**** Basic Windbreak - On the cheap *****
« on: Nov 06, 2008, 07:00 PM »
First prototype used auger for the pole's holes (too big, no support)..

Second prototype with correct diameter holes for the support poles..

With larger 10 foot tarp....

And my fav, Tarpus maximus....

- I reckon' -

we have been using 1inch conduit , 3  = 6 ft lengths , 2  = 6 by 8 tarps , we weld washers 1 foot from the bottom ( to prevent from sliding down the whole when thin ice) an at the brass grommet locations to fasten with good rope. it rolls up nice ,an i carry a cordless drill with a 1 inch bit, the more guys that bring there's the bigger the wind break.
How are the edges ?

Not too shaby! You might consider trying black tarps to use some of that bright sun to your advantage  ;)

Well done, Jed!  Nice to see yet another fellow OFN'er on here  :)   We definitely have to meet up for some hardwater action this winter  -- if only so that I can see exactly how that windbreak works   ::)
The harder the better!

Great idea! When i was about 15 and didnt have the luxury of a shelter one day when the snow was really wet and packy me and a friend made a snow fort about 6'x6' by 5.5feet high, and stuck reflectors and flagging tape all over it, that night it froze and we had  damn fine windbreak for most of the season, kept it shoveled out and everything
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!
