After 15 years of companionship the vet said within a month I have to put Jasper my dog down............Has anyone have to do this? I am not looking forward to this being my birthday in a couple of days. He has always gone fishing and camping with me all the times.(http://)(http://i980.photobucket.com/albums/ae290/jodycanfish/JASPER/100_0579.jpg)(http://)(http://i980.photobucket.com/albums/ae290/jodycanfish/100_0584.jpg)

you gave him a good home and a good life man.  a buddy of mine just had to do the same w/ his black lab, oddly enough also named jasper...it'll be hard for a couple days but time heals all wounds.  take care & tight lines.

I put my yellow lab (Atilla) down 3 days before deploying to Iraq back in 2004 - Very, very tough.  The vet was nice enough to come out to my house for the task, and then took Tilla away with her.  Made it somewhat easier, but still tough.  Got a new partner in crime when I came back - A great dog, but not Tilla.

I have had to do it several times over my life and it sucks.
Do yourself a big favour, when you go to take him in Don't Stay.
It is much easier if you don't have to watch them go through it.
It's not terrible but the fact that your best friend slips away in you arms takes much longer to deal with. Just writing this brings a tear to my eye remembering my German Sheppard that I stayed with as she passed. That was back in the 80's.
My other dogs all I can remember are the good times not the bad.
That is my best advise for dealing with having to say goodbye to a good friend.
That and go to the shelter and find a new friend. I did!!  ;D

I picked this guy up from the shelter when he was 12 or 14 weeks old.

Now he's 2 1/2 years old and loves fishing.

Been there a few times and it hurts. They are unconditional.  Put my roadie down a year ago. Best bird dog I ever had.  It gets better but you never forget the good ones.  Got a new s#@teater a month ago.  She's already getting to me. Still think about him alot. Damn Dogs anyway.

To be honest with you, this is going to be one of the toughest things you"ll have to do in life. :(   I had a dog for 14 years , she went everywhere with me , and definitely was my bestfriend but in 1997 I had to have her put down due to her health .  To this day
I can picture her looking at me as the Vet walked away with her. She knew that was going to be our last goodbye. But as someone said, time does make it easier but the memories will stay with you forever.  I am sorry that you have to go through this and remember its ok to shed some tears, anyone whose been through this knows how tough it is! We're here for you , if you need a friend to talk to! Brenda aka icewoman

Sorry to hear the sad news JJK, I have had to do this more than I care to remember. There is no easy remedy, only a moral duty to a good friend. Everyone has their own way of dealing with the task. I stay with my dogs when they are put down, the first dog I had to have put down I did not stay and I kicked myself in the butt ever since that day as I was not there for my best friend in his final moments. I also do not let the vet have the remains, I build a box (coffin) and put several items that the old boy liked (an old decoy or a fechin' stick) in with him. I am lucky enough that I own property along the Missouri river so I bury all my friends along the river bank, that's just my sappy little way of dealing with it. Some may think it's silly but if ya read my sig you'll know how I feel about other people's opinions. I have a good friend that owns a funeral home and he always told me that a funeral is for the living not the dead, it helps the living move on from that point and put perspective on what has transpired. I've always had at least 1 Lab and sometimes as many as 3 at one time, I probably always will have Labs. At least I always have someone to talk to, good luck and you'll be fine when it's all said and done. A new friend is a puppy away. Like the others have said it's okay to shed a tear, I am right now.

My first Rottweiler was so big that it took my dad and myself just to carry her and put her in the back of the van. At the vets office the only vet on duty was a lady who only weighed 95 pounds so she had to do it in the van.. My dad was at home digging the grave with the backhoe...Now 14 years later I have another one that I hope she will at least last till summer and I will have to go through it again... Its not easy so all you can do is think that you gave them the best life you could..... I feel for you....

Thank you from my whole family, I have decided to take him fishing one more time this weekend and treat him like a king. I know I am not suppose to do this but Jasper loves beer when he can sneak a can thats left unattened when we are camping, so as a treat he can have some with his favorite meals. Thanks again everyone for the support

Sorry about your loss brother; been there myself numerous time and it still hurts. Al you can do is think that you are making them safe and comfortable as they move onto the rainbow bridge.

Best of luck and get yourself another fishing pal as soon as you can. You are not replacing him only the void in your house and they will fill a missing piece in your heart.

