The DEC website does not say car top only but it looked like that type of launch to me. I don't see why it wouldn't be open 24x7.

It is a really nice place to access the pond.

hopefully all the rotten ice got destroyed before the lake effect hit, at this point its better to start all over as much as it sucks. The pond needs a new start.

Hey folks. A few friends and I are coming from Northeast PA the weekend of Feb. 11. I've heard there is zero ice at this point on Sandy pond. I've also fished south Colwell Pond in the past. Just wondering if anyone thinks it will be safe anywhere or maybe we will need a crash course on steelhead fishing! Haha

Not sure how the ice is but I can tell you I could see open water from my house on wigwam dr Saturday and we got pounded with lake effect yesterday not a good combo. I would look to the far north where they didn't get the snow.

I am deeply saddened by the news that boggey will no longer be posting his wonderful stories and updates from around the pond. I was hoping to meet him at some point this year maybe our paths will still cross!?

As for ice I have been checking the wigwam regularly after work this week and from what I can tell there is some holdover ice from before the melt around the rock pile (which will be of poor quality). Also looks like what might have been a very large opening in front of the launch about 150 yards out with some fresh black ice forming in it since it had a dusting of snow on it. You can still see that it looks significantly darker than the surrounding ice. I personally did not go on the ice because I have a little birdslayer due to be born in July and Mrs. Birdslayer has threatened legal action if I do!!! Everyone knows you don't mess with a pregnant woman! I did notice that it looked as if someone ventured out a little ways through the snow.... anyone have some insight on that? I'M NOT SAYING TRY IT!!! Just curious if that person is on here and what they found out....

The rock pile was terrible ice before the two week thaw, if anyplace on the pond needed to blow apart it was the rock pile. Mother Nature what did we do to deserve this? It may be a while for Sandy pond

I too will miss JBoggey, his informative posts and admonition to SPUD, SPUD, SPUD were welcome additions to this site.

For those who may have missed it, the obituary for Mark Pierkowski, one of our two ice-fishing brothers who lost their lives on Sandy Pond, was in the Syracuse Post-Standard on Sunday.  It asked that "In lieu of flowers, please donate to any wildlife foundation or your local animal shelter".  I never met Mark or his fishing partner, Arthur Connors, but I am going to be making a donation in their names.

Be safe out there folks.

Took a spin to look at the pond this morning...as soon as I got close the snow started. By the time I got to the wig wam it was white out conditions. Couldn't see out onto the pond at all. Called Greene point they said they'll have someone come down over the weekend to check the conditions but with the amount of snow they were getting its looking a little bleak.

pretty much straight out of the ramp. It's a good sized rock pile.....roughly 0.2 mile from the ramp. Google Navionics web app.... you'll see the rock pile hazard area!!!

Just did a lap around the pond before the pregame festivities kick in and heres what I saw,

Wigwam they plowed a huge pile of snow blocking access to the water for anything other than ambitious mountain climbers! No one in site or tracks in the snow!

State access on Stanley is nice and cleaned out but no cars in the lot and again they piled up the snow in front of the access ramp... I'm sensing a pattern here! No tracks in the snow either.

The Elms no one in the parking lot and no tracks to the pond.... again no one in sight!!

My guess everyone went north or decided to stay home and pregame early!! Time for me to do the same cheers!!

Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: KingPerch on Feb 12, 2017, 07:23 PM
A trusting bluebird told me that there is 16-18" of total crap on the pond. As of yesterday, 6-8" of snow on top, 5-6"of slush underneath, with 5-6" or so of what was called crap ice. With no black solid ice to be found. Guys are fishing the pond, yes. That's all I'm going to report!! This person spudded and drilled holes for observation purposes only!!! Not to mislead anyone into heading onto the pond to fish!! You guys were wondering the conditions, this is what I've been told!! 😎
Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: Birdslayer on Feb 12, 2017, 07:54 PM
Thanks for the reports guys!! All that crap ice makes me nervous, people get a false sense of security when they see multiple people out on the ice! I'll be using my spud frequently IF I decide to venture out next weekend!! Also, I have next week off 20th-24th (I'm a teacher) and I plan on fishing every day next week. With the ice on the pond the way it is....IF it's safe and anyone is going out and wants a fishing partner send me a PM! Safety in numbers and with a little one coming in July I promised my wife I wouldn't venture out alone!

Thanks trapper!!! I'm looking forward to passing on what I have learned to the next generation! Kids these days don't get that going out of your way to help a friend isn't really going out of your way, it's the right thing to do! Just like picking up someone else's trash is a responsibility that we all share and if you catch someone being a slob it's also our responsibility to tell them!! I'll do what I can to make my little one an active, responsible and respectful members of society!! Not a pulse less couch toad or video game zombie!! Sorry for the rant....long day at work!! Haha

I fished the Pond with my 4 year old son this morning. We had 8" of ice with maybe 6" of packed snow on top. We kept 15 decent perch and threw back the usual 100 dinks. We had a good time and the weather was nice.

Stanley Drive. There is some slush in the channel going to the Pond.

Also, I would be very careful accessing at Stanley drive as the temperature goes up in the next few days. We will start getting more run off. Blind creek dumps into the Pond there and that area will become unsafe quickly.

As usual be cautious and SPUD SPUD SPUD!

It’s locked up, looks like jam ice though.  Didn’t check thickness of ice as I didn’t expect it to be locked up!  Anyway got too much going on till after Christmas anyway. But bought a bunch of bright shiney new jigs! I stopped by montario point to check ice, there was a guy stuck in a mini van that I pulled out, he said there was 4 inches there, but I didn’t verify just what he said.  Maybe after the couple warm days this week melting some snow, there will be ice after Christmas!

probably about 2 or 3 foot of snow on the pond now I'm guessing.....I had to drive up from Mexico to watertown yesterday to turn my car into the body shop. Hit whiteout conditions with tons of snow from sandy creek to adams. various vehicles off in the ditch and backed up traffic so I took Route 3 back down to mexico, Complete whiteout right around greenpoint, 2-3 foot of snow in the road. I had to completely stop for about 5 minutes praying I didn't get hit. finally started clearing up after I passed the wigwam exit on 3. The snow slowly worked its way south during the middle of the night, ended up with around 2 foot in Mexico this morning. So with that being said, there is more than likely a ton of snow on the pond, I guess at least 2 foot.....

