Little Buddy? or Portable Buddy
« on: Dec 21, 2016, 08:24 PM »
Joe here, a little new to ice fishing. Still trying to get my gear together. What are some thoughts on the Mr. Heater series? I have a clam kenai pro thermal one man and was wondering which will be best suited.

Welcome to the site. Love my single buddy heater. Been beating the crap out of it for years and keeps going. Have a double too but ever since i got my insulated one man flipover i only need the single even on the coldest days. Save some money and bulk, get the single buddy youll be all set.

Is there like a general safety forum ? Like things to watch out for when on the ice?

I run a buddy in my 9x9 clam pop up . Works great. Good on fuel also. It's hard to burn up a  1lb tank in a day !

My little buddy is perfect for a one man shanty . Great for hole hopping to just set it next to you to warm your hand or deice your reel.

THE buddy heater is usually the best bet with the choice of 4000 or 8000 btu and able to use 1lb or the bigger cylinders 5 to 30 lb.

I've used both the buddy and little buddy heaters and for better words I was unimpressed with both heaters . I have a large ice shack and they don't put out enough heat. For a one man shack they might do well .

I use both the Little Buddy and Buddy heater in my one man flip over. I have the same Clam model as you. On most days the Little Buddy is fine if I am just staying in place and fishing one hole for a long time. It takes a little bit of time to heat the flip over up. But if you are constantly moving from hole to hole on a really cold day and need heat, the Buddy heater will heat up the flop over faster. The only other thing I hate about the little buddy is that I knock it over a lot and rarely knock over the Buddy heater. You a new to this now but if you wallet can afford the Buddy heater, go with that one. Once you start being more mobile, you will wish you had the bigger heater on those sub-zero days.

I have a little buddy and would not buy another gives off a lot of heat when it works. When it wont lite a good bang on the ice will usually get it going. I've taken it apart many times still cant figure out what is wrong with it. Might have something to do with tilt switch.

If you buy the Stryker Ice suit you wont need a heater and you'll float when you unexpectedly go swimming.  :-\

Either way, my favorite purchase was the adapter to run the bigger tanks.... way cheaper than burning through smaller tanks all weekend

My buddy heater fell off the back of my atv this hunting season into a huge puddle . The almost empty tank was floating it. No damage other the the neck of the tank got bent on impact. Still works great !

I've been using the little buddy for 3 years now and it's perfect for a one man shanty.. I can't imagine needing a bigger one unless you're a sissy that needs the shanty to be 80 degrees. I typically only run the little buddy for about a 1/2 hour at a time and it gets it toasty in there

The buddy heater has a pilot light so you don't need to keep lighting it every time you want it on , I'm not sure if the little buddy has that or not . When that thing is on high it will cook you out, I normally keep it on low -med and my pop up (9x9) will stay in the mid 60s ,