I grew up on a farm, in my 30 years I saw 3 dogs pass on. The last one was a mean border collie, one day I came home from work and he wasn't around, so I searched for him and I found him in an old play house out back. I berried him in the bush. But the next day when I got home from work I knew we had to have another dog, my dad and sister must have agreed, because we only went one day without a dog. That was 8 years ago, now we have a little mutt named scooter (nicknamed "shyster"), we sold the farm and she went with my parents, my dad passed away and my mom moved into a condo and she came to live with my wife and I, she will be a hard one to let go of, and I can see it will come too soon.

A new dog will help, it won't solve everything, but it will take your mind off the hurt.

So sorry to hear about your companion. I have  had to put 2 of my last  dogs down before they were 3 years old. Harder to lose a dog, than some people. Do an online search for  Rainbow Bridge Pet Poem. A friend had sent it to me when I lost my 1st dog. Hope it helps a little bit, everyone that has lost a dog will think about their companion when they read it

On the farm, we used to do it ourselves....feed em a great meal...take them for a nice walk/run/limp....play with them, pet them....take em for a walk at sundown as if we were going rabbit shooting....I know they died happy, quick, clean and never saw it coming.... here in America...things seem to be a little different. I was with my wife and her faithful black lab when he got his shot at the vets.....she cradled his head as he slipped away.....that affected me more than the ones I did or witnessed on the farm.....how humane are we really when we go "by the book"? Just a thought, not looking to start a flame war. By the way, all your stories about your buddies brought a tear to my eye as well....the saying goes "The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man's."  ~Mark Twain, letter to W.D. Howells, 2 April 1899

It's tough, brother. But, unlike an earlier poster, I would definitely stay there as the vet puts your dog down. I always have for mine. Wouldn't you want someone you love by your side as you slip away? Stay with Jasper, hold him, talk to him, remind him of the good times you had together. It's going to be hard, don't get me wrong. But remember, your doing it for him...

I haven't had to put one down in about a decade but I did just loose my best friend of 5 years the day after christmas to kidney failure, the pain is still horrendous and the nightmares are worse.  They say that in time things get better and while I agree with them, the "time" they talk about is different for everyone.  I am not even close to being comfortable with the fact that my best friend is gone but I deal with it, I cry alot (good thing I live alone) laugh some, and remember every second of being out with her that I can possibly remember and things are getting better but it is SLOW.

I too had to do this and don't know if there's right way, a better way or an easier way but do what YOU think YOU should do and don't worry about what others think. Someone in this thread said happiness is just a puppy away. There is some truth to that. Good luck and remember the time when............

Next to my chair, as I type this, is a collage of pictures with a pencil sketch (by my son) of our departed family pet, Miss Beasley. A good hunting beagle and loved family member. She's gone many years now, I can't replace her. We had to put her to rest with debilitating cancer. As difficult and emotional act as I've had to perform. The vet was kind and understanding. We said our goodbyes while she was alive.

I don't envy you your task, I envy you your memories.

here is that rainbow bridge poem that was mentioned in the thread before.   it holds hope for me in the fact that when its my time, i will be reunited with all the dogs that ive loved in the past.    especially the one that i lost just recently, a lil beagle puppy, she was my lil lap dog.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm sorry you're going through this.  I had to put my German Shepherd down when she was 13.  She was the best family dog I've ever had -   Intelligent, loyal, protective, but GREAT with kids.  Every child in the neighborhood knew and loved her.  She used to get on the school bus every morning as if checking to make sure it was safe before letting the kids leave.  The day I put her down I cried so hard I couldn't tell the vet why we were there - my Daughter had to do that.  I stayed til the end because I felt I had to be there with her in her last moments - I owed her that much.  I feel for you, but you'll get through it.  The best advice I can offer is don't rush get another dog thinking he/she will be the same.  Dogs like that come around once in a lifetime.

Just a story and some dog wisdom to help you along your journey:

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old IrishWolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they  were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying.  I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.  They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.  Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.  Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully  away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.  We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."  Startled, we all turned to him.  What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"  The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply.
Love  generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.  Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal.  Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Do me a favor and give Jasper a good rub behind the ears for me and tell him that he has friends in Wisconsin thinking about him.

