I fish for Bass all the time. Usually I am in 5-20ft of water. I Fish a couple feet of the bottom and usually run out of bait every day I fish.

Bass can be a lazy fish in the winter, especially the LM's.

As for SM's, rock piles, or rocky points are very productive. I usually look for 10-15' FOW around these types of areas. But I always try to vary depths, some 3-5', some 5-8', some 10+.  I always do good 1-3' off bottom.

I always try to set up over a weed bed for LM's. 3' of cabbage in 10' of water is GREAT. You can put the bait right over the weeds, and be sure one will be by soon.

One of the biggest tips is do your research during the summer months. Find the keys areas the fish will be.

Wow..If i had posted before this, it's exactly what i would have said. for smallies, bouncing bait off a rocky shoal is certain death in the right water.

are you sure?  Most of the new regs leave the majority of waters open to fishing catch and release all species between now and the 1st

hey, there is nothing wrong with catching bass early, at this time of year all i want is to get to yell FLAG!!!  Usually i go for pike and bass the first time out, and after that, it is strictly business.
"many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish that they are after"
