Cuba Lake 2017/2018
« on: Dec 27, 2017, 05:07 PM »
Reported today, several guys out there. Usually the south shore firms up first but offshore areas could need to be tested first.
You can not take too many perch, unless you can not clean them, give them to your friends and neighbors to clean and cook. The more perch you take, the faster and bigger the rest  will grow. The walleyes and bass will survive from fry to fingerlings.

Park by the dam, fish anywhere!

Got a feeling you’re gonna leave disappointed. I’d be surprised if you caught more than a handful of fish. Good luck

Has the fishing not been good on Cuba lately? Iv always heard it was pretty good. That's why I was going to drive an hour to try. Should I rethink?

Look at the reports on reports and conditions thread. Struggling at Cuba is a reoccurring theme. I’ve never done well there and I’ve put in countless hours. Just my 2 cents

There are fish in there. It's just a struggle some times. Fishing is not what it was years ago

There is a earthen dike on the Southeast end of the lake that most people call the dam.  At the southwest end of this dike on South Lake Rd is a state parking lot that holds a few cars.  At the Southwest end of the lake there is a spillway on the Indian reservation that gets opened each year to lower the lake and there is only a creek bed remaining at the spillway.  Some guys refer to this as the dam, so when you hear someone refer to the dam or spillway ask which end of the lake.

Cuba Lake was built to supply water for the Genesee Valley Canal that went from Rochester to the Allegany River. Rawson Creek is its main water supply and source of nutrients for the fish. The earthen dam on the Eastern end holds the water for the canal that was abandoned after the railroads took over the canal banks along Route 19. The control dam is a flood safety device to protect Olean area residents in the spring melts. The high elevation causes it to freeze over first in Western New York. First and last ice are the best fishing conditions there till Silver Lake freezes up a week later. Coneseus Lake freezes another week later. This year is unusual as most lakes are frozen due to the below zero weather so early and long.

Fished Cuba Friday and Sunday, Friday only pulled one 30" Pike on the tip ups and had 1 short hit, caught one 8" Gill out in 20 fow. Sunday we lost one big northern at the hole, two short hits on the tip ups, and a handful of dink perch. Kinda disappointed, usually early ice is the best there but now I remember why I don't fish Cuba that much anymore..

Some unique stomach contents .. ice was fine once you got on. The shore was in rough shape. Those 1st few steps are a doozy .. Pay attention .. or you may end up wet to your shins ??

caught alot perch in that lake with small craws in them over the years,  was a go to bait . Artificial craws works well sometimes and dependent on where your fishing in the lake  ;)

Scott and I plied the lake for a final time Sunday. Weather drove us off at lunchtime and even though it cleared of course once we got to shore, we did look back but didn't go back. Our gear was blowing all over the lake. The inlet area was wide open when I took a last lap on the way out. Things regarding the ice quality/quantity are bad and getting worse. Its not looking good for the rest of the historically recognized ice fishing season but ya never know .. ??
