Title: Google Earth Bathymetric/Contour Maps
Post by: TooLucky406 on Dec 13, 2011, 02:46 PM
Just wanted to share some stuff that I was able to use that has really help me out.  I was able to get data from MT FWP Maps and GIS Resource website  and convert it to be compatible with Google Earth (GE).  For Ice Shanty(IS), I figure this particular KML file would be helpful.  The file contain bathymetric or lake contours for many of Montana's lakes.

Please see INSTALLATION PROCESS below for your mobile device and PC/laptop

***UPDATE 2/19/2017***
Bathymetries are now all mobile device freely. In doing so Region 4 bathymetries were smooth/generalize to reduce overall file size.

*** UPDATE 12/28/2015 ***
There are a few new lakes, mainly high mountain lakes added. Again no bathymetric for Region 6.

Bathymetric kml are separated by Montana FWP administrative regions . Please see below picture for reference.

DOWNLOAD HERE (Zipfile called MontanaBathymetry2015)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wzs0xwdso2q35sz/MT_Lake_Bathymetric_2017_IceShanty.zip?dl=0

*Due to this being a free file hosting service, it has a limit on how many downloads the files can have . If you are not able to download it, likely it has reach the maximum download and you will have to wait until next month* In some instances, try to remove all cache files on your internet browser and allow all cookies and popups to show up in your internet settings.

Please NOTE, that the best way to use these KML files is to look for contour "breaks," "points," "sunken islands," etc. per your fish species you are targeting to get the maximum use, rather then for depth navigation only. Some bathymetries are better then other. For the original dataset, head over to Montana FWP Maps and GIS Resource website.

You will need Google Earth software/app install. In some cases, additional app such as "KMLZ to Earth Explorer" will be needed for your mobile device. All apps and software are FREE.

INSTALLATION PROCESS is for PC/Laptop but similar to mobile device. Only difference is you will select the kml file first then request the kml to open in Google Earth for mobile device.

1)SCAN the zip file before opening it, to make sure no virus is attach to the zip.  I have already scan it with three different anti-virus software, but you can never be too safe.

2)Once unzipped/extracted, save it (somewhere you will remember)

3)Open Google Earth. Once GE is running, Go to File => Open=> Go to the location of the .kml files => SELECT ONE kml files at a time. Selecting all KML files will delay the opening of the the files and even crash Google Earth. => Either double click the KML or select the KML and then click OPEN.

4)There will be a delay while the .kml file open. Most of the time it will auto-zoom to the boundary of the FWP region in which the bathymetric lies.

5)Zoom in to your favorite lake to see if there is a bathymetric for that lake.  Again, this data came from MT FWP so whatever lake is on there, is the only data that they currently have.

** Add new feature to the kml, where you can click on the bathymetric line and it will pop-up the lake's name(some lakes might not have names) and depth(in feet).

Maps (These are some maps that I have already done, so you can have an idea of how to use the .kml file)

Sorry guys for the late reply, but all those that has PM me has either been sent the kml file or an email stating that I need an email from you in order to send you the file.  This is the only way thus far that I know how to send it to people.  As far as the data goes, I was very disappointed that the Helena change of lakes weren't include in the data, but can't complain too much when its "FREE" data/software!!!  Also, it looks as though the data is less appearant in Eastern Montana too.

*** FYI...because the zip file is 10MB, email might take awhile to get through the system too.  I will look into other alternatives, only had an hour to come up with all this!! ***

Kml sent. Also, just friendly reminder that I "NEED" an email to send it and not just a PM asking to send it.  Thanks!

FYI...Tricks and Tips:  If you have a handheld gps, you can mark the bathymetric in Google Earth(GE) and find the coordinates. Then put the coordinates into the handheld gps.

Ex: Nevada Lake/Reservoir

1) On the "Toolbar" in GE there is a Yellow Sticky Pin ("New Placemark"). Select it and you will be able to move the Yellow Sticky Pin, thus showing you your Lat/Long.

2)Zoom-in close to the bathymetric line and drag the sticky onto the line.  In the "New Placemarker Dialog Box" you will find the Lat/Long and other options; name, color, size, etc.

3) Write down the Lat/Long and give it a name...in this case it's 55ft.

4) Continue marking the bathymetric until satisfy along with writing down the Lat/Long coordinates
 (http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i334/TooLucky406/TmV2ZnRzLmpwZw.jpg)

Now you have GPS coordinates of the depths along with a hard copy map you can reference too.  *** I also like to put a grid of the  Lat/Long to go along with the map if appliable (You can find this in "VIEW => GRID")

*** If you made a mistake, via, name spell wrong, misplace marker, Resizing Text, JUST RIGHT-CLICK THE STICKY AND SELECT PROPERTIES, this will give you editing power again. ***

*I'm so hoping this all make sense and is helpful!!! LOL!!!"

Ok - This is awesome.  Thanks TooLucky406.

Now you can convert the .kml file in google earth to a .gdb file.  This will allow you to open it up in Garmin BaseCamp and view the contour lines of the lake directly on your GPS.