Man posts like this literally hurt the heart
When I was 19 Years old my old man got sent to 9/11 to assist at ground zero.  I quickly became the man of the house.  We had a purebread german shepard names "Travis".  He was about 120 lbs and had one ear that never stood up straight but was the nicest, best guard dog around with the best tempermant. Make a long story short, I had to put him down while my pops was in NYC.  By far the hardest thing ever.  Balled the whole way to the vet and home.  I couldnt bring myself to stay with him in the room.  I wanted to remember him in his best form and not layign on a table.  He was having 4-5 seizures daily and out family at the time couldnt afford the meds for him.  Still think about that day often......still hurts....
When I hit the hard water this weekend, I will have a swig of Wild Turkey American Honey for you both.  It sucks bro, no reason to sugar coat it........and Im sorry.

Shedding a tear thinking about the day we had to put our lab down, but also smiling thinking about her and the happiness she brought our family.  I didn't think I could stay with her on that day, but I  did, and  am glad I did.  My wife and I comforted her as her suffering ended and she slipped peacefully away to a better place.  If you choose to stay with him, try to take care of all of your paperwork with the vet ahead of time, this way you minimize your time dealing with people during this difficult time.  So sorry for your loss!!

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thank you for the poem..... it was very touching. Cheers   JODY

Thank you all and I will give him many scratches behind the ears for you

JJK, I have just sat here for the past 15 minutes reading through all the posts that have been added , shedding some tears and thinking back through all the pets I have had in my life. It is never easy to help a friend leave this world, yet a true friend would do all they can to make that easier and be there for them. I for one would be with my pet right to the end as I know they would be with me if I am to go first.

I love the way you said you were taking him out on the ice with you and going to treat him like a king for another day, bless you, you are a great person for thinking of him and I am sure that is just where he wants to be, not at home waiting, but out with you living and sharing in your love for one another, the time will come for the tears let now be for the time to make more happy memories. When it is all said and done, and the next out with out him, set your next round of flags for him, let me know and I will to the same for you and say a prayer for you and your friend.

I had to do that to my old pal boots this last spring. She was 18 years old and it was time. I talked to the vet about it and he said: make a list of things Boots use to love to do and then make a list of things that she still can do. That hit home with me because the latest list wasn't even close to the same has her old list. It was still hard to do but the list made it make more sense and made it a bit easier.

Good old boots is on the right. Picture from Dec. of 1998.

Been there, done that, JJK.  Part of having had the time to share is having to do the right thing. It's tough to do.
Know this: there are many more companions waiting to be chosen. Let your self have another one.  They help us live longer, listen to our every word and don't talk back.  My condolences.

Do yourself a big favour, when you go to take him in Don't Stay.
It is much easier if you don't have to watch them go through it.
It's not terrible but the fact that your best friend slips away in you arms takes much longer to deal with

I totally disagree with this statement.Five years ago i had my rottie put to sleep. My wife went with me i was not going to go in the room with him.My wife looked at me and said you selfish ***** he was your best freind and always  was there for you .Now act like a man, go in and hold him so his last memory is of you.It was the hardest thing i have ever done. But not a goes by that i dont thank my wife for telling me to go in there. If i would have let him go without me i would have regreted it fover ever. That being said i feel your pain and im deeply sorry.Remember we will will see them again on that big chunk of ice in the sky.

MY BLOSSOM--,WHEN THE VETput the needle in her arm I HAD MY FACE,right in hers,  . the last thing she seen was me. looked to me like she was thinking, i'm tired, and i want to go to sleep  just like when she was a puppy. no regrets on that decision. She had kidney failure. and was very sick. i did all i could to save her, with the week long visits to the vet, it was worth the money spent, to try to get her better. vet said- there was nothing he could do to make her better.--his reputation-here was excellent. in the end she gave me a lick on the nose- and the vet said,  SHE'S GONE.

Sorry.

I just put down my Brittany last Nov, he was 12, he suffered quite a bit the last 12 month's but dreaded taking him to the vet as I knew what the outcome would be,but looking back it wasn't fair to the dog as he suffered to much, you will know when its time, you can see it in their eyes, but Mac was a great companion for me as I trialed him and hunted over him and then the last couple of years he accompanied me and my other Brittany fishing thru the winter and summer, he was quite the thief as he would wander around the ice visiting other fellow fisherman and steal the odd fish and bring it back to me and was proud as punch as he would drop the find at my feet looking for a pat on the head.

