now why would you eat that?
« on: Feb 19, 2006, 07:10 PM »
hey guys, I jigged for an hour or so today, and managed a 17 inch rainbow. I brought it home, and when I was cleaning it. rocks started coming out of its stomach. gravel, about the size of a pinky nail.

do rainbow trout eat rocks to help digestive systems?
accidently eat some?
when there is nothing else?

I've seen this in fishing tournaments where the fish are destined to be weighed then released. Sad but true.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

My take on it is that they ingest them while taking forage off the bottom. Cant be good for them huh?

I've seen it, but I forget where. They just suck it up with stuff off the bottom.
I think they can expell it at will too.

OK, OK, I remember where I saw it. Brook Trout with rocks in their guts. I examined the rocks and some of them had half-digested caddis larvae attached. The brook was full of caddis larvae and they were all attached to the well rounded rocks, maybe ~1/2" rocks. When I saw the stuff in the stomach, I realized that they were swallowing the rocks and digesting the larvae right off, then probably expelling the "stripped" rocks.

Makes ya wonder about new lure possibilities. 8)

U always see that with burbot, it is to help with digestion in the burbot.
Could be part of it too.

just yesterday i wittnessed this with some goldfish in a large aquarium that was on display in a resteraunt. The goldfish would suck the rocks in and on the next breath, exhale the rocks.Ill bet they are filtering the smaller mynute food particals and spitting out the useless stuff only to accidentally swallow the rocks.i found a trimmed fingernail in my cabbage roll a week ago.spit it though.

totally unrelated.  but i have seen african ciclids in a fish tank who have the territory divided between them.  sometimes the smarter one will pick up rocks quickly swim into the other ones territory and drop them off all day or week until the rocks pile up and the other fish has less swimmable territory.

It was a pretty neat thing to see.