Fulton not so much, The Pond got a ton. Oneida is better off than the Pond this year. I took a trip to Fair Haven this morning and cut a couple holes to check it out. The wind was howling, blew me off the ice. I will write a report on the Fair Haven reports and conditions  page.

Couple friends of mine fished in front of wigwam couple days ago. The drag out was horrible...knee deep snow with slush underneath that. 4-5” of ice. I didn’t ask what kind of ice it was. They brought home a dozen perch each, enough for a decent meal. Be careful if you venture out. Spud, spud, spud!!!😎

Yo Guys & Gals,

After getting nearly skunked on Oneida Saturday with my good bud Cusefan, I am looking forward to hitting the Pond again. I can always put a dozen or so perch in my bucket and usually a slime log or 2. Not to mention , most people are used to me belting out an old Rolling Stones song or 2 on the Pond. Not so on Oneida, somehow I feel inhibited there. I expect to hear from Stu and the girls soon, FishTank, John, Orange Crush, Cap'n Hook, BigBuck and Vince, Townsey,Trap ,Chief, GoonBoy, Teri, Paulene, Clam man, , jperch, Perryt  KP and Josh, Reeleyz, Joefish, Wayne, Fishforpike, DD and Lisa, cho cho, Red Head fisherwoman, BigSunny, Hinkydo, Freddy ,Hacket, PC, Dallas, Cuse ,Old Timer, Icejohn and many more I have failed to mention.   My bud Jigger is down for a couple of days with the sicky poos. TommyBoy is making more beer brats. We got some more cold temps coming and I think we are going to have a great year on the Pond. I am looking forward to seeing you all this year, old friends and new.

Stop by the "Honey Hole" and say hi. I hope you all have a.....
Great and Happy New Year 2018

Yo Larry,

Indeed a bummer. I wanted to spend my B'day on the Pond. Cusefan took me out on Oneida again today and this time we caught some of them Walleyes you guys been talking about. We got 4 nice eaters, missed more than we got above the ice and returned a lot of shorts back through the ice hole. My first walleyes  through the ice this season. My 2 had shoulders and Cuse's were suffering from malnutrition ;)2 ;)2 ;)2.

I have to hit the Pond on Saturday before my friend TommyBoy ships out. Boy we are looking at some cold daytime temps Satrurday. I will follow Jigger's tracks to make it an easier drag, haha.

You can follow my tracks anytime buddy I had another good day today , off to  Syracuse to take my wife to pt.The weather is not looking good for Friday and Saturday more snow and wind. For all you guys with wheelers there are still slush pockets out there from Stanley drive.Walkers should have an good walk, cudos to everyone parking at Stanley drive the parking lot is clean and no garbage.
Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: New Old Guy on Jan 04, 2018, 07:22 PM
Yo Guys & Gals,

Decided today would most likely be my best opportunity to hit the pond with the temperature being a balmy 19 degrees and all. I got a late start arriving at noon. While the wind was predicted to be howling it wasn't all that bad. I accessed the Pond at the Stanley Drive ramp and as Jigger mentioned , the parking area was well plowed and free of garbage and debris. I noticed on my way out the ruts and refrozen slush left by the four wheelers as jigger had mentioned. . Directly in front of me a lone ice fisherman was observed heading out on his four wheeler and he had no such problem on his way out as most of those slush areas had refrozen. The ice mat had frequent snow drifts with  clean wind swept ice areas in between. I dragged the small jiffy sled  with a pail, bait and an auger + my 2 jigging rods. Light traveling still a good work out for the New Old Guy.

I settled into an area of the Pond my friend Jigger had scoped out for me. First hole I cut, over 12 inches of ice ( that's the depth of my ice scoop handle) and I couldn't dip the handle down enough to catch the hook on the underside of the ice without getting my hand wet, suffice to say, it was over 12"s of crunch and hard ice.  I dropped my yellow willow jig tipped with a half dozen spikes and had a hard hit before the jig even hit the bottom. First perch was a 9 incher. Four more followed all 8 inches + . I was quickly joined by an old friend "Chuck" from Pulaski, another septuagenarian I have fished with in years past. After exchanging pleasantry's he and I cut a few additional holes and continued the onslaught. Rebaiting the spikes proved to be painful due to the cold wind. I opted to switch to perch eyes as Chuck was using and we continued to fill our pails with perch.

About an hour of this and I had 18 nice Sandy Pond perch, 2 of which were 12 inches jumbos and most in the order of 9-10 inch range. Chuck was doing equally well and soon left me as  the bite diminished. He had caught 18 or so prior to my entry on the pond and added quite a few before he left. I continued with the slow bite for another hour and yielded another half dozen and decided the hands were taking a beating without the warmth of my flip. It was time to get home and clean my catch. That's what I am about to do now. I will not be out Friday or Saturday. The temperatures with wind chills for both days are -20's. That's serious damage to your exposed skin guys & gals. I know I am getting older and probably a bit of a wuss, but sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. We are going to have a good long Ice fishing season this winter and I can wait till Monday when temperatures are supposed to bounce back up to near 30 degrees. .

Hey, one and all, stay safe out there and SPUD SPUD SPUD. Boggey

Yo Guys & Gals,

Fished the Pond today with my bud Bob. As a B'day present, Bob decided to bring his 4 wheeler to save us a long laborious drag out and back. That was my first mistake. It brought to mind the reason I sold my wheeler last year. We got stuck in the heavy snow over ice umpteen times. We spent about 2 hours just getting to the Honeyhole. To get unstuck I cut a hole or 2 and wrapped his winch  cable around the handle of my nils auger. That was my second mistake . Bent the shaft above the fins to make it nearly inoperable. Note , I said nearly. When we got there  I still managed to cut some holes with my now bent nils.

The wind made for a tough set up and had to use the ice anchors to strap the new Shappell down. The beginning bite was great, accept we couldn't catch anything over 6 inches. Still we  persevered and struggled to keep 21 perch for pour days efforts. All in all it was a hard day, but the kind of day you could take solace in the fact you managed to make something out of a bad day. Truly a "fishing" day. As I mentioned, there were several others who probably regretted bringing out there wheelers . Snow machine was the mode of travel this day. not 4 wheelers.