JJK,
I can not tell you how bad I feel for you. Three weeks ago monday, I had to put down my best friend Reba. She meant everything to me. I knew the day was coming, but it came apon very quickly. It was best for her as she is not hurting anymore. I spent almost 13 years having her as my best friend and riding partner. The nite she died, I had a fire in the back yard in her honor and toasted her memories with a few beers and part of a bottle of Jack and cried like a baby. I think of her alot and will continue too. We had her cremated and have her ashes on the mantel of our fire place and I have her collar on the rear view mirror in my truck. I have tears in my eyes now thinking of Reba and you being in the spot your in. Enjoy Jasper now and do the right thing for him when the time comes. As for being there when the time comes, only you can decide. I was there with Reba and do not regret it. I was there to kiss her goodbye and share her last breath. God I loved that dog !
Good luck to both you and Jasper.. I will be thinking of both of you.

I agree wholeheartedly.  It's the right thing to do and I'm really glad my Daughter and I were there for her last seconds.  I know it was comforting for her to see us holding her as she slipped away.

After 15 years of companionship the vet said within a month I have to put Jasper my dog down............Has anyone have to do this? I am not looking forward to this being my birthday in a couple of days. He has always gone fishing and camping with me all the times.
sorry  to hear it.ive had to do the same several times.ive spent more time with my labs the my friends over the past 20 yrs. and it never gets any easier.the vet told me with my last lab, baron, not to put him down just let happen what is meant to be.i was torn as i didnt want to see him suffer.in the end i was glad i didnt, there was a 3 day period  1 day before he passed that he was himself again running retrieving, acting like the pup he always was.im glad we had those  couple of good days! WE AS DOG LOVERS KNOW FROM THE BEGINING THAT OUR FRIEND WILL LIVE ONLY A SHORT WHILE,COMPARED TO OURSELVES,BUT WE WILL NEVER STOP CHOOSING THEM AS OUR FRIENDS !

Everyone is different and has their own thoughs on this sad subject.
Of the 3 pooches I have had pass on in my life she was the only one I stayed with. The first I was still very young and my folks took care of her and the last was left with my folks when I moved up north. She lost the use of her rear legs and my folks took care of her. I'm still haunted by the thought of the memories of my sheppard I stayed with until the end. After she was gone I was a complete wreck for 2 months and could barely function. No I know my pets will forgive me if I don't stay with them because it causes me too much pain to watch them expire. Of my pets that I was not there when they passed the first and only things I remember are the good times such as my first pup Susie going to fetch a stick and brining me a 3" diameter 8 foot tree.  :)Sadly the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Mary my sheppard is her passing, I have a hard time getting past that even today nearly 20 years later.  :'(

Hey I'm with you, I don't want to be there with my dogs when they pass either. But I come from a farming back ground, and I won't be taking my dogs to the vet to do it either. If its up to me (and I think my wife will be with me on this), I will put them down myself. I know I could ask my father inlaw to do it and he would, but I would have a hard time forgiving anyone but myself for putting my dogs down.

It is a dog, as emotionally attach as we get to them, they are just an animal.
(I know I will be hated for this comment, but you can't go through life allowing emotions to control your life, and it sucks sometimes)

12 years ago, we had to put down our Westie, his name was Duke,
he was the greatest dog to our family, I have 3 kids and they loved him of course we all did,, he got cancer in the bladder, I can still remember taking him for a walk the day we took him to the vet to be put down, he was in pain, was bleeding, he knew it was his time, he dug a hole for himslelf in the backyard to make himself more comfortable  that day, as hard as it was we had to do it for him. After Duke died or Vet informed us about another Westie that was abused and needed a home, we took him home and named him Cubby, he's 10 now and we just got another one from my wifes Aunt--named Charlie he's 7 months, so as the saying goes Life goes on. You have good memories that will never be forgotten, and Jasper and Duke are in a better place.

I guess on my part I am being selfish not realizing what is best for Jasper but now I know what I have to do.......... for Jasper not me.....

a legend i heard, attributed to the iroqouis people, tells that after you die, you have to make your way "up the mountain" to the happy hunting ground.
on the way is a great gorge you must cross by means of a fallen log.
all of your dogs that passed before you are waitng on the other side, holding the log steady in their teeth.
if you treated them well, they hold the log steady for you.
if you beat them, they will growl at you and let go of the log.

I'm sorry to hear about your buddy. I have a 9yr old Retriever that is getting unhealthy and I'm fearing the day is coming sooner then I want to admit.

