What is the best locator to be able to shoot though the ice? I currently have a Marcum (cant remember the model) I have never been able to shoot through the ice. What if any are the tricks to it?

You need some water/liquid on the ice for the transducer to shoot through. If there is a bunch of snow and surface is pocked it's difficult but if smooth it works well.

Just used the boat transducer off my hummingbird portable and just put a little water on the ice and it worked great even through some white ice was pretty impressed since I have never tried it before.

I've used the MarCum LX-i Digital Handheld Sonar for a number of years for checking depths and it has worked very good. As others have said, cloudy ice makes it much more difficult to shoot through the ice and a small amount of water on the surface of the ice is necessary. I carry a plastic "squirt-type" bottle with me to put a small amount of water on the ice.

My hummingbird helix 5, with portable kit, has been doing extremely well shooting though even pretty cloudy ice, as long as there is a little water on top.

Could dump the whole pot down the hole and it wouldn't bother me one bit.

I use a small dish soap bottle and fill it with hot water before I leave the house and put it in my tackle/everything box and it keeps everything warm and works for the depth finder.  I use the Vexilar LPS1, it's a little older but works but not through the dirty or slushy ice.

;D 2qt Stanley full of hot water and my LX-I has saved me a lot of drilling over the years. Wouldn't call it a "fishfinder" though.  ;D
