubing for tying flies.  It comes on a spool similar to thread.  It can be stretched to get a thinner diameter.  I have seen it a Gander.  Just a thought.

I have another idea....came to me this morning while I was "working".

I'll give it a try tomorrow night maybe. Right now I'm enjoying the comfy chair, a movie and a beer after a long day at work ::)

Here's a new pattern I'm expirementing with for ice gills.  It is wrapped with lead wire underneath and has a bead head so it sinks like a jig.  Any thoughts?

RG I looked at my material collection and I think the best choice for a base to that bug larva is and round kerosene lamp wick.  You can get it in about different thicknesses to match your bug diameter then color it  however you want.

There's one I haven't thought of.

Iceman, you may want to tie down that lead, It tends to unravel.

A few more for you guys.  I posted these in another thread, but figured I would add them here too.  Hope that's not against the rules and if it is, can a mod delete the other posting?