Here is how I did it.  I downloaded GPSBabel off the internet.  It's an easy to use program.  It asks for an input format (Google Maps XML) and an output (Garmin Mapsource - gbd).  Put it in the folder (file name) you want and click apply.

Now open BaseCamp and import that file.

Or......maybe -

Since I am on my computer at work and don't have one at home I can email the gbd file to TooLucky406 and he can send out both the kml and gbd files to people who want them.

I will email it to him, but since I am basically giving someone else more work to do without asking (sorry toolucky406) it will be at his discretion if he wants to do it.  Otherwise follow the above instruction.

Maybe I spoke to fast on how well the kml to gpd file conversion works.  On my BaseCamp I am only able to see the contours when I am using the MT_PLAT4GPS as my base map.  This is the one that shows land ownership.  Otherwise I can't get it to show up.  Maybe someone who is not a novice at this stuff can make it work better.

Love the ability to use the maps on Google Earth to add points in my gps.  On the other hand, I'm really sad there aren't maps for the Helena reservoirs.  I can't find a Hauser map for the life of me.  The whole unpack/upload process was a cinch.

@ iceflippin

Haven't had time to do the conversion from kml to gdb. But here's a link that might get you closer.  It's a lot of work (as you will see in the link), but very doable if you have the time.

Thank you,TooLucky406, I can not believe how many smaller lakes that are contoured and then some that you think should be are not. What a cool deal and easy to do even for an old man like me. Thanks again.

I own an older (couple years) Garmin Legend GPS Handheld Unit. I have the additional Mapsource software on my pc, US Inland Lakes V3, Topo US 2008, and US Topo 24k National Parks , East V2. The Mapsource software is compatible with Google Earth -an add-on basically. Allows me to switch between 3 maps while looking at a waterbody, and a simple right click and Google Earth Map comes up , with my waypoints, routes etc. on it. I then use Snag it , a video/image capture program to copy the image so I can print it out on my printer. I can also add waypoints to the google earth maps and then transfer them to my Garmin Handheld. Great for finding and marking submergent weedlines etc. In addition the Garmin US Inland Lakes map also has cribs marked as waypoints on the unit when the map is loaded. Use the "GOTO" screen and unit will point ya to the crib or weedline etc.

Thank you,TooLucky406, I can not believe how many smaller lakes that are contoured and then some that you think should be are not. What a cool deal and easy to do even for an old man like me. Thanks again.
Seems to be the case with most mapping software, why this one and not my fav? If the waterbody I am researching has no contour lines provided thru US Inland Lakes V3, I switch to one of the 2 topo maps and can get an idea of how fast shorelines drop by looking at the adjacent topography. Better than nuttin. ;D

I used GPSBabel (www.gpsbabel.org/) to convert from KML to gpd.  Its a program and you have to download it and run the .exe file.

Alternatively you can use GPS Visualizer (http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/gpsbabel/) which you don't have to download.

With either program you select you input format as "google earth (keyhole) markup language" and you output file as "garmin mapsource - gdb"

If this is the only file you ever want to convert, I would use the gpsvisualizer.

Then I import it into base camp.  - The elevations don't match exactly like the kml file but it should work.

Thanks for the info on the layering of ge maps.  I am from livingston and dont seem to find any lakes around my area with contours.  seems like most of them are in the western part of the state.  pretty cool though.  am surprised that some of the lakes that navionics has mapped are not mapped on this app.

HELLO fellow Ice Shanty....do i have something GOOD to share for you guys!! ;D FWP just updated thier bathymetric line for MT lakes...and from the quick glance of the data, it has the Helena chain of lakes, except Holter, and it looks really good! Also notice they have Big Horn lake too, but sorry no Fort Peck. Need some input from you guys. I've been trying to upload the kml on to my phone but so far not  working (HTC Thunderbolt). Thinking it's a size limitation, because I can get other kml to run. So if "ci2019" can share how he is doing it, would greatly appreciated. By the way, running the kml off free app called KMLZ to earth app. Any way, back to the,"needed" input by you IS folks, would it work for you guys if I broke up the bathymetric kml by FWP regions, thus making it smaller and compatible to smart phone, or west, central, east, etc. So let me know. I'll be working on this today and hopefully have it done before this coming weekend......also I DON'T take $$$$ donation, just secret spot waypoints and really good micro beer!!! All right folks, the UPDATED barometric lines for Montana is now up and running. You can find the link and LOTS of info on the ORIGINAL POST (page 1).  Due to additional lakes, it grew significantly, so I had to break it up by FWP regions(no barometric for Region 6). The zipfile contain all 6 kml. Please read the installation process, since it has now change a bit. Enjoy! ;D

What I did was downloaded your zip and extracted the KML.  Then I used ES File Explorer (free app) to navigate to where I extracted the KML file to.  I just tap on the KML file and it automagically opens it in the Earth app.  Don't know if the phone or OS makes a difference for sure but I'm running a Galaxy Nexus on the Jellybean 4.2 operating system.

