white perch question.
« on: Mar 14, 2016, 03:30 PM »
So from reading this forum I discovered white
Perch in lake Champlain this winter.
They are good eating and apparently abundant.
I also read they are in Magog lake as well.
Folks say they want to rid the lakes of them.
My question is more environmental.
Where did these fish come from.??.I can guess
The bilges of ships in the st Lawrence.but
Not sure.but that's where most invasives come from.
And what is it about them that makes folks
Want to rid them from lakes.??
Curious minds want to know.

ok after a google search indicates my initial hypothesis was merely conjecture..
Seems our populations origins come from the hudson river population(mid atlantic)
I found an interesting thesis conducted at uvm. They sampled the genetics of whites from the hudson (champlain barge canal) and the st lawrence (richelieu river) and found our champlain perch migrated from the hudson...Lack of pollution barriers seem to be the probable cause..Go figure we clean up the lake and the hudson river and barge canals and we get invasive species as a reward. :-\ :-\ :'(
.This was a slow migration with the first populations showing up in the early 80s.  alot of the genetic science in this report is beyond me but still an interesting read.

interestingly enough lake Memphremagog population probably comes from the st lawrence being the magog river dumps into the st francois river which in turn dumps into the st lawrence ..