I've had to put one other dog down because he got mean and we have children. Nobody wanted to take him so I didn't have a choice and wasn't taking a chance with the kids.  (Shepard/coyote mix) He was still a loyal dog to me and when I took him in I stayed and he fought the drugs hard, he was healthy. I'll never forget it and I'll have to live with that the rest of my life. It was hard man, I balled like a baby.

People saying stay and go, that's your choice but with my retriever, he's my boy.. I'd definitely stay no matter how hard it is going to be. I wouldn't want to do it if the dog has any strength though because they just don't lay there and die. I would rather keep them comfy at home as long as possible and give them morphine or something to ease the pain until they are too weak to fight "the shot". Maybe that's selfish, but having your buddy getting up wanting you to help him knowing something aint right will tear your heart to pieces. It's not always like the "Marley and Me" movie so go prepared.

I'll pray that he goes peacefully, I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry about your friend I feel your pain
I held my Jackson with my wife we made sure he knew we loved him
That was 6 years ago and I still choke up when I think about it
He was a shelter dog that shared our home for 14 years

JJK, I hope you and Jasper have a blast together.  And you won't regret being with him at the end.  He has always been there for you, and now you'll get to repay him for all his loyalty.  I have a 10 year old Golden who is like one of the kids to us.  I can't imagine life without him, and his time is slowly coming to an end.  His health has been in a decline for about 7 months.  As long as the vet tells me he isn't suffering, we will cherish every day with him.  But when the time comes, we have decided we won't prolong it for him.  He deserves the best from us,  and when he needs us, we will be there for him.  We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

JJK I hope he shares in not just your company in his last fishing days, but in the company of all your family that loves him and all the other fishermen/women that have gotten to know him through out the years, make this weekend a celebration of Jaspers life, then keep celebrating his life after that, just like you would do for a friend of the 2 legged kind.

May god be with you, you are in our prayers.

I grew up with an Australian Shepherd named Casper.  We got him when I was 6 years old.  We lived in new york on a farm and had some great times together, exploring, fishing, getting into trouble.  He was my best bud.  My parents and I moved to Florida when I was 11 and the dog came too.  We lived there for three years and then moved back to the farm.  I was 21 years old when age started catching up to Casper.  It happened so quick.  It was more than losing a friend.  It was like losing a very close family member.  He was around for most of my childhood.  I will miss him forever.  I know another dog can never replace him, but when you do get another dog, you will  eventually get attached to them too.  Sorry for your loss, remember the good times!

Well we went icefishing, set the shack up but for the whole day we didnt even take out the rods to fish. We just sat outside admiring the frost on the trees and bushes, went for a little walk and had a great lunch and a few pops. Next thing you know its supper time and time to go. For not fishing at all it was one of the best days I have had in awhile. Jasper was tiried but enjoyed it, I think. so like I said I have decided unless something great happens to go to the Vet on Sat. Feb.27............ He is going to the Vet this weekend to see if the Vet thinks he is in alot of pain and we will go from there. My whole family cant believe that for a fishing form the response from all of you made her cry, and me also.Thank you everyone and I will keep in touch of whats going on. This ones a true heartbreaker...  I was reading through this yesterday but couldn't bring myself to post a reply...... I have lost 3 good dogs over the last 30+ years and my 4th one is about 11 yrs old (we adopted him as a stray in our neighborhood about 9 years ago..).  He is my best friend in the world.  I almost can't think of being without him..  I know I will have to deal with his loss someday not too far off...  Just know you have alot of support and company in sharing the loss of your Jasper in the coming days or weeks..

Sorry to hear about your beloved friend. Back in 2003 my wife and I rescued a beautiful 115lb. American Bulldog, Roxie. She was a sweet loving and VERY protective part of our family for 4 happy years. Then one day she just changed. Not happy, wouldn't eat, almost depressed. We took her to the vet's, and after a large bill, we got the news. Roxie had cancer. We took her home, let her live her life in comfort until one day in September when we had no choice but to have her put down. One of the worst day's of my life.