I got to see Jigger on the way out. He had been fishing only yards from us but never saw him till he was leaving and sure enough, he was mired in about a foot of snow. Not the Birthday celebration I had planned, but sure beats the alternative of sitting home watching tv. Got to know my friend Bob a whole lot better sitting in a Shanty for 5 hours. Opting not to try to drag me and the shanty back to the Stanley ramp. Bob was lucky enough to get the unladdened wheeler back with out incident and I started the long drag back on foot. Alls well that ends well. Back home  I arrived to an ongoing B'day party surrounded by family and friends. On an up note, I am cleaning perch directly after this post and getting ready for another great day on the ice tomorrow with my bud Jperch at Fair Haven and trust me, no 4 wheelers.

Be advised, if today was bad for 4 wheelers on the pond , the remainder of the week will surely turn the 8 or 12 inches of snow overburden into slush . Let's take another look at conditions after this weeks warming and rain events. I will be back on Saturday for my next report. For now, looking for shorter drags my friends.

We came up to the Pond for the weekend. Just walked out with spud and hand auger off near Elms. Shoreline was a little shaky, a few funky looking spots but drilled 6 holes and found about 8" in all of them. There was a group of 6 or 8 shantys near where I was. If you go out tomorrow, use caution, but we will fish tomorrow. Not much water on top either.

Went off Elms today. Fished the honeyhole, about 20 keepers over 10”. Walk out was prefect, as the snow sleds have made a nice hard packed trail.

Post by: New Old Guy on Jan 21, 2018, 04:18 AM
Yo Guys & Gals,

Accessed the Pond from the Wig-Wam yesterday (SAT). Didn't get out till noon. The parking lot was full. Cars parked on the side of the road all the way back out to the main road. A quick view from the top of the ramp, I witnessed about 200 other shanties and as many pail sitters had decided The Pond was the place to be yesterday. The drag down the ramp was easy, if you can picture this old guy trying to run along side his shanty as it barreled down the ramp, Thank God for one bare section that acted like a brake, preventing me from being dragged down the ramp by my own shanty (on a smitty).

Let's continue. There were multiple wet trenches at the bottom of the ramp from the 4 wheelers. Not too deep but you could get your foot wet if not careful. The snow cover on top of the ice was variable zero to 5 inches snow drifts at some places. By late afternoon the snow had become heavier and much of it was turning into slush. All in all with the smitty, the drag was not too laborious.I trudged out toward center ice (exact location not given) and found enumerable people all over my former "Honey Hole" . Being the gregarious fellow that I am , I engaged in conversation with the group of men from Baldwinsville and tested how comfortable they would be with my entry into their enclave. Great guys, "sure , join us" . I settled in a respectful 50 feet or so from their pre cut holes and soon discovered I was not far off the mark . At least for that day. With in the first hour I had accumulated about 10 nice keepers while sorting through tons of dinks I might mention. Typical Sandy Pond fare eh? All the while bantering with my new found friends. Now I'm not going to tell you all their names and how many children each of them had , but suffice to say we became fast friends by the time they left and I then took over their pre-cut holes. (pre-cut saves a lot of arm twisting on us old guys don't you know.) Now a full fledged hole hopper, I tested their holes with scant luck, with the exception of one 25 inch slime log on my 4# test line and losing my favorite cream green willow jig to another slime log. I finished the next hour out keeping a total of 21 good sized perch. A testament to their size is they were enough to fill 2 freezer bags after cleaning. A follow up to the ice thickness, as I only cut one hole, the thickness at that location was 12 inches with 4 inches of white ice over dark ice.

Now, the temperature was above 40 degrees all afternoon. The sun was shining . The wind occasionally gusted up to 10-15  mph. but was a premo ice fishing day for this old geezer.  The drag back in was a bit easier as much of the snow had melted and the snow was more dense and the smitty dragged over it with ease. Till I got to the ramp. The wheel tracks at the bottom of the ramp had deepened and I took a circuitous route toward the dock and all that untraveled snow turned to slush with my weight. Then the drag up the ramp was much rougher than the slide down the ramp (obviously) The ramp terrain had become 60% bare from the melt and travel of pedestrians and machines . So, in short I got to say, it was  a good day to be out enjoying one of God's  blessings. One word of advise for those venturing out today. Beware of the continuing degradation of the ice mat and be mindful of how fast it can change over night in warm weather. Be safe out there and as always Spud Spud Spud

 Boggey

Post Script: My normal disclaimer, These are the ice conditions I witnessed at the locations I accessed. They are not to be construed as an endorsement of conditions on the entire pond. Individual accesses should be evaluated accordingly. It might be nice if you were to post the conditions where you accessed if different than mine. It might also be nice if some  thoughtful persons were to shovel some of the banked snow on to the ramp area for us old geezers. Just an after thought.

Green point was not as full, but there were  2 to 3 x the numbers from last few weekends. Again for me and many others the bite was tough on the north side and we only managed a dozen keepers between 4 of us. Little action from the dinks to keep us busy. No pike flags that I saw all day in my eyeshot. Many others around me had the same luck. Great day lots of kids out so I call it a success.  Conditions were as stated above, but the shore mushy, keep to the ramp.

Yo Guys & Gals,

Another beautiful day on the Pond. Again accessed from the Wig-Wam ramp. To my surprise, someone did shovel some snow on the ramp. Thank you, although with the days temperature and the machine use it had  again wore off by the evening drag back in. Today I brought my eldest son for the first time this year and I invited one of our newest Ice shanty members Glug to come with us. While Glug is an IS newby, he is not a beginner Ice fisherman. A delightful young witty fellow and a joy to fish with. I hope to spend more time with him on the ice in the ensuing years.

Again, my son and I had a relatively good bite day, sorting threw a bunch of dinks to keep our 38 count of perch. Jeff, (Glug) did similarly well sorting through dinks in order to bring back 20 at the last count of fresh perch for a dinner with his wife and 2 children. Yo Clint, sorry to hear of your low bite over at Green Point. You should come over to the "Dark Side" my friend. Yo Stu, sorry i missed you again. We were having too much fun to pick up and search for you my friend. I am sure we will get together some time this winter. Let's hope the ice holds up through this weeks warming spell and we will have a long and safe ice fishing season. Like maybe fishing in our T-shirts in April. Hey, a guy can dream can't he?

