I ordered mine through sportsmans guide. I believe they are around 5 bucks each. I have never seen them local.

How good do these work? I've considered buying some, but didn't know if their were worth the investment or hassle of carry extra equipment.

Also, anyone tried making some? and are they better / cheaper then ones you buy?

If It is cold and blowing snow, they are worth it. I have been out on -15 days and never had my holes freeze. When other guys are constantly fussing with there tilts, I just pick them up and check them. No chopping ice. You do need to make sure the cover is flat against the ice otherwises it won't work 100%. The real advantage is in shallow water. You can check a flag without having to chop ice and potentially scare the fish into dropping your bait. Just my thoughts but I have been using the same set for atleast 5 years now with no complaints.

I just fill in my holes with snow after i set my trap up. The snow keeps the holes from freezing any more than  a 1/2 inch.

another cheap and easy trick is to paint a couple ping pong balls black and toss three or four into your hole. tehy absorb enough heat to keep your hole from freezing. Try it.

Only works during the day though!