(that's her in my avatar staring down the hole) she is that much attached to me. I don't know if I will be able to stand it when her time comes and I know it will. I hate losing a dog they are just so loyal and loving.... :'( :'(...WK

Sorry to hear about your best friend jjc.Last march 7,2009 we had to have our baby girl beth put to sleep, she was a seven year old bassett hound. We took her to the vet to have her shots and to be checked out,and the next morning we woke up she was paralyzed in her back legs. The vet didn't no what was wrong, but i think she had a reaction to the shot.We tried everything to keep her alive,we even had to use a towel around her back end so she could try to walk. She slept with me and my girlfriend since she was a puppy.I feel your pain brother,i still think of my baby girl.... :'( :'( :'(

He's a cute little guy.   Looks a lot like the dog i had as a kid.  i used to take him fishing in the summer and he would bark whenever my bobber started moving because he knew it meant I had a fish on.  I would take the bluegill off - he would hold it down with his front paw - and eat the head only.  Then he would watch the bobber til it started moving again.  He's been gone 30 years now and I still miss him.

my parents and i raised labs for 20 years. our dog that started it all was a yellow lab female (molly). when i was deployed to iraq, my mom actually brought her down to my unit headquarters so i could see her before i left. in april of 2004, molly finally passed away less then a month before her 17th birthday. when i called home my mom told me she had come home from work, and found the backporch door wide open, she went outside and found molly laying in her favorite spot under the maple trees in our backyard. i still tear up thinkin about how she knew it was time, opening the porch door and seeing the inside of the house for the last time. we decided to give up the kennel after that. a few years after, 3 of our hunting labs passed in the same year (wyatt, sunny, dixie). molly, wyatt, sunny, dixie are all buried on our property. the best thing to remember is that they go to a better place. they become part of the family, and our memories of them can never be replaced. i feel yer pain, and i wish you and yer family the best!

Threads like this kinda suck.....my pup is going on 15 in April...he has been through hell with me.  I've gone through addiction, recovery and the madness in between.  But through it all, he was still there.  He is in my profile pic.  Today he spends his time chasing the squirrels, cats and other critters out of the yard.  The yard isn't fenced, but he just doesn't have the spunk to chase them any further then out of the yard.  Back in the day he would have been down the road.  BUT when he day comes I have made the decision to be there holding him when he goes.  He was the one that went and got the people when I was in a alcohol induced coma, he saved my life in doing that.  SO when it's his time I will be there for him, holding him when he passes.

Losing your pets is supposed to be difficult. You'd be a lousy friend if it didn't bother you a lot. You can't just unplug several years of good friendship. Even after that dog is gone it will still be with you forever. The memories never go away. Just keep in mind you have a lot of good friends here that will always be with you too.

JJK,
Here's a little poem to help ease the pain. A friend sent it to me when I lost my best dog ever Thor a great duck hunting black lab.  Hope this helps. Ed Auman / Maine

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together

As far as Im concerned the best thing god put on this earth is the dog, there angels with tails.Theres been a long line of dogs in my life and I enjoy the memories of them all even from my early childhood.Me and my wife raised a beagle and schnauzer together and they were with us for many years and we had to put them down 6 months apart and it was by far the hardest thing Ive ever done,we were both there for the whole deal and I carried them both home and buried them in the yard with their own little markers.Went a few years with out a dog mostly because I was grief stricken, but time went by and I got a new buddy now and I guess that in its self was the best medicine.Good luck to you and your family and pray we all get to see our friends again on the other side.

i lost my first wife to cancer at 36 in june of 97 and my blk. lab onyx of 14yrs nov.24 the same yr.it almost killed because of being severly depressed.my dad told me i better do somthing soon besides lying on the couch.in jan.99 my dad brought me the morning paper.they showcased a dog from pound.i couldn't belive when i went down there and saw"bubba".i said is that the dog in the paper, she said yes.i said i'll take him.she said don't you want to take him for walk?i said to bubba hey boy he sat down and wagged his tail.i said nope i'll take him.he dragged me out of my depression. his real name was simba but when i remarried it was easier for my kids to say bubba.2yrs. ago he got a lump on his hip.i took him to the vet.she took x-rays came back and told me he had bone cancer and was very aggressive.what should i do?she said i would be back in less than a week and that he would be in pain.this is not what expected that i would be putting him down.when it was onyx's time it was old age i left him with the vet and went home i never forgave myself.i stayed with bubba till the end.i went home and wailed like a little baby it hurt so bad.these companions give us unconditional love to leave them alone in thier last moments to me is not right.the vet gave him a shot when his heart slowed she put a towel over his eyes because they don't close.within 3 min. he was at peace.