While the snow on top was turning to slush I still had 10 inches of ice under me at my location still out from the ramp at Wig-Wam in 12 fow. All of yesterdays holes were still open so we didn't have to cut any new holes. That made it easy to do a lot of hole hopping. The drag was tolerable especially since my son did all the tugging haha. The wet spot at the bottom of the ramp is getting ever larger and deeper. Be careful at that point. We used fatheads and perch eyes today, switching back and forth as the bite demanded. Took my nap when I got home, got to go clean some fish now.

As usual, this report is only relevant to the direct area of the Pond that I attended today and as such does not constitute nor imply safe conditions on any other areas of the Pond.

Be safe everyone and as the ice deteriorates be aware of the changing conditions. Don't forget to bring your spud and spud spud spud.

Had a great Sunday, thanks again Jim, greatly appreciated. As mentioned, just an awesome day to be out, good weather, plenty of ice and spent with family. The sleds made for an easy ride/drag out but I am guessing the edges have opened up at this point to use them for a while. Sorry I missed you Jim, I sent you a text during the day, however I later found that I had the wrong number, but then again, like you, we were having so much fun and the bite was on so I didn't venture over to find you. Next time!! Sorted through several dinks but we all managed to bring home more than our share. Be safe with this warm weather!!

PS  Jim I sent you another text, this time I believe too the correct number ;D

Yo Stu,

We will for sure get some ice time together this year. The water pools over the ice from the last few days will freeze back over locking the ice mat back up again for today , tonight and tomorrow. All good indicators we will have some good lasting ice well into spring this year. Thursday and Friday are going to be phenomenal weather days provided the snow cover remains minimal. I hope we can get together when Tommy Boy gets back from diesel training school eh? I think he gets back next week and I heard through the grapevine, he has a new beer brats recipe. Sounds like a cook out on the ice my friend. All is good.

Yo Josh,

Yes indeed "King of the Pond", It was a great day we had on the ice with our little impromptu , unofficial , dollar anti. "King of the Pond" fish derby that day. In talks with several of my buds ,we are considering doing the same this year. With all the great ice we have, hopefully we can work a day in between some of the other Tournaments and Derbies scheduled for the Pond this year.

More importantly, thank you for the pictures and the post on your "little brown eyed beauty"  She is all of that and then some. Your post exemplifies the great traditions iceshanty and the general ice fishing community wish to sustain. You are doing your part "Dad".  Congratz for putting a lifetime of possibilities in front of her other than a "Gameboy" or "X box".

I hope you will  find the time to come to Sandy Pond again to defend your title and maybe , maybe transfer the title to your Little "Brown eyed beauty" Of course we will have to change the title to Queen or Princess of the Pond eh?

Post Script: Klino did contribute his winnings to the Sandy Creekd Fire Deptment.  last year, sufficiently happy to bear the title . "King of the Pond" If I recall correctly, it was a nice fat 12 and 3/4 inch slob.

Yo Guys & Gals,

My fishing bud TommyBoy came back to the Pond after a 3 week absence due to diesel training. I hope he is smart enough next year not to schedule his training during peak ice fishing season eh?  Anyway, let me continue. Tommy Boy brought one of his 10th Mountain buddies with him, Glenn. The 3 of us struck out from the Wig-Wam parking lot . The parking lot and the ramp are all bare stone and black top so for you draggers, if you want to save the bottom of your tubs and sleds, you might just be wise to back your vehicle down the ramp and drop your load off at the bottom. (just a suggestion) try not to tie up the ramp as others may wish to do the same.

Back to the short story. Tommy's return to the ice was some what short of triumphant as between the 3 of us , we didn't manage a 100 keepers. By this time of year we both usually have our freezers full of perch. Not so this year for Tommy Boy with his training and all. I did offer to give him some of my stock, but he insisted on setting up his tip downs to catch his share of the perch bounty.

After catching the first perch over 8 inches and the dollar bet, It was all down hill from there on for Tommy Boy. . Old Boggey was putting on a clinic. A classic pail sitting, hole hopping clinic I tell you. All the while poor Tommy Boy chasing them tip downs from one end of the pond to the other in a despairing attempt to keep up with the New Old Guy. Well, unless I say too much, suffice to say Tommy Boy, red faced and beaten, soldiered on and acquitted himself admirably.

Now let me close with: When you are fishing with the "New Old Guy", there is my truth and every other slanderous tale one might tell of the same encounter. Who you going to trust eh?

Lastly, It was nice meeting Glenn. Go 10th Mountain. Hope to see some more of our military men and women out on the ice. Tite Lines and stay safe out there.

had a great day on the Pond with New old Guy.  been hard to sit in a classroom in Indiana the past 3 weeks watching all the excitement and stories on here.  We made out fairly well yesterday. I got to do all the cleaning and deboning. took a few minutes.  Had some nice ones, as well as some short ones.  I generally will keep them if they are 8 inches or better,  But Jim tends to keep them at 5 inches or better, so those were a little tough to clean....Anyway, awesome to be back home and spend the first full day back with my good friend New Old Guy!

Klino, good for you! As my profile says, "Start 'em young." My 3 daughters have all grown up enjoying the ice, probably more so for dad, but as the New Guy said, they grow up quickly. But I would like to share when my eldest was in town this past weekend from college she was asking when the next time we are going to camp to fish, "any Derbies Dad? Can we go up in 2  weeks when I come home?" Made me one proud papa!!  All 3 have always participated in the local Pond Derbies throughout their childhood and as they all are very involved with sports, sometimes getting them on the ice is tough.  However, they always seem to make time for dad a few times each winter. These are memories that will be talked about for years.
Tommy, glad to hear you're back and had such a good day with the New Guy Sunday. Kinda mean sending pictures like that while I'm working though :)  Hooah! Not sure on plans for the weekend, might be staying in Rochacha to pay back a charter friend of mine that I mate for in the summer as he wants to try the hard water.  We shall see.  Have a good week all and be safe!

Yo Jigger,

Great news on the great grand daughter.  My grand daughter popped the news on Poppy , I am going to have my third great grand child in July and my youngest son , with the help of his wife of course is going to make me a Grand Pa again. Ain't life grand.

On the other hand , sorry to hear you went back to work and are now relegated to "Week End Warrior" status Jigger.  ;D ;D  At any rate , I am sure we will bump into one another on the Pond my friend.

