Need to end an argument
« on: Mar 26, 2015, 01:51 PM »
I know two guys that are going at it tooth and nail concerning a rod and reel for ice fishing panfish.

Cabelas has a "mr. crappie wally marshal signature series crappie reel" (bait caster - not spinning reel) for sale.  One insists that it is not made for bluegill, crappie, perch on the ice and the other claims it is a great set up for ice fishing panfish.  Of course, both cannot agree on a matching rod.

Anybody out there have an opinion on this reel for ice fishing?  what rod would you recommend to match this reel?   Lets end this bickering on the ice.

I would just go buy what YOU like and forget what your buddy is telling you . It's your money and your going to be using it so who cares what he thinks . That being said there are a lot of great rods out there have fun shopping .

Everyone likes something different. This argument is slightly akin to fighting over if blondes or brunettes are better. They both do the trick for me.

agreed, considering you can use your hands as a reel in ice fishing (hand over hand) anything can be used to get a fish out of the hole.  It all comes down to preference.

I picked up one of the Mr. Crappie reels at Wally world a few years ago. I figured it would be nice to add to the ice fishing arsenal. It was absolutely worthless. The gap in between the frame and spool was large enough to allow 4lb test to get in between and wind around the spindle shaft.

Heck, you could use a tin can with string wrapped around it to catch panfish!

I have a "Mr. Crappie" set up that I use for panfish loaded with ice braid.
I work just fine, and will also handle larger fish with a little finesse!

Mr. Crappie only works for crappie.
You have to go to northwest Saskatchewan to find a Mr. Bluegill - they offer several weight classes....you need one of those to catch bluegill.

why are you getting involved? let them settle it.
a reel is a device to store/dispense line and to reel said line in. all a matter of preference as to which you use for your type of fishing. if you want to use a tuna reel for gills, so be it. it will do the same thing as crappie reel.

The reels are Shimano Curado 50E (currently retail replacements are Chronarch 50E).  The rods are custom made 32" baitcaster handles from Thorne Bros.  One is MH...the other is H action from their walleye sweetheart blanks.  They are spooled with 6# test line.  One is Excalibur Silverthread, the other is Gamma ESP ice line.

I have an older one a Shimano Chronarch 50mg on a another Thorne Bros 32" panfish sweetheart blank.  Not pictured - cuz it has been my secret weapon for years.  ;) Now running 4# Gamma ESP ice line.

They are for jigging techniques.  In a way, these set up makes fish fighting way too easy.  I can also adjust depth very easy as well.  About the only set back is that you have to more than often hand line them, vs spinning reels.  However there's more control on them vs. spinning reels when I need to strip line into the ice hole due to light jigs used with weights of like 1/32nd to 1/64th oz.
