What species of fish gives you fits through the Ice
« on: Oct 31, 2009, 04:25 PM »
I have been ice fishing for around 6 years or so and i have caught  many species of fish but the one the eludes me year after year is the walleye. That said i have fished a few places that had walleye ... honeoye ,oneida sodus bay, cauta lake.... but i have still yet to catch one. I understand they are more active at night  but little more than that i don't know . I am at a loss on this one .Any help. Where is the best place to get my chance .... not looking for a hot spot  gps info.... and whats the preferred techniques and baits ?
Where is the ice !!!!

The last hour of light is when most are caught. Go pretty small with the minnow size on tip-ups, perch bait works for walleyes. As was mentioned, get away from the noise-making idiots, and have your holes drilled and all your setting up done before that last hour of the day.

If your fishing with tipups, switch to a mono leader and maybe a #7 or 8 treble hook.  I usually put my baits 1 ft off bottom, much closer to bottom then if I'm fishing pike.  This is in a place where there are almost no weeds, so you might want to go higher off bottom if the bottom is weedy.

Unless there's a really hot bite or bad ice, I stay away from people, Machines, and Power augers!   Last year  A big group(20+) of noisy guys stole my holes from the day before, so I set up about 150 yards from them, the more noise they made, the more I caught!  ;D The next day they set up on those holes and I went to the ones they were on the day before and pounded them again! It was funny!   :woot:

I get some walleye CRAZY shallow at night where I ice fish...

Literally 1-3 feet of water, typically within about 10ft of the shoreline.  It may seem absurd, but that's where I tend to find the most of them after dark.

Interestingly, if you are fishing a lake that also holds Brown Trout, you can catch trout in the same holes (wicked close to shore) during the daytime...

Shallow water is always worth a hole or two in my layout!!!

I  don't know if you fish for Pike or not but if you are using big bait try going with a little smaller bait. Also if I'm fishing water with Walleye in it I always get there  an hour and a half earlier to set up and give me an hour for that early morning bite. Tho I must say I have gotten a good share of Walleye in the daytime.  Hope any of us can help. Give us a ereply back and let us know how you do. Good luck.....FISH ON !!!!!!!!!

When I'm fishing for Walleye I'm in 10-20 fow off some kind of structure. They are always glued a 1-1/2' off the bottom and early to mid morning has always been the most productive. I use medium shiners on #6 circle hooks with a 4' 10lb fluro leader..

I just want to say this, I've sat out on a lake from dusk until 4am enough times to come to the conclusion it ain't worth it. A dozen times or so over the years i sat out there all night and the ONLY time it was productive was during a well lit moon. Skunked the rest. I think they bite hot at night during open water and do a 360 once the lakes ice over.

same here with the walleye, i can find little guys off and on, but have a hard time locking into a consistant bite and bringing in the larger fish.

The monster perch of Keuka can give me serious fits. 1 in 5 trips are successful for me. I'm not talking about the 10" ers...I'm talking bigguns ;D.

honeoye lake gives me fits. the big gills and walleyes seem to elude me.  never had much luck there.  rgfixit said it right, perch on keuka are PICKY.  you can mark them on the flasher and sight fish them and seems like they have lockjaw most times.

I agree Walleye give me a fit but this year will be the one on Honeoye. That lake seems to put up plenty of bass through the ice though. Mabey we whae to catch more bass to get to those eyes.

Walleye for me, but I haven't targeted them that much.  This year I'm planning on targeting the crappie first, then walleye depending on which lakes/areas freeze first/thaw last.

Trout, any kind, any size.

Lakers, Rainbows, Browns, doesn't matter. Can't seem to catch them through the ice.

rainbows, even big ones, are pretty common to get thru the ice here, if your in em....big arctic char and dollies arent to hard either, but big lakers for my buddies and i just dont seem to happen. maybe i can fix that this year...the biggest laker ANY of us has landed, let alone hooked, i picked up trolling on a lake. it was 8lbs. however i really feel the need to break the 10 lb mark.