More disconcerting news, my long time fishing bud Tommy Boy is again deploying to the middle east . for the 5th time I believe. I guess I should be grateful we got to fish together last week end. I am sure there will be many more winters for my young friend and I to cut some ice together, but still sad to see such a truncated season for Tommy Boy on one of the best years the Pond has seen in several seasons. I know I am grateful for his service to his country as he has served in the Marine Corp, the Army and now the DOD. I am grateful for the service of all  our young men and women who serve. As we enjoy our many freedoms and past times, let us keep them in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless them and protect them till they return.

Lastly, my Sweet-Rita is back home and recovering from her most recent surgery and I again thank the Lord for all of the prayers and best wishes from my ice fishing friends and family. I am taking a brief hiatus from the ice , ostensibly to do a little home care. You know that will last till her first "Will you get the heck out of here and go fishing or something". During the meantime someone keep giving me them reports will ya?

Ahh, so nice to be able to get out on the ice 2 days in a row, and what made it even better was able to hook up with Jigger.  Long time coming as we always seemed to miss each other, come to find out we were about 100 yds away from each other all day.  Nice to meet you Jigger, I'm sure we will be out again sooner than later.  I had some venison I had planed on cooking up but the wind wouldn't allow it! Next time.  Saturday was a rough day as the snowmobile ignition was froze and because I was anxious, I made the drag instead out of the Wigwam, bad idea. Amazing how the wind changes from land to ice. Tough drag as there was about 4-5" of snow on top of very smooth ice, finally got set up and found that after loaning out my auger that the blades were trashed upon return, Ugg. Sorted through many dinks to get a meal.  Sunday the weather still a bit breezy but not quite as bad, plus I had my sled back. With brother-in-law in tow we had a pretty decent day. Again sorting though several dinks early on but we were able to bring home several sizable fish.  Jigger and I were commenting on the size of fish this year and the numbers.  A good year so far.  Back at it next weekend for a couple Derbies.  Hopefully catch up with a few other IS regulars then. (By then the old new guy will be pushed out of the house to, so maybe we will see him) Hopefully that wind takes a break, will have one of my daughters with me and don't want to scare her away. ::)    Have a great week and be safe!!

Yo Stu,

Exactly as you have stated. Sweeta-Rita has gotten tired of my care giving. "Please, please go fishing and give me a break" she says. So with that plea from my sweet wife, I will be joining my buds on the ice for one or more of the derbies this week end. Not sure if we can do double entry. I am doing a check to see. I got to see if TommyBoy can get out. He has a lot of last minute "honey do" items to take care of before he deploys. I hope he can bring Julia with him. She's a better fisherperson than him anyway, well, a whole lot prettier that's for sure.  ;)2 ;)2

Post by: New Old Guy on Feb 06, 2018, 11:16 PM
Yo Guys & Gals

Fished the Pond yesterday with my friend tool miester. It was going to be an "easy day" because my bud tool miester had a sled and despite the snow and blow or perhaps because of it we should have a fun day. Now my friend tool meister we will now call Bob.bought a used snow machine and he had checked it out by running it endless hours around his farm before dragging me out on the ice with him. At first all went well as we accessed from the Wig-wam ramp all covered with newly fallen fresh fluffy, wind blown snow, about 6 to 10 inches of it depending on which drift you were assaulting. As I said all was doing well with Bob, me and the fully ladened Shappel bounding along our way to the "honey hole". This nirvana lasted all but 200 yards from shore before the motor to the ski do started to lug down and puke out on us. Assuming we were putting to much strain on the motor i hopped off and Bob restarted the ski do and continued dragging the fully laden ed Shappell out to the "honey hole" by himself with the intent of dropping it off and coming back for me. Well, don't you know , the machine again develops a puke when he gets out nearly to the "Honey hole" and I can see the writing on the wall. I continue my assault on foot, in part,  glad because I am not dragging my fully ladened Shappell behind me in the fresh fallen and wind blown snow.

Finally arriving at the relocated Shappell, somewhat short of the honey hole, standing in about 8 inches of freshly fallen snow , with 20 mile an hour winds howling about our head and ears, we opt to set up the Shappell and try to enjoy the rest of our now wind swept, snow bound adventure, by hunkering down in the wind buffeted , but warm Shappell and start doin what we do best. catching perch.

Yup, right from the beginning, our new hole cut, somewhat short of the honey hole, started to produce. Slowly at first, with a few dead intervals here and there , but with a one to ten keeper ratio we managed to stay busy. All this time the wind was picking up in speed and ferocity. We did consider cutting some holes for our tip downs, but a brief trip outside the confines of the Shappell and a hole that filled with wind swept snow in less than 2 minutes proved this attempt to be futile. Settling back into the confines of the  Shappell , dinning on the snacks provided by my partner, Bob, we continued our onslaught to reduce the perch population on the Pond. For you aspiring writers that last phrase is called alliteration . A classic eh?

Our fish count was adding up, to the point we had to start counting our keep, ever fearful of how we were going to get our shanty and machine back to the now invisible shore line. By now, 3:30 pm , the snow and blow was at its apex. Now Tool miester is not the kind of guy to give up easily and he first ventures out into the cold to see if the machine had perhaps just flooded out. Lifting the hood of the Ski do he examines a loose plug wire and makes 2 pulls to get the machine running again. All is looking good now, so old Boggey strikes the Shappell and loads all the fishing gear and the newly gained 78 seven strippers, ready for the pull back in. Fearing a repeat of the trip out I tell Tool Miester to drag the Shappell only and I will walk on behind. Tool Miester says "drag where? I can't see my hand in front of me"

This brings about another safety item I have omitted my friends, we did not have a compass between the 2 of us. However, using the direction of the wind off our right shoulder and short intervals of visual clarity Tool Meister did make it back to the ramp. Well, almost back to the ramp where he left the fully ladened Shappell with the now added weight of a  pail of perch to venture back out in the wind storm to find Old Boggey. This attempt was derailed when his machine again puked about 200 yards from shore where I found him working on his machine on my way back to the ramp.  Now faced with the task of dragging that "fully ladened shappell with the full pail of fish" up the ramp now covered with 10 inches of freshly fallen and wind swept snow, old Boggey began the final assault up the beaches, up the ramp and finally to the parking lot when I hear the ring ding ding of the winding motor of the Ski do racing past me to Tool miesters truck.

