A-TOM-MIK Season in close (Pic Heavy) Oneida Lake
« on: Mar 18, 2014, 02:31 PM »
Far from over as of 3-18-14 if your an Upstate New Yorker (with 20+ inches of ice on every inch of Oneida Lake) but for me only the odd trip left as duties are piling up. It may have been my best ice-fishing season ever as far as quality with limits of gills starting the season and limits of sunny's ending it, some of which were pushing the 10 inch mark and weighing in at 28-32 lbs. for a NY 50 fish limit. In the height of my season there were limits of Yellow Perch ranging from 30 - 38 lbs. for 50 fish and pushing the 14 inch mark. As a numbers guru what a season it was and as I age myself I have  a couple mentors to thank for my ability to catch these fish even during tough times. As with everything in life, soaking in what you learn from others is all part of cutting into the curve. For those who will push on in 2014 please travel safe, I've lost close friends and mentors to the ice, it leaves scars as you carry on without them.

Till next season all, I love this site and was happy I had the chance to share my season with many of you through images and posts.

Many days I hadn't caught much til noon, then found em when most all others had left of gave up, or got a late start but still went and stuck it out. Weather was a huge factor this year but we pushed through it, massive rains, snow measured in feet and slushy times fishing in water up to our ankles. Wind storms that would blow my shack away if I got up even for a second, and temps below freezing often (which isn't normal for my area) but again persevered. Dealt with a lot of miserably moody fish but stuck with it and threw it all at them. Again I thank my mentors who brought me along through the years and taught me to hang in there, they can turn on at anytime and are always biting somewhere. Luckily enough I have the dream job of a lifetime to be able to do all the above.
