Ice Thickness
« on: Dec 20, 2010, 07:18 AM »
Moreau Lake State park is out of control. I had my father in law call to get an update yesterday.  They have close to 8 inch's and wont let any one on the ice. So much much for early ice rainbows... :-\ Can someone tell me what gives them the right to keep outdoorsman off the ice when it very clear the ice is ready.  The actually told me they were going to wait until they have between 8-12 inch's of ice.  I'm attaching the ice thickness guidelines from the DEC website?

Ice Thickness Permissible Load
2 inches one person on foot
3 inches group in single file
7.5 inches one car (2 tons)
8 inches light truck (2.5 tons)
10 inches truck (3.5 tons)
12 inches heavy truck (7-8 tons)
15 inches 10 tons
20 inches 25 tons

As of right now, the ice is thick enough to hold a one ton car...per the DEC guidelines. Why is this one State Park marching to the beat of their own drum? Did someone drown or go through the ice in the recent past? ???

Only reason that comes to mind is the one that fits a lot of things the state does.
CAUSE THEY CAN!

There are problems down there every year. The park cops are like mall cops. They think they own it and are way out of control. There is no reason for them to be there right now because the campground is closed. None of the other campgrounds keep staff all winter.

Well put. Why does the State ...which is in such financial dire straits :%$#!:...pay to have people sitting a park office doing nothing except answering phones.... to tell me I cant go on the lake :%$#!:  What a waste of my f'n tax dollars.  The only valueable service provided by these folks during the winter season is snow plowing. They should contract out  the snow plowing and fire these lazy, non value adding, bureaucratic blood sucking state workers.  This is a fine example of government gone over the top. It so frustrating to have the DEC say one thing and this park doing their own thing....because they can. Its BS :%$#!:

It's the DEC of New York State...the people that sit in Albany and make these decisions that affect all of our state's sportsman probably have never set foot in the outdoors.  What right do they have to tell people they cant fish a public body of water.  Apparently our licesces (that are dramatically overpriced) go to paying for these people in this office.  Sorry to rant but I think that we are getting pushed around by the DEC too much and it takes all of us as a whole to voice our problems to our legislators or nothing will ever get done...it will only get worse.  Just my thoughts.

I called my state senator Roy McDonald"s office today. Here are his numbers:
518 455 2381 Albany office
518 274 4616 troy office

Let him know we don't like being pushed around!

I'd go out there and make them drag me off the ice, thus proving the ice was safe and making them look like jacka$$es. Make sure to call the local news ahead of time or have someone video it to make a big show.

They didn't drag me off the ice, but they did ticket me... That was about 2-3 yrs ago (got it dismissed). I think jflood was part of that group as well. The sad part is they could have said the ice isn't safe please leave BUT NO they handed out tickets NOT please leave F'in tickets..

The DEC has nothing to do with the NY Parks and Rec Facilities.  They are two totally different agencies with two totally different police agencies.

Same thing, I misread the post, sorry.  Park police is no different though, they like to give people a hard time around here.  Its not like we are breaking any major laws or harrasing anybody. I am sure that there is something else out there that someone is doing that should require a bit more attention that someone going out on the ice.

the state parks dept. can make regulations as they see fit. they have less staff to patrol in winter, so they set guidelines to make it safer for YOU. they may not be able to respond quick enough. we had the park open 2 days down here, and they closed it when the saw open water, even with 9-12 inches of ice. they regulate Harriman and Sterling Forest state parks like this every year, and have for about 30 years or more.

That seems totally crazy to keep people off the ice at this point with 8". However, you guys have to understand the officers you guys are dealing with are taking orders from someone. They may not agree with it either, but they sure as h**k arent going to tell you that. They are doing their job. Unfortunately, we have to obey (maybe not agree) with what they are doing. The best way to do it is to voice your opinion as some have already done.
I've had many run-ins with both Park Police and DEC Officers. Some are really cool and would chat all day with you. Others checked my license and didnt say much and almost seemed negative toward me before going on their way like they were upset I had everythign in order. All i could do was smile, but we cant expect them to be a cheery bunch every encounter. No one is that happy all the time, except for maybe Oletimer ;).

the park police here don't check for fishing licenses, bait receipt, too many fish, short fish, etc... they will ticket you for being on a closed lake, but otherwise, they just write traffic tickets here.

Yeah......you just have to love that along with the limited access to get on early it is the same for night fishing as the bullhead fishing over by the bridge is second to none!  Long walk back to the car if you are not staying in the park that night.

I caught my limit of trout in 30 minutes a number of years ago and were finishing off my buddies when the park police gave us crap for keeping our limit ::)

I stopped fishing it years ago :(

i ws there 3 days ago.  I was running in the park in the morning and saw LOTS of folks on the ice - at least 4 different parties out there.  Not sure of any more details, but for sure they were fishing it.  Call again or stop by.  I was thinking about going tomorrow, but now maybe i'll do a morning run first and chat with the folks there before heading out with my gear.   I'll report what i hear.  In the meantime, on the assumption that i CAN fish...can anyone give me tips on bait/locations?  I've nbever caught anything there on the ice, but have had lots of luck fishing it in the summer.

Thanks all,
Rob

So i did my morning run at Moreau - it was beautiful as always.  But i noticed open water near the beach with a bunch of geese floating around.  It was obvious most of the lake is solid and there were lots of people/dog/deer tracks on the ice.  However, i spoke to the guy at the booth and he said they can't open the lake to fisherman until it is locked up and at least 4" in all spots.  Bummer, my ice fishing plans for the day are over.

Nice run though!  I'll continue to monitor duning the week and post any changes.