Ah yes! It was just that kind of an "Easy Day" for old Boggey and the Tool Miester.  Tool Miester and I settled onto a bar stool at Eddies Cove restaurant to enjoy a beer and a burger where we regaled Louise with the details of our "Easy Day" out on the Pond.

Post Script:  The conditions as I mentioned were brutal but satisfying. The holes we cut all witnessed 12 inches+ of ice. We have 2 fishing derbies this week end and don't forget to register Friday evening or sooner. I hope to have a great week end on the Pond. and I forgot to mention, Bob doesn't like my singing    haha.

Hey boggey, im sad to say i probably wont be at the tournament this year. We just rescued a puppy from Alabama so our hands are pretty full taking care of this little guy. I am however sending up a darn good basket of gear with a Fenwick Elite rod for SCFD to raffle off.

Well wishes to all who get out this weekend, please go see my good friends at the Sandy Creek Fire Department Derby and even if you dont catch the big one they sure have some good raffles.

Post by: New Old Guy on Feb 08, 2018, 11:01 AM
Yo TommyBoy,

Let me tell you a story about that "Smart Phone " you were referencing. I had a lot of problems with that last year. It seems when I wanted to end a call, the phone would not "end call".  I couldn't even end the call by powering off.  The HLN program I purchased the phone through apparently had a program that determined how much time they wanted to penalize you for before they allowed you to discontinue your call. I found myself paying for 5 to 6 minutes for each call even if it was not a connected call. This became very frustrating, watching my paid for prescription time just wane away at the whim of the phone suppliers discretion. It came to a head last year as I was trying to end a call and watched the phone eat up 10 minutes for a call that didn't even get connected.

I was livid. Livid to the point, I accidentally stepped on the phone in the parking lot at Stanley (seven times) , accidentally mind you .Well that's the story I told my wife.  I might have omitted the part about (seven times). I guess that "smart" phone was too smart for me , so I reverted back to the old flip phone again, the one I now use, the one that ain't a whole lot smarter than me. I'm sure there is a moral to this story, not quite sure what that would be, but I have kept this crushed "Smart" phone in the bottom of my tip down bag as a monument to my stupidity and resistance to any technological change.  Lest you disbelieve me not, next time we are out , ask me to show you the accidentally crushed smart phone I still carry in the bottom of my tip down bag. In closing my friend, the flip ain't got no apps or maps . It just makes phone calls and turns off when I hit "end call".  :cookoo:

I sent you a pm yesterday morning but I think it was a little late to get together. I went off the Wigwam to an undisclosed location and caught a nice limit in about 3hrs. Drag out not bad about 2inch with some drifts. The way back in was a different story!! Snow up to the knees and very little visibility needless to say the drag was brutal. Amazing how much weight a limit of perch can add the the sled!! Fortunately I did have a compass thanks to Jimmy at salmon river sports! He hooked me up before I went out knowing the visibility was going to be low. I normally use my phone as a GPS for tracking my movement but in this case I didn't want to rely solely on technology to get me off the ice safe. All in all it was a nice day off and I was back at the daycare by noon to pick up little birdslayer! He got his first training on how to fillet a perch... had to do it when the wife wasn't around. For some reason she thinks 6 months is too early for him to watch his dad clean fish! She was wrong as I suspected.... although I won't say that directly too her! Haha He loved the noise of the electric knife and was very curious of the things going on and all movements while I made short work of a 50 fish limit. I'm originally from jefferson county where it's unlimited so cleaning 50 is dare I say.... child's play!!?? Bad joke I know but had to do it!

 Yo Clint,

They are called a fresh water herring and directly related to that species. They are similarly boney. I caught many of them last year in deeper waters off of Cherry Island and elected to bring 2 of them home and tried to smoke them. I over smoked them, actually baked them in my smoker so I can't tell you how tasty they were. I can confirm they were boney. .

There is an interesting discussion on the Cisco population in Lake Ontario waters. led by 2 of our Iceshanty contributors,  commandercisco and Lucky 13, two gentlemen specifically knowledgeable about this species on page 5 of the Sodus Bay topics thread. Very interesting and edifying.

Yo Guys & Gals,

I hope to see some of my friends out there today. Starting with breakfast at the Sportsman's Club and ending with me taking home the 1st prize for biggest perch of the day  . Hey ! A guy can dream eh?

On a serious note. The Sandy Creek Fire Department puts a lot of work in this Tournament as well as the members of the Sandy Pond Sportsman's Association. Let's show some support for the great guys and gals who put this Tournament on. Don't forget to buy a raffle ticket too. Some really great door prizes this year..

My son and I are double registered in both of the tournaments this week end. Looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends today. You got to know i will be singing a song or two. Let's have some fun and be safe out there.

What a great day as I got to meet up with some buddies of mine today and kraken beat me out of Third place for Sandy Creek Fire derby.Beware of Stanley Drive as it is terrible with slush and water , absolutely no wheelers as there is deep snow and slush. As always it was a pleasure running into Boggey and Stu what we need now is warm weather and then a deep freeze to tighten up the access at Stanley.the bite was slow today but did manage some nice perch to donate to Eddies Cove.

So overall how was the derby? I didn't get out but I did go down to the Wigwam to see how many people were out (or to see if anyone was fishing my favorite spot.... and they weren't!!!!). Looked like a lot of people clustered right straight out from the Wigwam and a lot of people out in front of Stanley. Any problems with garbage? Whenever there is a derby I always get a little worried that people won't respect our home waters. For the most part ice fishermen are great people but there are always a few that are subpar. Hope everyone had a good time and I'll be out in the am.

Post by: New Old Guy on Feb 11, 2018, 04:03 AM
Yo Jigger,

Yup, it was a rough day on the Pond. The over 1 foot of snow covering 3 to 4 inches of slush quickly turned the entire fishing area into a
slushy quagmire. After cutting your first hole the entire area around your hole became deluged with 3 to 4 inches of water on top of the ice. It paid to have a good pair of Mucks yesterday. I was fortunate to have my youngest son Matt as a fishing partner today.  Fortunate and grateful as he cut most of the holes, chased the tip downs and did I mention, dragged the Shappell tub out and back from the Wig-Wam. Now I'm not going to say old Boggey wouldn't have been able to do all that by himself, but I might have been a little late getting back to the weigh-ins. Horrible drag, but not as bad as some of the guys who were bogged down out in the middle of the pond on their 4 wheelers. Don't know how they got back in. Like Jigger said, with today's warmer weather and projected rain, it could be worse than yesterday so my fellow fishermen and fisherwomen , take heed.