I found a way to get this file into google maps so it can be used on a droid with GPS while mobile with no PC tether.  If there is an easier way to use this file with a GPS I'm all ears.  Anyhow, log into google and go to maps, create a new map and import the kml file.  Only trick is that the files has to be further broken up.  Can't be larger than 3mb.  How did you break the original file up ?  I'm interested in breaking it up into individual lakes and hoping that none are over 3 mb.  If so then they have to be broke down even farther.  Then create a map for each lake and just load that one when heading out to it.

@Stephen K, the original file is in shapefile format and can be found on the    MT FWP website. I used ArcMap, a GIS base software to break it up and converted. Thing is, you're not going to get any of the more popular lakes among the shanties here less then 3MB, unless you massaged the data, in which you will lose accuracy! You can probably get the small high mountain lakes to be less then 3MB, but no one ever fish them. I'm currently in the process of getting it to be Gamin compatible, but it's more work then the kml conversion. It'll be awhile before I'll get this done, just loaded with bunch of work right now, but I'll post it up once it's ready.

What file format do you need to put it in to get it in to Garmins? I write GIS software for a living so if you need an export selection from ArcMap as a button in ArcMap I can probably do that for you in C++ or C#. I would need to know the output format though and if they use a projection that is different then the original shape file I would need to know that too so I could do the transform on the way out. PM me if you want help with this.

And that is exactly what I was afraid would be the case !  Just being optimistic I guess.  And that garmin conversion is a WHOLE LOT of work...... if it were simple everyone would be doing it !

This is assuming you have the kml install on Google Earth. Once GE is up and running, zoom into the area/lake you want to print. Go to FILE => SAVE => SAVE IMAGE AS. Remember where you save the JPEG/JPG. Now go open the image(double click it).  If you are satisfy with the image, go ahead and print it.  Depending which program you have for default viewing of pictures, you'll find the printing options. Hope this help, if not PM me for additional questions. Thanks!

Another way to print a google Earth image is to select File then Print.  Then click the radio button that says "Screen shot of the current 3D view"

I just downloaded the files and when they overlay google earth, the whole map is covered with giant "X"s and the underlying map is severely faded out. I get the impression that google earth doesn't like using these files. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Title: Re: Google Earth Bathymetric/Contour Maps

Looks like FWP did another update to the Bathymetric data and at the same time removed some of the lakes/data due to ownership of the data, ex: Tongue River Res is now removed. I'll try to add some of the new lakes into the current data. As far as "MT-Ed" about the "giant X", I'll try to split some of the Region's lakes up into three parts(Region 3 & 5 are huge data sizes; causing crashes/errors) to something like Region3_1, Region3_2, Region3_3, etc. I'll update when I am finish, but it might be some time, since work is busy right now and Free Time is hard to come by, especially with the ice forming this week! Any questions, just PM me. Thanks!

***All data, download info on MT Bathyemtric can be found on the very FIRST post, for folks new to this***

It has 90% of the lakes covered. I know you can download the map sections for countours and such but can you still use gps and plot points without cell service? I guess I should have been more specific.

Yes you can use the GPS when out of service as it uses the phones GPS receiver to pinpoint your position.

ALRIGHT IceShanty members!!!! The NEW bathymetric .kml files are completed. There are several new lakes that are frequently fish here that now have the bathymetric lines, so kudos to FWP for working on this! You will find all the UPDATED info on the first post. The zipfile is large(122MB) so will take some time to download. There are a total of 9 .kml files(some not compatible for smartphone). If you have any question please PM me. Thanks.

I've used your maps quite a bit in the past, particularly for Tongue River Reservoir.  Am I understanding you right that I will lose TRR if I download the new Region 7 maps?

Thanks again for doing this.

No Tongue Res is still there. Due to copyright, by the surveyor and FWP,  it was removed from the  updated data. But being that Region 7 didn't change, I left the same .kml file in the zipfile. All the name are different so even if you unzip the NEW data there will be no overwrite/erase of the data. Confused you even more!  Lol!

@ TooLucky406

My hat is tipped to you sir as this is the most imformative post/topic I have seen regarding lake contours / depth / bathymetry etc...that I have ever seen on the 'Net.

MANY states that don't have maps available on their websites ALSO have "metadata" and GIS info available.

As an open-water fisherman I have always thought that a decent map of a lake / reservoir is the best place to start.

I can add more info concerning maps & such in a few days.

TooLucky,

First of all, thanks for putting these maps together way back when.  I have used them extensively and really appreciate your effort.  As for the updated files, I have a quick question.  Do you happen to know if the contours for the Causeway Arm have been added?  If so, I will download the new ones.  If not, what I have already will do.  Thanks again and good luck this year.

Although late in our ice season, "Bumping" this due to several recent request for the kml download. Also, I made all the kml files mobile device freely now. In do so, Region 4 bathymetries were smooth/generalize to reduce overall size. No major lake bathymetries were added by FWP in this dataset.
