Walleye trip
« on: Dec 04, 2019, 03:48 PM »
Planning on a trip to lake of the woods over Christmas. Would you go to this lake or is there another lake with a night bite. Looking for a sleeper.

If your specifically looking for a night bite, lake of the woods might not be the best option. I've never fished LOTW, but my understanding of it is the water is very, very stained, which makes finding your bait at night very difficult. You could still catch some fish, of course, but it might be better at other lakes. I'd research some of the other MN "destination" lakes like Leech, Upper Red, Winnibigosh, Mille Lacs, Vermillion, etc.

Other than burbot  the nights are pretty long on LOTW.

I did Lake of the Woods a few years ago, we had a sleeper house in 15ft and a deeper water house for use during the day. In the sleeper house, the bite would start just before sunrise and last for an hour and half or so, then dead sea. Similar in the afternoon evening, it would start about an hour before sunset and last about 30min after sunset, then nothing. We did leave rattle reels down and had 1 bite at 4AM - an 18in walleye but that was the only bite in 2 nights of fishing

My understanding is that Upper Red has a good night bite, I went here one but it was a bad weekend, way too much traffic (New Years eve)

I've spent a few nights on LOW where we got into some walleye, but it's not super common.  Usually it's a full moon period with a house on structure.  We did really well a few times on 16 mile.

Red lake is more productive in the day.  Mille Lacs and Lake Minnewaska are the go tos for night bite; however the restrictions for Mille Lacs are over the top (only one walleye) but sometimes worth it for catch and release.