I was delighted to fish next to my (friend of long standing) Tommy Boy. As Tommy Boy is not old , I felt it not appropriate to call him an (Old Friend). Tommy brought his wife and father-in-law to the tournament. Although Tommy Boy's father-in-law is an absolute rooky to ice fishing, he quickly caught on and out fished us all. Congratulations Tommy, I think we have a new convert eh?

Back to the Derbies, The Sandy Creek Fire Department did a phenomenal job on there one day tournament, the high lite again was the youth participation in the Derby. These kids are the future of our sport and I am glad to announce the state of our sport is alive and well. It was awesome to watch these young kids  pridefully walking up to the awards table to receive there trophies and recognition and to have their pictures taken. Even more telling was to watch the eyes and expressions of the parents who brought them. A proud moment for all who experienced it.

Further, I got to see some of my old friends from years past and I met a lot of new ones. I sat with Jigger and Mrs. Jigger at both Derby headquarters. I can see why Jigger is always such a positive and jovial guy. He, just as I, has married well. We are blessed men eh Jigger?
I was even lucky enough to win one of the raffle brown bag prizes, a nice little booty which more than paid for my son's registration and my own in prizes. There were more winners than, catching the 3 biggest fish in each class, or winning one of the big ticket items, or even winning one of the brown bag raffles. Getting together with and fishing with your friends and family members is part of what makes our sport so contagious, therefor we are all winners. Kudo's SCFD and SPSA, Great derby, great awards and rewards for all.

As I mentioned the SPFD derby was a blazing  success (please forgive the pun). A follow up trip over to Eddie's Cove Restaurant where a joyous crowd was gathered to celebrate the first days prize seekers. A good time was had by all. As did Jigger and many other local fishermen, I contributed a big bag of perch fillets for tonight's feast after the final weigh-ins. Louise said they had great numbers this year and I again look forward to seeing some of my old friends and making new ones at Eddies Cove restaurant this evening. Bring a good appetite.

Yo Kracken,

Congratz my friend. I'm sorry I missed you at the Sportsman's club. I sat with Jigger and his wife and he said you just left and I went home to pick up my wife to bring her to Eddie's Cove and again i was too late. Still, I had a great day on the ice Sunday. I again accessed from Wig-Wam. The ramp is still snow covered and no problems with access. I kept 30 nice perch. The pail sitter scenario was a little bit better than dragging all the equipment out and back, but 30 nice perch did make my pail a little heavier on the way back in. My right arm was 2 inches longer than the left arm by the time I got back in  ;D ;D.  While I had some nice perch, I couldn't crack the 11 inch mark all day. No pike hits. The rain they predicted never came, just a slight mist and some fog. It actually was a great day to be on the ice, minus the slush trudge. I saw a lot of sleds today and a few wheelers were still making there way out there with a few turning back when they hit the slush fields.  I didn't measure the ice but I will  tell you it took 35 cranks on my brand new nils to cut through it .

As Jigger said, wind her all up and let's go for it again next week end at Sportsman's Club 42nd annual Derby. Those guys and gals sure know how to do a fishing tournament. We should have another great day out on the ice next week. Yo Stelladog, I think the SCFD has a facebook account for the winners and pictures of the event. Not sure as I am not a big fan of facebook .

Yo Guys & Gals,

Just a quick note here. Check your 10 day weather forecast for the coming week if you are making plans to hit the ice. Today and tomorrow look to be outstanding, after that the weatherman says we are not only turning warm, but the warmth will be coupled with some rain on Thursday and Friday. The warm weather will extend on into the week end. While we have been blessed with some great ice so far this season, the advent of warmer conditions and the oncoming spring like conditions will warrant a good look see before entering your favorite honey hole in your next week's traveling plans. Some accesses will be better than others, obviously.

Remember, those creek flow areas are always the first to go.  The gas holes which seemingly disappear with all the snow cover are still there and will be more visible in the coming week . The thinner ice will go first so don't forget to bring your spuds with you that you left home for the last 2 weeks. This is the time of winter we all have to be aware.  Let's all stay safe and use good judgement. I want all my friends to be there next year so I can kibitz with them. In closing, I will again use the old admonition  ..... SPUD SPUD SPUD

I hope you all have a Happy Valentines day. I took the day off from ice fishing to spend with my Sweeta-Rita. Since I couldn't talk her into spending the day out on the  ice, we did the next best thing, dinner at Longhorn's, with desert . After 46 years of Valentines day with the same woman, I sorta  kinda think she is a keeper and the best thing that ever came into my life. After 5 children, 11 grand kids (with #12 on the way) and 2 great grand kids (with another on the way), I thank the Lord for trusting this kind woman into my life, our lives. She is the mainstay of our family, the rock, the ying to my yang, the flourishing well from which all good things have sprung fourth in our family.  So on this day I celebrate this kind and wonderful woman and hope she will continue to be My Valentine

As I'm trying to learn all I can about ice fishing, I've been inspired by many posts I've read since becoming a member of IceShanty...but no post has been as inspirational as this one. While it's easy to develop the mindset that fishing is life, the reality is, it isn't...what you described is "truly living". Thanks for your inspiring words and for the example you are to those of us who are younger than you and who are trying to do it right. Blessings to you and your wonderful wife! May you celebrate many more Valentine's Days together!

Always a pleasure.  As my girls have all finally grown out of the kids divisions, they still enjoy fishing with me now and then.  I was lucky enough to have my eldest daughter come home from college last weekend and fish with me and my father.  Of course my kid outfished us both.  Later my mom also stopped in for the awards and she to walked out with a door prize.    Hopefully the weather cooperates to allow being out this weekend safely.  Especially now that Tommyboy will now be able to joins us, that's good news Tom!!  (better than any news SU can give us) Sorry we didn't catch up last weeknd.
Hope to see you all this weekend!! Be safe!

Looking to bring a group of Cub Scouts up (many for their first outing) on Sunday. I know, I know...it's late. Broken thumb, busted open face and rollover accident in my car that included broken ribs have made a mess of my season. I am finally feeling a bit better so I am fulfilling my promise to the boys. The sportmans club is having a derby.

