normark auger skipping around...
« on: Jan 28, 2011, 07:00 AM »
Hi, I have a 2 year old auger that has basically been community property for the past year, and has not been particularly well cared for.  When I go to drill a hole now it seems to skip around and have trouble starting out...once it gets going it is ok, I can't imagine the blades are dull yet, is there a chance that one of the blades got banged out of alignment?

Is it the finbore III?  Mine is starting to skip a bit but it is because one of my blades is getting dull, 7 years a n then I cut through a rock last year  >:(  I find that a little extra downward pressure and making sure I am keeping the auger straight up and down helps it bite better.  Good fishin

I'll try it out.  It's a swede bore...I just thought the blades would last longer.

If the blades are sharp but slightly out of pitch just shim them with some thin metal . Even pieces cut from an aluminum pop can will work .

Put the shim so the cutting edge of the blade is tilted down in the ice.

My bet is on dull blades. Even very dull blades seem sharp.
Shaving ice requires extremely sharp blades.

How long do blades usually last?  These are like 2 years old
