We always wondered what it would be like to try to bring a 20 pound fish through the ice. Well, my son Nevin, AKA Minnow12 did it on Saturday during the Derby. Nevin had the fish on for at least 20 tense minutes, it took 4 blistering runs. Finally he got it to the hole but I missed twice at the gill plates and after another long run he got it within grasp of the hole and I was able to get my hands in the right spot. We couldn't believe our eyes this was the ONE! Nevin won overall big fish of the weekend with this 23 pound, 43" laker. Oh, did I mention he's only 13!!! I am the proudest Dad on the Planet!!!

minnow 12 nice fish way to go. was out there myself with Wyoming-ice. had a blast but not the fishing like you had. great job nice to see young one winning and getting out there.

Wow! Congrats Nevin! That is a gorgeous Laker, well done. GREAT JOB John for getting him out there for the derby. I was hoping you all would make it over for the Ducks unlimited benefit derby on Bass lake, unfortunately the ice didn't cooperate. BTW you should be one proud Dad!

307fish did you take that fish to have it mounted by Robert Ray in Daniel? I was talking with him at the auction on Saturday and he said that someone was bringing in a 20 pounder and I was wondering if it was you. He does amazing work. He did my first 20 pounder and has since done a brown and a banana trout for me. He has a kokanee of mine right now. By the way he said the other day that this is the first time in 27 years that he has seen the bottom of his freezer so it should be a fast turn around like 2-3 months is all. Just curious congrats regardless on a nice fish!

Thanks everyone! My dad and I had drilled so many holes but that was the only fish I marked out of that hole. I yelled for my Dad 5 times before he heard me say I got a Good One On! I knew it was a hog but I couldn't believe it when I saw that head come through the hole. I'll never forget this day with my Dad!!! And yes Robert Ray is doing my mount - I can't wait to see it!!

what lb test do you use for lake trout? Can't imagine getting something that big through the hole.

We use usually use 18-20 pound test with 12-20 pound leader that's about 8 feet long.

Just a heads up to everyone thinking of attending this year, there is a big youth hockey tournement in town the same weekend and hotel rooms will be tough to come by if you wait...