Any idea what won the derby? I don't have specifics on it, but I wondered how my 13'' lunker perch I pulled through the ice yesterday would have done. It's by far the biggest perch I've pulled out of Sandy Pond. High water in the spring definitely helped size this winter.

Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: New Old Guy on Feb 20, 2018, 10:18 PM
Yo  Burningdownthehouse,

Yes, that was is a very nice fish for the Pond as reeleyz  said. Nice and fat, like an Oneida perch. All in all  it has not been a bad year on the Pond, personally speaking. I did manage to get out on the ice today myself. Again, I accessed at the Wig-wam. The ramp was devoid of snow, so most were backing down the ramp to unload and load. I was a pail sitter for t6he day and I arrived late, about noon. Who to my surprise did I see entering the ice at the same time , my good fishing bud, TommyBoy. Totally unplanned  we dragged out together beyond the rock pile and both started hole hopping. It was a slow start and no hole was a bonanza but we stayed persistent and through the mist and rain we both managed to get soaked and even caught a few nice perch.

The ice was slick as jigger mentioned in his post from the previous day.  Those Katoola micro spikes were worth their weight in gold.. The holes were expanding with water running down them. Some were well over 16 inches in diameter and growing . You have to be a bit wary and watch your step out there . TommyBoy followed my foot tracks out for the most part as I was exploring the conditions with my familiar step step clunk of the spud. A lot of standing water. We came across a couple of holes a cow could fall through, so I can't stress enough this is the time of year extra caution is advised. The ice, while I did not get down and measure it was a good 10 inches with a thin layer of white deteriorating ice over the top. There are increasingly more dark ice areas viable than previous and again a warning, one can't easily differentiate these dark ice spots from a hole in the water. As most often, fishermen from the previous day or two will cut holes in pairs or sets of three, you have to be cognizant of your foot position at all times . The hole you are fishing has a partner or two and it is easy to step into the adjacent hole and get a wet foot or worse hurt oneself .

In closing, fearing this to be my last day as the warmer weather is fastly eating away at our hard earned ice, I braved the rain and the elements to get out there "one last time". This may not be that last time , but it is getting ever closer. Tomorrows temperature predictions are for 60 degrees plus and I can assure you we will lose more ice before the night time temperatures can do any healing at all. To one and all, please, please be careful out there. My usual admonition, these conditions i have sited were my own personally witnessed experiences. They only apply to the area and access i traveled on the Pond today Tuesday  the 20th of February 2018. These same conditions may be seriously compromised at other areas of the Pond and in the days to come.  My post is not intended to encourage or discourage entry at the Pond. All safety considerations should be made prior and during entry. Please use good common sence and most importantly SPUD SPUD SPUD

 Boggey

Post Script: I know I put 28 nice perch in my pail. 2 were 12 inches or over. I can't lie for Tommyboy, but I saw him putting a lot of 6 inchers in his pail    Just saying.

Hey Old Guy, nice to see you are able to get back out. I hope the wife is doing well. Were those 6 inchers in Tom's bucket his or did you "mistakenly" throw them in there?  I was lucky enough to run into Tommy both Saturday and Sunday.  My clan had a good day both days as well, good ice and weather. Sunday, I was graced with the presence of my wife and my youngest daughter, 15, along with a few other family members.  After having her pole in the water for approx 30 seconds and landing a nice 11+ incher, my daughter says, "Ok, I'm done, I can't beat that one, can I ride the snowmobile now dad"? Gotta lover her!! Off she went.  At least she was out there with us and not on her phone.    Little did I know until we were starting to pack up, Tommyboy  had been approx 150yds away from me all day.  Hoping that wasn't my last outing for the hardwater. Be safe

It came in handy as we have had a house full of guests since getting out of the hospital. Our great friends and family have luckily kept us in vitals for the last week. Only now am I starting to cook meals again. All prayers and best wishes are gratefully received . Thanks to all.  We are praying for a steady recovery and plan on getting her in the boat if not on the ice this year.

Tomorrow will be my first day on Sandy pond any tips for a newbie like me

stay away from big holes, there were quite a few large holes out there the other day, some big enough for a human to fall in.  get a spud, stop at woodies bait store they have them for sale, big bar, with a chisel on the end, and make sure the ice is thick enough to walk on. You may want to access from the elms golf course on rt. 3, or the wigwam, at the south end of the pond, each is 5 dollar parkling fee.  there is a state launch on rt. 3 on Stanley drive, but a creek runs into the pond right there, and as much melt as we have gotten it may not be to stable. Just my opinion....

yeah there is a whole thread about trash in the forums somewhere.  take an extra garbage bag with you when you go out and pick up what you can.  Unfortunately there is no cure for scumbags at the moment... on another note, how did you do? how was the ice holding up??

Weather forcast not looking very good for next week either. A couple of days in the 50's plus rain. Grand kids and I watched the ice dissapear on Skinner Creek Tuesday morning. Might be time to get the boat ready.

Nice day. I will admit the pucker factor for me was a bit high. Might need a couple extra beers to calm me down.  ;) That being said got 37 really nice perch. Heard some guys to the North of me having a Real Good time. My farewell tour to The Pond. Late start ,my bad  :(. Ice thickness was great i had 8-10" just the walk that scared the S--- out of me. Nice day Im glad I went.

Me and my wife went out today, ma6be 3 hours,  came out wit( 25. Lost a brand new jig rod and reel combo wasn’t paying attention looked over and my dangler stand was flipped over and the rod gone!  It was a little sketchy, found a couple gas hole thin ice spots, but most of it was nice thick black ice. Definately would not suggest venturing out in the dark.  Most of the ones I caught wer ten inches, sifted through a ton of dinks got 3 or 4 12 or better.  Went through a ton of Minnows, if it’s not raining too hard maybe I will hit it again tomorrow

Yo Tom,

Let's find out bud. I will get the Otter "STEALTH" out and we can park right over the top of the Homey hole when the ice clears out.

In fact TommyBoy, I am getting ready for my annual trip up to Kring's Point . Just waiting for "ice out" reports. I guess it's time to switch my efforts to the MyFishFinder site.

Ijustneed to check my lights on my boat trailer, I installed another chair up front, so we can take that instead, more room, and it has a motor.....
