I use paraffin. its used in canning. can get at Walmart, or grocery store. wont freeze if left in truck. I rub it on before I take sled on ice. works great.
Rub it on your Crossbar "pins" too.  Makes removal a lot smoother.

I am just about finished with my first smitty sled. I am quite proud of the results, so far, of my $38.72 investment. WooHoo!

I'd recommend you turn the eyebolts in the ski tips around or leave them off and run your rope thru the holes from the front and a washer then knot it.

Does anyone have some pics (and advice) on how to mount the skiis to the uprights?
I'm ready to start assembling my first smitty and don't want to wreck the skiis.

Thanks! Leave it to me to over engineer the process. I started drilling and countersinking holes.
Had a 4" lag screw in my hand ready to crank a ratchet.
Glad I asked first (he says embarrassed).
I'll be filling those craters and going the deck screw route.
Thanks again for the info.

I am planning to try a couple of variations for the line pull attachments, but I was considering the method you suggested. Thanks sizematters

In addition, I used 3.5 inch deck screws to attach my skis to the risers as well .... worked great!

You guys talked me into it!  Built it Sat. morning, took it to the lake, nothing but clear ice, so I left it in the truck.  Only thing left is to drill the ski tip holes and wax it.  Worked well in 8 inches in the yard tho!  2x10 for the uprights.

Years ago, I bought a pair of Iverson Snowshoes to use for deep snow on the ice.  We didn't have any appreciable snow for the next two winters.  I have thought about buying a snowmobile, but that might cause us to have Florida weather for years in the future, don't want that on my conscience!!!  ;)
